#FreeDesktop

Short answer: Try Shotwell. It's really a photo "manager" but it includes automatic gallery-style viewing features, time-sorted. It should be close enough to what you need! 🤞

Technobabble: I wouldn't call this a "Linux" problem. For instance, the same Linux kernel is part of both GNU/Linux and Android, but the issue is broader: "everything is a file in a directory tree" is how Unix has worked since the 1970s, and all its descendants follow that model — including Apple's desktop and mobile systems. On phones (and dedicated cameras), camera apps save images to well‑known directories and gallery apps read and index those folders. The same method works on any #FreeDesktop environment: keep your photos in ~/Pictures and use, e.g., Shotwell — it will automatically read the folder and show a gallery when you open it if you enable "watch library directory for new files." I hope this info helps your quest.

I'm incredibly excited to see some initial investigation and experiments around making Mutter resilient against GPU crashes: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/

Thank you @rmader and @jadahl for planning such improvements to improve GNOME's robustness as part of the FreeDesktop graphics stack!

TIL that Steam's "Add non-Steam program" feature ignores the working directory part of Linux .desktop files, instead using the directory containing the binary as the working directory... I guess I have to restructure some things so that my game's .desktop file works with Steam 🤦

Hey @pid_eins was going to post to the XDG list but it seems dead over there. The link[1] to the Sound theme spec is dead and seems to have fallen to the wayside. As well as the default sound theme being a bit long in tooth. Is there planned work here or an updated specification somewhere. If not, i'd like to go ahead and clean this up while i'm trying to figure out wtf everything Gnome is doing with the sound spec right now. It could definitely use some love, thanks!

I stumbled upon a 2300-pages-long PDF document that actually is a fantastic benchmark for slow search performance (1.5 to 5 minutes) in most PDF readers (including GNOME Papers, Evince and Okular)… so I fired up through GNOME Builder to measure the slowness, and reported my findings in for all of you performance optimization aficionados: gitlab.freedesktop.org/poppler

Screenshot of the flamegraph view of Sysprof's performance profile capture of a very slow search operation. It shows the exact names of the functions called causing the slowness.

Why would you want to disable one of the best practical features of #FreeDesktop, probably what people miss the most when they have to use something else? Please, #GNOME, stop making these mistakes.

Does anyone know if it's possible to blacklist the driver for a specific app on ? On that point the Nvidia driver is just a runtime extension right? It extends the runtime and by extension (teehee) also extends the runtime? GNOME Web keeps waking the Nvidia GPU up on my laptop, I can't think of any situation where I'd want the GPU to even be seen by apps like this so I'm hoping I can just unload the driver for the apps I don't want it on.

Pro Tip™ from @pwithnall for app developers: if you want your application to be easily found in the GNOME Software app center store, you need to add "keyword" metadata fields to complement your app's name and tagline. The "description" metadata field is not used for searching!

Some examples:
* gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-c
* gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evoluti
* bugs.launchpad.net/homebank/+b
* github.com/flathub/org.libreof

Big props to the @kde Plasma team for going only with the next major release (6.8): blogs.kde.org/2025/11/26/going

Together with @gnome removing X11 code from its core components in GNOME 50, it is clear that the majority of the will be moving forward with much greater sustainability when it comes to maintaining the multimedia & graphics-related middleware on and .

Finally, after 21 years, 147 on Linux will support part of the XDG basedir specification by storing config/data/etc. in the $XDG_CONFIG_HOME folder (usually "~/.config/"), for fresh installations: bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.

Unfortunately they have no plans to separate config from data and cache so it's all shoved into the same folder, and this only applies to clean installs (existing configs are kept in place and not automatically migrated), but eh… progress? 🤷

GNOME is finally dropping ancient X11 / Xorg code from the "Mutter" compositor & window manager: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/

All those 27,000+ lines of ancient C code across 183 files will finally be lost in time, like tears in the rain 😌

I'm looking forward to the benefits of a more maintainable codebase, QA, and bug tracker. In 2026, I think we'll need help to clean up hundreds of old X11-specific bug reports.

We adopted the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard at Freedesktop! It's now part of the regular set of specifications, and we can make edits, of course.

Right now, it is very historically interesting, but hopefully it will be practical in future too and receive some modernization!

You can read the current HTML spec of FHS 3.0 at:

I was thinking... What about a #wine runtime for #flatpak, but not based on #freedesktop and instead stripped down to the bare minimum, with its addons (mono, gecko, etc.) packaged as runtime extensions? We could even take advantage of runtime versionning for specific use-cases, like games that only works with v9.0.
