In #Carboniferous, global #forests appeared, covering #tropical zones with tree-high #horsetails, #clubmosses, and #ferns. #Oxygen levels rose, and #CO2 was bound for transforming peat into lignite and #bituminous #coal. The climate later became colder i.a. due to the decreasing greenhouse gas leading to the Permo-Carboniferous Ice Age period.

Seemingly root area of Sigillariaceae (or Lepidodendron relationship), both representing clubmosses (Lycopodiaceae). Bituminous coal is common in the Southwest of Germany and represents remnants of Carboniferous tropical forests. Beautiful fossils, mainly plant fossils, can for example be found in Saarland, as for example this piece of a two colored lower trunk area. © My collection, photo © Stefan F. Two photos from today's walk. A neat shelf fungi (there's a puddle on it, which I don't see often) and a VERY ferny rock.

On an unrelated note, consider checking out freeameri.ca if you're interested in liberal American political action this coming Tuesday. That would be cool of you. If that doesn't appeal, then enjoy your day anyway.

Two brown shelf fungi chill on the underside of a fallen tree. They're handsome little dudes. A bit lumpy, but who among us isn't?Dozens of ferny fronds burst from a mossy rock out in some woods.

Winterizing ferns in my Freedom Avenue laundry room, 1995. I have propagated these porch plants from three original Klinglers' Produce ferns, for over thirty years.

A low angle, vertical orientation photograph of a steep, metal staircase ascending sharply through a dense, dark green rainforest. The wooden handrails, painted white, appear worn and weathered, guiding the eye up. The steps lead directly toward a bright, sunlit patch at the top, where the warm colors of a building are barely visible, creating a strong contrast between the dark foreground foliage and the light background. Large ferns flank the staircase on both sides.

This week's episode of #Farnsehen takes us back to #NewboroughWarren (or #TywynNiwbwrch in Welsh), where Corsican and Scots pines were planted on artificial dunes from the 1940s to the 1960s to provide timber, stabilize the shifting dunes, and protect the nearby village from sand encroachment. The #ferns love it here, too. Now though, the sand is receding for various reasons, and some trees are being removed to help restore the sand habitat. Nature is hard work, constantly shifting and evolving, with seemingly small things, like fewer rabbits, threatening the balance. ⚖️

A close-up view of a lush, green forest floor, densely covered with vibrant fern fronds. The ferns, with their delicate, feathery leaves, dominate the foreground, creating a rich tapestry of greenery. In the background, the trunks of tall trees rise, their bark a mix of dark and light shades, suggesting a mature woodland. The scene is bathed in natural light, filtering through the canopy above, casting soft shadows and highlighting the intricate details of the ferns and forest floor.

Braune vertrocknete Blätter von Farnen hängen von einer Felswand herab. Die Blätter sind wie Schillerlocken um sich selbst und dann um den Stiel gedreht.
