🪐 First direct #imaging of a forming #exoplanet carving multiple rings in its accretion disk! Van Capelleveen et al. (2025) reveal a ~5 MJup #protoplanet 57 AU (~8.5 billion km, farther than Pluto) from its star (#WISPIT2, ~133 pc) with #VLT/SPHERE, showing #Keplerian motion and Hα #accretion. A rare, striking view of planet–disk interaction in real time 💫

Figure 1. Shown here is a SPHERE/IRDIS multiband image of the WISPIT 2 system. The H-band Qϕ image was added as the blue channel and the median combination of H-band and Ks-band Qϕ images was added as the green channel. The red channel is a combination of a Ks-band Qϕ image and a Ks-band cADI image in which we masked all but the gap containing the thermal emission from WISPIT 2b.

The plot in question:

It's a figure I made for my #thesis that shows the #relativistic emissivity pattern of an #accretion disc illumed by an off-axis hot X-ray corona around a spinning #blackhole

The radial axis is logarithmic (up to 100 rg). The corona is located at 10 rg on the right. Labels are logarithms of emissivity.

The curvature of spacetime is lensing the photons from the corona onto the innermost regions, and causes the spiral-like deformation from the frame-dragging effect.

A polar countour plot. It is supposed to represent the face of an accretion disc in the equatorial plane around a spinning black hole. The details of the simulation are in the post. The figure shows initially concentric circles at the outer edge that become warped and pulled along with the spin of the black hole as they move inwards. There is a small maxima under the point where the corona is located. The logarithm of emissivity increases as you move further into the black hole, indicating that the most illuminated regions are the innermost.

ALMA captured, for the first time, the accretion flow _towards_ a supermassive black hole. Identifying this flow had long been a challenge, due to the small scale of these regions and the complex gas motion near galactic centers. They saw where the foreground molecular gas absorbed the bright light coming from the Active Galaxy Nucleus, and evidence of its movement.

An artist impression of the distribution of interstellar medium in the active galactic nucleus based on the results of this observation. High-density molecular gas flows from the galaxy towards the black hole along the plane of the disk. The material accumulated around the black hole generates a tremendous amount of energy, causing the molecular gas to be destroyed and transformed into atomic and plasma phases. Most of these multiphase gases are expelled away via outflows from the nucleus (including plasma outflows primarily occurring in the direction above the disk and atomic or molecular outflows mainly occurring diagonally). Still, most of these outflows will fall back to the disk, acting like a gas fountain. Credit: ALMA (ESO/NAOJ/NRAO), T. Izumi et al.

This much #rain falling on the region’s fresh snowpack will lead to a threat for localized #flooding across the South Coast, especially in areas where storm drains remain clogged by snow & ice from last week’s #wintry #weather .
#Environment & #ClimateChange Canada ( #ECCC ) issued #FreezingRain #warnings for parts of the #FraserValley into early Monday as #threat for continued #ice #accretion will lead to #hazardous #travel & risk for tree damage and #PowerOutages.
