Once I set up my #nextcloud at home, I'll also require an off-site backup. I was thinking about setting up another NAS at my parent's home which would VPN into my home network and just clone stuff from my main NAS.

Is this in general considered as best practice?

Which encryption to pick for the main Nas? Encryption "at rest" or "in transit"? (I assume at rest)

What are the best tools for cloning?

What do people use to do #offsite #backups with?

Currently I have a #zfs pool, on which I take a daily snapshot of certain datasets, clone them, and send those using #restic to a #hetzner #storagebox (with #encryption, #dedup and #compression activated).

Currently I have snapshots going back to mid 2022, which are being pruned according to a schedule, but I've already exceeded 5TB of storage.

I'd like something that'd perhaps slightly less convoluted, but also doesn't break the bank. I'd love to use straight ZFS #replication but that is priced out of my budget.

My #backup strategy:

All my servers are VMs running via Proxmox across 4 physical machines. There is a nightly backup of all servers on NAS-1. There is a weekly backup of all servers on NAS-2. There is a yearly backup of all virtual servers to a Blu-Ray that gets placed in a safety deposit box across town. NAS servers run 4-disk RAID-5. All physical drives run daily SMART tests and send results to Home Assistant and I get instant alerts if one fails.
