It's another beautiful day to stop using Photoshop, as Adobe continue being utter bastards!

There's so very many alternatives but after 25 years of using PS I didn't like any of them enough, I just wanted to edit my photos and scanned paintings, not learn a new system... And I've been very happy with Affinity! I kept meaning to watch even one tutorial but never did. 😄 It just worked intuitively enough, and with but one two digit purchase of the program forever.
The RAW editing is also nice enough that now I only use one program instead of another one for that.

Today's practice stack-- Apophyllite crystal cluster

Poona, India, purchased early 1990s

A crystal cluster of slightly brighter clarity but somewhat similar in "look" to Rock Quartz crystal is posed on deep blue velveteen. If you look closely, you can find tiny rainbows trapped in the crystals. This is Apophyllite, a relatively unknown crystal popularized in the New Age as a calming and meditation stone. Poona, India. Photo by Peachfront of my own specimen.

A random focus stack i did yesterday, i've only done a few focus stacks (mostly astro focus stacks of Comet Atlas) so i need to practice to make sure i know all the steps before my next workshop...

there were 11 photos in this stack, and i think it still has issues, but sooner or later i've got to figure out how to photograph rocks since i have a huge collection 🤣

A macro photo of some details of a rock crystal cluster with several visible sharp crystal points, the one in the center has a tiny rainbow in it if you squint. The background is dark blue velveteen. This is one of many I collected in the Hot Springs area of Arkansas in the early 1990s. Photo by Peachfront.

Those of you familiar with Affinity, any ideas of when the use to have campaigns with discounts? I know they had Black Friday but was not interested then, but I am now :)

sometimes what i see in my mind and what comes out when i practice a simple sky replacement exercise is not... really the same

but this Goldfinch keeps moving forward anyway so there's that...

A photo of a finch with some yellow on borb's face and noticeable black wings with white bars. This is a winter American Goldfinch. Behind is a blue sky with fluffy clouds that, as an exercise, I tried to put in place of today's utterly pale steel gray sky. Not the greatest or most natural looking result but call it practice!!! my first beta test of Affinity Photo 2.6 object selection

Boobear the 28-year-old cockatiel is helping me by posing on a white/messy background, i think that's a tough enough test

snap the photo, select the bird, select the not bird, apply gaussian blur & desaturate to the not bird channel

had to do a little tinkering because object selection missed part of the crest but it's... semi-OK?

comments welcome

Here's a challenge for you

Oilbirds in a deep dark steep-walled canyon visible from a road with no shoulder, just some rebar to block you from falling off while the local traffic blows by (mostly commercial trucks)

shot down & through the opening of the barrier at extremely high ISO (camera struggling to find subjects & focus)

processed to reveal the Oilbirds but not entirely happy with it... suggestions welcome

A photograph of brown birds sitting on brown rocks down a deep cliffy-type canyon. The photo has been processed to put more light on the scene than actually existed. The birds are sleeping or snuggling or preening, with a bird on the center right showing best as it cranes back its head & lifts its tail to preen its lower back. Photo by Peachfront. November 2024. Throwback to March

Whew... I edited the edit... I try to practice a little photo-editing every day but this one was tough because a cooperative and beautiful subject was posing for me pretty much under a dark tree with lots of branchy stuff in there...

A photograph of a long blue bird with a long tail on a bare branch. This is the Abyssinian Roller. Photo was taken at sunset in shade because that's where the bird approached me, so it's a little noisy... Photo by Peachfront. March 2024. Senegal.

After hours of staking out the river over quite a few days, Mr Kingfisher finally decided to pose.

A male Eurasian Kingfisher perched on a curved branch looking down towards the bottom right of frame, the background is completely blurred making the magnificent orange and electric blue plumage very noticeable. Well, I feared they‘d switch to some vile subscription model after the acquisition, but this is an update I can get behind.

https://80.lv/articles/add-qr-codes-to-images-with-the-latest-affinity-photo-update/

Still, if they wanted to truly impress me, they‘d make a Linux port. Now that would be revolutionary.

But we probably get a fucking subscription model after all before that happens.
:neofox_drowsy: This is also a sign of the time: Taking every positive update as the calm before the storm until the inevitable enshittifaction happens.

Here’s to hoping they remain being the exception.

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is "Planet vs Plastics" , took this image recently on the banks of The White Cart River. The planet is losing with some irony it would seem.

Among natural detritus snagged on the bank of a river the lid of a litter bin made of plastic is visible on the rhs of the frame, it's a blue colour and has a keep tidy logo with a figure dropping litter in a bin is on the side of it. Visually it is a serious of layers with branches curving over the shot, a reflection is just visible of the bin on the surface of the river.

VR not working on my big lens. Don't want to be without it as repair would take at least six weeks. As I had to wait 5 months last year while they tried to procure parts, the prospect of a repeat means I'm holding off. Fast shutter speeds and tripod/gimbal is the solution for now. Blow me down if I didn't get this shot which I've only been trying to get for five freaking years.

A blue tit with wings spread to full extent just taking off from a teasel stalk, on foot still making contact with stalk but only just. Blue Tits are small birds similar to chickadees in the Americas. The have blue and white heads with a black eye strip, shoulders are same azure blue as head parts, as is the tail. In this image the bird is backlit so there is a bright outline around it. You can just see the yellow breast as the bird is angled downwards as it prepares to swoop down to a point towards the lower left hand side. The background is smooth and dark with hints of brown from out of focus beech leaves.

A photo of a woman and her horse. She wears a deep red dress covered with embroidered red floral patterns, and a fur shoulder drape with black-tipped grey fur. Her horse stands behind her, with his neck bent around her shoulder and head in front of her on one side. One of her hands is on his nose, and the other on his neck just behind the jaw. The horse has red flowers adorning his headband and chest strap.

Eurasian Nuthatch photographed on Friday in a moment of good light.

Imagine a streamlined bird, about the size of a tennis ball, with a slate blue back and a rusty orange chest. It's perched acrobatically on a slender tree trunk, its powerful claws digging into the rough bark. The trunk itself feels cool and is largely devoid of moss.

This curious nuthatch is facing left, its head tilted inquisitively. Its sharp black beak peeks out, ready to crack open a hidden seed tucked within a crevice. Sunlight bathes the scene from the right, casting warm shadows across the bird's fluffy belly and highlighting the delicate details of its feathers. You might even imagine a glint of sunlight catching its bright black eye, sparkling with intelligence.

The nuthatch's body presses close to the trunk. You can almost feel the firm grip of its feet, anchoring it securely against gravity. The air is still, broken only by the occasional chirp or twitter from other nearby birds. Perhaps you can even imagine the faint rustle of leaves whispering secrets in the gentle breeze.

This little nuthatch, clinging to its tree trunk canvas, paints a picture of determination, curiosity, and perfect adaptation to its woodland world. It's a snapshot of nature's intricate beauty, waiting to be explored with your imagination. This prose was largely generated by Gemini LLM with inaccuracies edited out.

Common Buzzard from earlier on today, nice banking turn after avoiding some crows.

Image is a 2:5 ratio (portrait orientation) shot with the buzzards wings running from top left down to bottom right, the wing tip feathers are splayed out, the tail skewed to achieve the turn. The birds eyes are looking ahead; there is an impression of seriousness, this bird is hungry.
