#GRUB

I f'ing hate windows.

I had a windows machine, moved to linux - but without a hard cut. Yeah.

Now I wanted to add the former windows ssd to the LVM in #linux. Guess.

After rebooting no valid system disk was found. Then I restored the old partition table and my #grub-infested system was replaced by a "windows needs to be repaired" without any hope ...

Well. Thank god I did so many chroots in #Gentoo, I just got everything working again. But the Win-snafu is still around. 😒️

Fedora 42 is kinda messing with my mind right now... the GRUB2 entry all become "Fedora Linux 42 (Workstation Edition)" without Kernel version... After some investigation, realized on line 192 in `/usr/lib/kernel/install.d/90-loaderentry.install`, for all kernel entries generated to /boot/loader/entries/, it only uses $PRETTY_NAME from /etc/os-release for $title while GRUB2 loads only the $title... after modifying the title, it finally went normal...

Is there a German word for when you go through all of the hoops to get GRUB to set up a high resolution graphics mode for FreeBSD to boot into, only to find that GRUB hardwires being in text mode when it bootstraps FreeBSD?

I know some choice English ones. (-:

My #luks #encryption password dialogue in #grub is at 100% scale on my 4k Z16 #lenovo #thinkpad display (meaning, tiny, 50% of the size it should be).
So, I added `GRUB_GFXMODE=1920x1200` to my `/etc/default/grub` #configuration and concluded the change by running `sudo update-grub`.
This seems to have no effect. Even though it says `set gfxmode=1920x1200` in `/boot/grub/grub.cfg`
What am I doing wrong? 🫣

Well, since it’s already become grub, decided to make it look good

Ich würd gern dieses #grub-theme verwenden. Leider steht hier keine Anleitung dabei. Weiß eins von Euch zufällig, wie ich tun soll?

Help! #Boot / #GRUB advice:

I have a relatively new laptop. Recently when rebooting it just went to the GRUB bash-like interface rather than booting.

99 times out of 100 when rebooting the laptop doesn't recognize any USB key is plugged in and goes straight to GRUB recovery. #EFI boot sees the drives EFI files though.

1 in 100 times the whole thing boots just fine from either the drive or USB key.

BIOS hard drive diagnostics says it's fine.

Any ideas how to troubleshoot?

If you use a popular #Linux Distribution, you maybe stumbled into "grub-customizer": a tool that lets you tweak your grub bootloader with a shiny GUI.

Take my advice: DON'T use it. It fumbles around deep in your #grub configuration, swaps, adds and modifies files needed for booting. Don't install it just because you want a nice background picture for grub or so.

Uiii, das konnte ich heute nicht gebrauchen. Zum Glück hat der Temp Fix geholfen 🥹. Hoffe das Upgrade auf V8 ist nicht soviel Arbeit…

@delta glad to hear you are on top of things and of course advancing to new tech and transforming an initial base is hard.

Maybe backward compatibility should be sacrificed at some point even… making it EpsilonChat

Just look at #grub taking 10+ years to adapt to the #argon2i key derivation standard (still not implemented) making #FDE with #LVM on #LUKS still ‘hard to do’. so yeah…

For the HP Prodesk G4 (and other HP models) if the Keyboard or Mouse isn't working in the UEFI Firmware or Grub menus the workaround in the JetKVM is to go to:

Hardware -> Settings -> USB Devices

and select Keyboard Only in Classes.

There is something wonky with HP devices USB HID support at Boot that means it won't detect JetKVM USB HID devices if the Classes option is set to more than one item in the Classes list.

Weird 🤔🤷‍♂️

I have no idea how anyone is testing Deepin 25.

If you boot off the USB, you get a Grub terminal menu (Grub rescue). It is that broken.

The problem is it is broken on the ISO, so, I don't think you can fix it. -- I really dislike working with Grub, so I'll admit I didn't try.

@techhelpkb

TL;DR: #GRUB assumes that the file system is valid, and might execute arbitrary code if it isn't.

That is a perfectly valid assumption…or it would be if #Microsoft wasn't still trying to ice-skate uphill by pushing #SecureBoot.

News flash, Microsoft: Secure Boot is only secure if the #BIOS is secure, and I'm sorry to break it to you but that is absolutely hopeless.

Yes, #slackware current includes #Landlock support in the testing group with #kernel 6.14.
However, you must enable it at boot. If you're using #GRUB, follow these steps:

1. Add the following line to /etc/default/grub:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="lsm=landlock"

2. Regenerate the GRUB configuration:

geninitrd

3. Reboot your system and verify that Landlock is enabled:

sudo dmesg | grep landlock

Example output:

[ 0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-generic root=UUID=... ro lsm=landlock
[ 0.068388] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-generic root=UUID=... ro lsm=landlock
[ 0.212270] LSM: initializing lsm=capability,landlock
[ 0.212270] landlock: Up and running.

Once enabled, you can use landrun on Slackware-current:
