1/n Notes on #UAP Discussions : We'll keep on with different angles on this while nothing else is pending...
It's December 2017. #LeslieKean and a band of rebels have been up to no good (kidding). The #NYT goes all in. This sets off a cascade of events that continues, more or less, to the present. A #UAP committee. Congressional hearings. Investor money...
Segue. #Astrophysics and the search for #Exoplanets. The #DrakeEquation. Modified Drake. Better instruments. Better data...

Are you alone is (usually) a relatively easy question to answer...

But are WE (e.g., life on Earth) alone (in the Universe) is a bit more complex...

Enter the Drake Equation for some of your important are we alone pondering...

Infographic illustrating the Drake Equation against a starry space background. Across the top in large yellow text: “N = R* × fₚ × nₑ × fₑ × fᵢ × f𝚌 × L.” Each variable is labeled and paired with a circular image and an upward yellow arrow.

**N:** “The number of technologically advanced civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy,” shown with a spiral galaxy image.
**R*:** “The rate of formation of stars in the galaxy,” shown with a nebula.
**fₚ:** “The fraction of those stars with planetary systems,” shown with a planet.
**nₑ:** “The number of planets per solar system with an environment suitable for life,” shown with an ocean scene.
**fₑ:** “The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears,” shown with microscopic green cells.
**fᵢ:** “The fraction of life-bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges,” shown with a fossilized hand imprint.
* **f𝚌:** “The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space,” shown with a radio telescope dish.
**L:** “The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space,” shown with a clock face.
Along the bottom in blue text, a related formulation reads: “A = Nₐₛₜ × f_bt.” **A:** “The number of technological species that have formed over the history of the observable universe.”
**Nₐₛₜ:** “The number of habitable planets in a given volume of the universe.”
**f_bt:** “The likelihood of a technological species arising on one of these planets.”

This web site that I put together some time ago let's the user put in ranges of values for each #DrakeEquation parameter, since we have better estimates of realistic ranges of values than precise parameter values.

Then the site uses Monte Carlo statistics to run a couple thousand solutions on the parameter ranges.

80 years ago a wrong decision was made that began a new era of high technology death and suffering that will eventually kill all of us.

I'm thinking we're unlikely to make to a century.

It's that darn #DrakeEquation "L"

Hey. OK.

Nice while it lasted.

Maybe some extraterrestrials will get a chuckle watching Comedy Central or The Late Show.

Makes the entirety of human existence worthwhile, somehow.

I wrote a book.

It is called "For the hypothetical aliens" and it is about our place in the universe, how we relate to nature, and what that means for us, individually.

It takes a stance somewhat centred on the dissonance between a SciFi way of looking at things vs. "realism".

It's about 40 pages of actual poetry plus the contents page, acknowledgements etc and (warning) it does contain one five page poem purporting to be about a mathematical equation...

The usual price is £5 but I am discounting them to £4 at the moment. Shipping in the UK is £1.80.

If you live elsewhere in the world we'll have to strategize because there have been problems sending pamphlets/magazines from the UK since Brexit 😢.

If you want to order one, or invite me to read from it at your poetry evening, please PM me.

About the author	53Cover of a poetry pamphlet, the title is "For the hypothetical aliens". It is orange and worn, like an old document folder, and it has some sort of security stamp declaring the contents top have been reclassified "Non sensitive"View of the whole, opened cover of a poetry pamphlet called "For the hypothetical aliens" and with a logo proclaiming it is from "Literal Fraud Press". It carries the image of fake wear and tear, with particularly deep scratches on the back...An inside page from a poetry pamphlet showing the start of a poem:

_The universe speaks to you_

I - Water...

...flows,
but has no thought of flowing. Every droplet
of rain free
to follow its weird
find its level
bead the underside
of a leaf, the whole
nonetheless
adding up to moorland brook, burbling
here and now and in a single direction. Far downstream,
current toys with grit
does not imagine things better
if this pebble were elsewhere
but nags at it
wobbles it
urges it to move
and a mere
thousand years later
a mighty estuary deltas
one side of the continent. The stream meanwhile
is cutting a new channel
through the limestone ridge.

Each molecule is part of something larger
and doesn't know
or things it knows do not make sense. Water's
unfeeling mechanism
floods a city or builds an ecosystem
and even if the outcome of civilisation
is nothing humans comprehend
it will be that rich.

Looking at that there en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline and it seems Multicellular life of the sort we adore only has a billion years of viability on Earth, whether a technological species fucks things up temporarily or not.
Life will be abundant in the Galaxy, complex life that we don't need microscopes to see, not so.

A new study suggests that we may be relatively alone in the universe. The analysis is based on the premise that, given a group of similar Earth-like planets, life should arise on nearly all of them or none of them given the lack of differences that would cause life to arize on some of them. That would mean that intelligent, technological life should also either be very common or very rare. The lack of evidence so far to detect signals from other civilizations then led scientists to conclude that such life may therefore be rare, for any number of reasons.

The unsurprising non-detection of intelligent #aliens
Life arose on Earth very early on. After a few billion years, here we are: intelligent and technologically advanced. Where's everyone else?
The #DrakeEquation, while popular to solve the #FermiParadox, has some problems.

Considering that our radio signals have only reached about 15,000 stars to date, this is a minuscule fraction when we take into account the potential number of civilizations suggested by the Drake Equation. We require significantly more time to make contact, even if we factor in the possibility of receiving a response from a civilization at a similar stage of development to ours. This extended time frame may coincide with humanity's progression to a Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale. At this point, humanity may undergo a transformation, potentially ceasing to exist as a biological species. It's worth noting that we are still quite a distance from reaching a Type I civilization, which, according to Kardashev, is characterized by a societal structure akin to communism. 🙂
