Sunsets have been very beautiful around here lately. Just up the coast, this National Park Service web camera image shows off the sunset colors seen from the Kuchel Visitor Center in Redwood National and State Parks. Pinks, oranges, peaches, yellows, greys, and whites can be seen in the clouds, which stream across a blue sky. Pacific Ocean waves roll towards the coast in the center. The greens of the vegetation in the foreground mingle with the greys of the temporarily beached driftwood. Thanks to the Redwood Parks Conservancy for supporting these cameras.

Green grasses, local wildlife, redwood forest, all in this morning’s view from Elk Prairie in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. The sign in the foreground reads “George A. Lancaster Memorial Grove.” The animals appear small because this photo was taken from quite a distance away. As this photo was being taken, a park visitor arriving on the scene and approaching more closely has aroused the attention of the herd. "California’s redwood trees are a national treasure and a living witness to our past. The largest of California’s redwoods grow in excess of two hundred and fifty feet tall and are capable of living for millennia. In recent years, an alarming number of old-growth trees residing in Redwood National Park have been shorn of the gnarled protrusions that grow on their trunks, called burls. Essential to the tree’s reproduction process, these burls are illegally cut by poachers who seek to sell the distinctive wood on the black market for use in fine woodworking. Concerned over the welfare of the iconic old-growth trees, photographers Kirk Crippens and Gretchen LeMaistre work with park rangers to access and photograph each damaged tree for their series, Live Burls. Working with a traditional 8x10 inch analog view camera, the artists produce breathtaking images that recall the majestic beauty of the ancient trees while drawing attention to the environmental injustice at hand. See "Live Burls" by #KirkCrippens and #GretchenLeMaistre , on display, pre-security in Terminal 1. http://bit.ly/2x8ZtST" This was posted to our Instagram account on September 17, 2018 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729357665/

I took a little early morning hike for my birthday a few days ago, and it was so nice to see the redwoods start to light up as the sun poked through.

View today from Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. On the left, a tree, a flag, and a solar-panel covered visitor center. Next, a gorgeous blue sky with a sprinkling of puffy white clouds. In the foreground, park infrastructure including roadways, fences, a parking area, a bench, and a few didactic panels. Anchoring all of this is a tan and blonde colored valley surrounded by tree-covered slopes and distant mountain peaks.

Redwood National and State Parks today. Days with a modest tide make getting around quite easy (A note of caution for those who are troubled by insects: this is the time of year when small biting insects drift in the coastal area and their bite far exceeds their size). View from the coastal area of Redwood National and State Parks today. The blue sky is a welcome sight. The addition of elegant flowing cloud forms is an added benefit. In the foreground, the Pacific Ocean meets the shore. The point in the distance is about a four mile walk round trip from the closest trailhead.

A view into a dense forest. This is the new National Park Service web camera site in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. The image has trees from edge to edge and from top to bottom. The bend in the tree trunks is an effect of the lens used to gather these images. Trees include redwood, tanoak, madrone, and others. On the forest floor are ferns and sorrel. A bit of sky is visible along the upper edge.

Today, I took a walk in a literal redwood rain forest five minutes from my house. Eureka, CA’s Sequoia Park, is their city park entirely within city limits. It is flat out stunning. It is humbling, restful, and energizing all at the same time.

There were kids laughing on the playground, a family setting up for a birthday celebration, teens posing for pics on a giant banana slug sculpture, and a lot of older folks simply walking and enjoying the trees… I’m saying it right now—I don’t think I’ll ever tire of the thrill of walking among trees with trunks twice as wide as my car and taller than 12-story buildings...

This helps reset my heart, you know?
