This is a black and white seascape photo of a coastal lighthouse built on a small islet with snow covered mountains in the background. Kjeungskjær fyr, Norge (2023). The dark, near black sea water covers the lower quarter of the image with small waves of about one metre breaking the surface. Very slightly to the lower left of centre is our octagonal, brick built light house. The lighthouse is on the left side of a low islet or skerry that cannot be much more than a metre above the sea level and is about 50 metres long with a small jetty built on the far left side. The lighthouse or Fyr is octagonal in shape, built from stone and has an octagonal pitched roof with the lantern mounted on the left side above the roof. Beyond the deserted sea is a crisp horizon where the water meets the shore. The land rises with a few areas of rounded mountains with a tall, snow covered mountain ridge in the distant background. Above is a partly cloudy sky with only a few wisps of cirrus clouds. This is a black and white seascape photo in landscape format of a small sailing boat, underway and under sail, being very closely overtaken by a large (200m) vehicles carrier ship. Southampton Water, UK (2019). The lower third of the image is comprised of medium grey and slightly disturbed sea water. There is a distant and hazy horizon where the sea meets the land a few km away with a slightly elevated tree lined terrain and with a few small sailing boats visible near the far shore. Above is a overcast sky, devoid of any detail. In the centre of the image is our 'Car Carrier' ship. Viewed nearly in profile with the bow and port side in view. While the vessel has a sharp, faired prow separating the water ahead of the bow - the rest of the ships is very flat (above the waterline) resembling an ugly rectangular box, a ship designed with a purpose - not beauty. The lower quarter of the hull is a very light grey with the remainder being white. The words 'GRIMALDI LINES' are written in large bold, black letters, with 'GRAN BRETAGNA', the ship's name in smaller black lettering below the wheelhouse. The bridge is nearly above the blunt prow, with the usual collection of antennae above. 2/3 of the way aft is a dark large funnel with a large letter 'G' on it's side. Just aft of the ship's bow an a few metres away is a small sailing boat, sailing in the same direction as the ship and dwarfed by the size of the passing ship. The boat must think the deep water channel was meant for them!

This is a colour seascape photo of a ship entering harbour at sunrise with a lighthouse in the background. San Pedro, California (2018). The relatively calm waters of the ocean rise upwards to the quarter up level in the photo. In the centre if the image is the bow of a large container ship thats viewed obliquely with the bow and right side in view. The length of the ship stretches to near the left edge of the photo. Our container ship is underway, slowly, from left to right. The vessel is casting a blurred, colourful reflection on the rippled surface of the water. The still low morning sun is illuminating the side of the ship. The ship is riding high in the water with about two metres of red antifouling in view. The hull is black while the superstructure near the stern is white. On the deck are hundreds, probably thousands of multi-coloured 40ft shipping containers with many more stowed below deck. Above and behind the ship's bridge is a short funnel with a wisp of black engine exhaust streaming behind. On the ships starboard side is a tug attached with a stout line to the ship's bow. To the right of the ship is a white, cylindrical lighthouse at the end of a breakwater with vertical black stripes and a black surround below the lantern. The distant background and sky is obscured with a milky morning haze. The ship is the 333 metre long 'YM UNANIMITY' entering the Port of Los Angeles. The lighthouse is the Los Angeles Harbor Light sometimes called the Angels Gate Light.

This is a colour dawn photo in landscape format of a large container ship leaving port. Port of Los Angeles, California (2018). The lower third of the photo is filled with dead calm harbour water with just the smallest ripples disturbing the surface. The water on the right side has vivid and colourful reflections from the port's floodlighting. On the right side is a row of 7 gantry cranes, used for the loading and unloading of shipping containers, all with their booms raised. Behind them and further to the right is the container terminal with rows of stacked containers. To the left of centre is the front of a large container ship heading towards the camera at dead slow, so slow the vessel is not creating any wake. Only the front and some of the top surfaces are in view. 2 or more metres of red anti-fouling can be seen above the waterline. The hull, while in shadow, is a dark green. There is a small floodlit mast above the bow. Also in shadow are the thousands of stacked shipping containers above the deck. Out of view, there are many stowed below deck. Above the upper row of containers the bridge can be seen with a long line of rectangular windows stretching across the width of the ship. Above and behind the wheelhouse are two funnels, one on either side. The starboard funnel emitting a trail of brown smoke while the port funnel has a heat haze above it. In the background is a warm orange glow from the still to rise morning sun.

The lower third of the image is filled with calm sea water with numerous small ripples disturbing dark, cobalt blue surface. In the centre is a large cruise ship occupying most of the length of the photo. The ship, viewed in profile, is underway from right to left and steaming across the frame. The vessel's large hull is all white with multiple decks. Two rows of portholes are below the lifeboat deck with about ten decks above. Most of the cabins have balconies, all being dimly lit. The uppermost deck has rows of bright lights strung along the length with the ship's name brightly illuminated in large, bold, white letters 'MSC Bellissima' - just forward of the middle of the ship. Further aft is a large structure containing the many large black exhausts pipes from the multiple engines and generators. On this black faux funnel is the illuminated logo of the shipping line, a gold star with a large 'M' and smaller 'sc' below (for 'Mediterranean Shipping Company'). Much of the ship is bathed in an orange glow from the internal and external lights. In the background is a layer of thin grey cloud that rises upwards to the halfway up point. Above is a near clear sky with an orange to golden glow of first light with the sun both below the horizon and behind the ship. There are just on or two small cirrus clouds in the otherwise clear sky.

This is a low contrast black and white photo in landscape format of a square rigged sailing ship underway and about to vanish into a bank of sea fog. Southampton Water, UK (2019). The lower quarter of the photo is filled with calm, flat and light grey sea water. There is an ill defined horizon with a thin sea fog, (a visibility of about one km), that obscures the sky and anything beyond. Very slightly to the right of centre is a two masted, tall ship, a brig, underway from left to right. The vessel has a historic look with a black hull, a thick white stripe running the length of the hull with square windows set in the stripe giving it the appearance of gun ports. Above the deck is a white deckhouse with 3 portholes and is located between the two masts. Stretching from the sides of the deck upwards to the first yard arm are ratlines, rope ladders, with sailors dressed in black, climbing up. Each mast has 3 yard arms with 6 sailors on the middle yard of the aft mast unfurling the sail. There are 2 further sets of ratlines, 1 reaching the upper yard, the other stretching to the mast head. The ship has just passed between 2 large navigation buoys marking the deep water channel. The nearer buoy has the words 'Black Jack' in bold white letters. Our ship is the 34m, 'TS Royalist'. A training ship, hence 'TS', owned and operated by the The Marine Society and Sea Cadets, carries 536 sq m of sail, has a permanent crew of 8, plus up to 24 Cadets and 2 adult trainees.
