I wonder if it makes sense to approach job search through hobbies and side activities rather than just by past employment history.

In my free time, I do #microbiology. I have a #biolab in the cellar with petri dishes and microscopes and all. I ferment #olives which grow in my tree and make pickles out of them, I make two kinds of #sourdough bread from a culture I extracted from quince fruit peels from my own tree, one wheat and one #rye.

I do #mycology. I have some 2,000 photos of wild #mushrooms in my Facebook photo albums.

I do a lot of software-defined radio, I have more #antennas than I care to count, and also more #SDR modules than I care to count. I stream radio data directly to my own #ElasticSearch which I can visualize in different ways in Kibana.

I do home automation, and the house has countless sensors and cameras. I use #HomeAssistant for this, with lots of modules I have implemented myself, for example for scraping data from my Huawei solar panels and graphing their historical data.

I have a home #Kubernetes cluster with many nodes and several public-facing services with some 99.9% uptime like a local Mastodon instance and also a #Matrix instance, in addition to lots of local services.

I am a data archivist and I have lots of stuff backed up locally if the internet goes down like it did during the notorious #apagon in Spain.

I play strategy games in Playstation, some of my current favorite games are #Stellaris and #Tropico6. I just like resource optimization over time.

I grow vegetables and some fruit trees. Trying to get really hot chilis growing here as they aren't readily available in stores. I have eaten the One Chip Challenge without even wincing a bit. I am a #ChiliHead.

I administrate all sorts of online communities and web pages. I read a lot of books and whenever I get into a new domain, I tend to read several definitive reference books of the topic from cover to cover. For example I now know more about #cancer biology than I ever thought I would.

I used to take a lot of #Coursera courses, also in non-technical topics such as #virology, #BrainPhysiology, #AnimalBehavior and such.

We have 3 cats, 2 siamese and 1 rescued as a kitten from the neighboring empty plot where he was born.

I last month I brought back from south India some dried byadgi chili peppers for cooking and last week I planted the seeds from one of them, it's the first time I get chili seeds that sprout so fast and I am very happy about it. It is the first time i hear about them, let's see if they taste good.

I have a variety of spicy #pepper flakes that I sprinkle on pizza (and many other foods). There are some good mixes out there that let you dial in both the heat and flavor. Carolina #Reaper flakes are the hottest I’ve encountered. I recently had flakes from my daughter’s home grown Madame Jeanette peppers (see chart) and those were very tasty!

Made Goulash for these cold days. Extra spicy :ablobcatbongo:

Goulash with beef and a little bacon. A standard recipe with caraway and majoram, onion, bell pepper, carrot, potato, fresh and canned tomato and of course chilis.
I used for 1 kg 2.2lb meat fresh:
2x 7-pot Barrackpore
3 Scotch brain yellow
1 tsp Cayenne powder and 2 tsp sweetpepper for some smokey aroma.
All together about 3 liters. (~0.8 US gal, ~0,65 UK gal)

Just found out my local supermarket carries ghost peppers. Later tonight, I will find out just how much of my face melts off from taking a bite.

Ich weiß endlich, welche Sorte, meine Bürochilipflanze ist, die vor einigen Wochen die ersten Früchte gebildet hat. 🥳

Knapp 8 Jahre alt, viele ungünstige Standorte, oft vernachlässigt, mehrfach schon dem "Tod entronnen" und nun die erste reife Frucht.

Also, added a home grown Bahamian Goat Pepper, the first of its kind!
Made the sauce extremely spicy, but added some real nice flavour, too.

If you like spicy food, try some Capsicum Chinese chilies. They have a really unique flavour!

My two window chilis.

A Thai Birds Eye (left) and a Chiero Roxa. These have been growing since Ferbruary 2023 inside at an East facing window.
The Thai is from seeds bought locally in Thailand and the Chiero Roxa are said to come from Brazil.

They have been suffering from aphid infestation but they have lacewing larva patrolling their foliage and the aphids are almost gone. I topped the Chiero Roxa in April and have been rewarded with many peppers. I didn't top the Thai as it was very slow in the beginning and it's only now starting to fruit.

I have been having a continued attack by aphids on my window sill chilis. I tried manually removing them but it was futile. Winged ones fly in and multiply quickly. Insecticidal soap was unsuccessful as my chilis didn't like that. After 2 weeks of that I finally accepted I need help for this in the form of the merciless special forces: Chrysoperla carnea larvae!

Otherwise known as the Common Green Lacewing larva these brutal helpers will hunt and eat aphids, thrips, spidermites, whitefly and more.

Here are three pictures of them. The second one shows one eating an aphid.

Seed starting

This is how I usually start my seeds especially if there are too few or rare ones.
I wash all utensils well.
I use 2-5 seeds depending on fertility and amount I have for each chili plant. I soak them for 1 day in distilled water or 1% Potassium Nitrate in an ice cube tray at room temperature. I cover that with plastic film/bag.
The next day I place them in a plastic tray with an air tight lid to contain the moisture. I place the seeds on 4-5 layers of moist, not wet kitchen paper to maintain moisture. I also use a small 7W heat mat with thermostat and a thermometer with a sensor and keep it between 27 and 29°C (80-85°F). I place the tray in a waterbath to keep the temperature stable. I normally have high sprout rates >60% and mostly within 10 days, even with older seeds. (I've had good rates with 9 year old Ghost seeds.)

A transparent plastic tray viewed from above about 15x5cm (6x2in). A metal sensor lies in the middle with a cable going though the side of the tray. The bottom of the tray has wet paper towels with a 4x2 grid with 2 seeds in each section.

I had some fun making chilpaste based on Nam Prik Pao but with yellow chilis. This is my method:

Recipe
2 sweet bell peppers chopped (yellow)
2 fresh Scotch Brains Yellow (heat:10+)
5 cloves of fresh garlic
3 tbsp fishsauce
2 tbsp rice vinegar
3 tbsp vegetable oil
4 tbsp sugar
½ tsp salt

:science: Roast the unpeeled garlic cloves and chopped onions without oil until just browning. Remove and set aside.
Roast the chopped chilis the same way in the same pan.
Add all ingredients to a blender or food processor. Pulse a few times or longer for a smoother texture.
Add 1 tbsp vegetable oil to the pan and cook the blend for 10-15 until it thickens and darkens in color. Keep mixing to avoid burning.

Makes about 250ml. Keeps for a couple of weeks in the fridge. It's good as a condiment, on toast or ingredient for other dishes.

A Scotch Brain Yellow chili variety on the plant. It is 3x2 cm WxH shaped like a pumpkin with a rough surface and a few mm tail on the end.There are some unripe ones around it.Yellow chili paste in two approximately 100ml jars. One is hexagonal and the other round when viewed from above.

My 9 year old daughter is eating a cayenne pepper she just picked herself. Not with anything. Just the pepper. That's my girl!
