You have to see it to believe it!🙄

#Infographic #ClosedSource #OSS #Software #Bundesverwaltung #Oracle

#ClosedSource Meets #OpenSource: #Microsoft's Founder #BillGates and #Linux's Creator #LinusTorvalds Cross Paths For First Time in 50yr
Both of them were seen at a dinner hosted by #MarkRussinovich, CTO of Microsoft #Azure
Gates focuses on innovation through acquisition and corporate control, but Linux's creator is all about collaboration.
Probably, difference in ideologies is primary reason why they haven't met, but apart from that, there isn't known enmity between them.

This is a wonderful development. When you buy a fully assembled Computing system chances are high that you are also paying for a license for an operating system which is closed 🔒 source.

It often happens that people buy the hardware without thinking about the steep amount of money they pay for the license, when they don't even use it since they will run either a free GNU / GPL Open Source Operating System or an Operating System from the Berkeley side of Open Source.

Regardless paying for a license which you will not use is never a good thing.

When you go to this site you will be able to get a refund for that license you never ever used nor ever shall use.

It starts out in Italy but shall be expanded to other countries soon.

The image shows a screenshot of a webpage from Refund4Freedom, focusing on the "Demands / Refund" section. The top of the page displays the website's URL, "en.refund4freedom.org," along with a navigation bar that includes options like "Supporting Material" and "Share!" The main content area features a blue background with a graphic of a laptop with a Windows logo on the left, a minus sign, a Windows logo, an equals sign, and a laptop with a heart on the right, symbolizing the message of refunding Windows licenses. Below the graphic, there is a text block that reads: "Get your Windows license refund now! We all know the joy of acquiring a new laptop and the excitement of exploring its features and functionalities. However, the vast majority of laptops are only sold with a specific proprietary operating system: Microsoft Windows. The vendors do not remove the Windows license, and you must pay the entire price, even if you do not want to use this system. This is unfair and we want to change it! Consumers should be able to buy laptops without any specific operating system, and should not pay the license price if they don't want to use it." The text is in white, and the website's language is set to English, as indicated by the "EN" button. The image shows a screenshot of a mobile device displaying a webpage titled "Refund4Freedom." The page is divided into sections, with the top section labeled "Demands" and the sub-section "Supporting Material / Share!" The background is a gradient of blue shades, with white text. The main content reads: "You should not have to pay for software you don't want. Devices like laptops and smartphones are general-purpose computers so, they should be neutral in relation to the software they run. Manufacturers and vendors should not have the right to impose specific operating systems on you. When you request a refund, the process should be easy, quick and straightforward. Here's what we demand: 1. Do not restrict users to specific software. Device manufacturers and vendors should not impose an operating system or software on consumers, and should not force them to pay for software that they don't want. Laptops and smartphones are general-purpose computers, so users should be able to run software they want on their devices." The bottom of the screen shows a language selection button labeled "EN" and navigation iconsThe image displays a mobile phone screen with a dark blue background. At the top, there is a status bar showing the time as 10:36, a Wi-Fi signal, a battery level of 82%, and a temperature of 27 degrees Celsius. Below the status bar, there is a navigation bar with the text "Refund4Freedom / Demands / Refund / Supporting Material / Share!" in white and blue text on a black background.

The main content area features two numbered demands in white text on a blue background. The first demand, numbered 2, states: "Transparent pricing. Consumers should have the right to decline pre-installed software, including the operating system, but still be able to buy the laptop without it." The second demand, numbered 3, states: "Hassle-free refunds. Manufacturers and vendors should clearly publish the steps for requesting and obtaining a refund on their websites. The process should be simple, easy, and accessible to any consumer. No one should go through unnecessary or complicated procedures, such as sending the entire computer to a service center just to remove unwanted software."

At the bottom of the screen, there is a blue button with the text "Take action!" in white. Below this button, there is a heading in white text that reads "How to request your license refund." At the very bottom of the screen, there is a navigation bar with three icons: three vertical lines, a circle with a line through it, and a left-pointing arrow.

Today I learned the following. Journaling and journaling are two separate distinctly separate manners of keeping file systems in Sync.

When microsoft talks about journaling in NTFS you should never, ever think about the robust journaling system that Ext4 has

In comparison EXT4 journaling is a god while en NTFS journaling is not even an ant

I have EXT4 file systems connected to an extremely unstable machine. This thing crashes to green screens more than 64 times a day.

{It's a Gigabyte Mini PC in case you're interested never buy those. The machine came with overheating errors from the beginning. The factory installed a fan for the APU which is not even suitable for a GPU that was made a decade ago}

I've not even lost one bit of data on those EXT4 file systems.

Those NTFS file systems with journaling? I lost all of them. All NTFS file systems were lost

I didn't lose data because I have backups the file systems just keeled over simply because the machine kept rebooting

Thank you for being so robust EXT4

I love reading Books. I love reading physical books, you know the ones that you hold in your hand. I love Foliate, which I have encountered on one of my Open Source operating system distributions.

Since I love reading physical books it was normal and natural for me that Foliate had a regular light theme because paper is white to light yellow.

The light theme was chosen even though my desktop had a dark team, also logical.

Now I was fortunate enough to get a free set of fantastic books which are accessible through a DRM walled system by Amazon. Their closed Source clients did the following infuriating thing.

When it started it up, kindle gave a brief warning that it was going to change something which turned out to be the theme which it brought to dark, and I have not found the easily accessible option to change it back to the light theme.

How Bad a programmer must you be, to change something as important as a theme in a ebook reader and not put easily accessible option to change it back.

I know what I'll do; I'm going to strip the DRM of the books, so that I can read them in my normally programmed Open Source eBook reader, which doesn't change the theme at all, especially not for no apparent logical reason

Grrr

The image displays a page from a book titled "The Sotted Swan." The text is set against a black background with white font, creating a stark contrast. The first line of the text is centered and reads "1," followed by the title in a larger font size. Below the title, the narrative begins with a description of a man in the corner of a room, leaning against the wall with his chair tipped back on two legs. His feet rest on a table, and he wears a coarse brown hood that frames his face. The man's eyes gleam in the firelight as he scans the room. A battered pewter mug sits on the table, untouched for half an hour or more. A large staff, six feet of oak, stands against the wall nearby, with a glint of steel visible at his belt. The staff has unsavory reddish-brown stains, suggesting it has been used for more than just walking. The man appears ready to break heads at the slightest provocation, and other patrons at the Sotted Swan keep their distance. The text continues to describe the man as the narrator's partner, Boog, who is part of the Inquisitor's Guild, tasked with investigating crimes and upholding the laws of Frosthelm. The narrator and Boog sit near-motionless in a tavern for three hours, with the chimney not drawing and soot coating the walls and ceiling. The text concludes with a note indicating "1 min left in chapter" and "1%."

Vieleicht eher #unpopularOpinion:

#DonaldTrump ist DAS BESTE was Europa (längerfristig gesehen) passieren konnte!

Hey in either and or commercial, I'm curious what are the aspects of your work that you find true joy in regardless if you could use to take care of things? What aspects, if any, are a burden that ai can lift and what are things you would always prefer doing? I know how I feel as an artist but interested in your worldview in your field.

This is one important reason why you should rip yourself away from closed source underlords

The destruction of your privacy by ripping your adblock extensions a new

I stopped using Alphabet's google chrome 100% before this came into effect

It wasn't just 30 million people using this extension by the way it was much much more (close to 300 million users?)

@mozilla @Timpostma @stefano

The screencap shows a Chrome Web Store page for the uBlock Origin extension. The page is displayed in a web browser with a dark theme. At the top, the browser's address bar shows the URL "chromewebstore.com/detail/ublock-origin/cpiladnbfamjdmhnhpkljkegj1p1k1". The page is titled "chrome web store" and includes options for "Discover," "Extensions," and "Themes." The uBlock Origin extension is highlighted, with a rating of 4.7 stars from 34.2K ratings, and is categorized under "Extension" and "Privacy & Security," with 30,000,000 users. A message indicates that the extension is no longer available because it doesn't follow best practices for Chrome extensions, with a "Learn more" link. Below, alternative extensions are suggested, including uBlock Origin Lite, Adblock, AdGuard AdBlocker, and Ghostery Tracker & Ad Blocker, each with their ratings and user counts. The page also includes a "Remove from Chrome" button.

Making films outside Hollywood is a national security threat to the US and is worthy of tariffs. Why isn't the rest of the world putting tariffs on US-made Big Tech? We've known for years that Big Tech and FISA don't respect other countries, and tariffs on services are OK.
