Current conditions in Redwood National and State Parks include numerous road and trail closures. Area roads leading to the various park sites also are experiencing the effects of recent storms. Definitely check the weather and road conditions before heading to the park over the holidays and be prepared with a full tank of fuel, rain gear, boots, food, etc. This image, taken over the weekend, shows the reds and greens of forest vegetation enhanced by recent rains. The two large trees in the foreground are each more than ten feet wide. Bright green needles appear on the tree on the left and a few ferns can be seen as well.

Saw the #ThickTrunkTuesdays, #ThickTrunkTuesday, #TreeTrunkTuesdays & #TreeTrunkTuesday tag in my feed and found the exact right moment to post this photo (which is somehow 20 years old) of young Jack with my arborist turned accountant father standing on a redwood stump when we lived in California. And the next job he had after this took us from California to Michigan was a nonprofit nursery devoted to repopulating the earth with redwoods!

This was an absolutely beautiful weekend to be out in the redwood forest. Cooler nighttime temperatures led to early morning fog that quickly dissipated, revealing bright blue skies and brilliant colors. In this image, a giant tree in Redwood National and State Parks appears to have two fused trunks. The ground below is red in the morning light. Yellow and green vegetation fills the background. Nearby trees are lit by the sun while more distant trees appear in silhouette.

Another opportunity in between the rainstorms to enjoy the beauty of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday and so there were numerous fungi and mosses on display. This is a yellow/orange fungus (possibly some type of coral fungus) perhaps an inch tall and very bright given its background of fallen leaves and other forest detritus. If any viewers know more about the proper identification of this one, please do share a response - thanks!Another opportunity in between the rainstorms to enjoy the beauty of Redwood National and State Parks yesterday and so there were numerous fungi and mosses on display. This is a particularly nice green moss with leaves (?) of about a quarter inch and very bright against the still wet tree trunk. Recent weather conditions in the coastal areas of Redwood National and State Parks have included rain, fog, wind, and more. Yesterday turned out to be a beautiful day to do a little beach cleanup, as the sun was out and the wind was low. This image shows a wide expanse of sandy beach with a tree-lined slope filling the horizon. Erosion resistant rocks form interesting points in this particular location (center and center left). The viewer can also see the presence of non-native plants in this setting, including several sunlit sections of pampas grass on the center right. Pacific Ocean waves appear on the left. The blue sky above holds a variety of clouds.

Redwood National and State Parks roads and trails generally remain open to visitors. This sign is from the Kuchel Visitor Center area, which has been closed during the shutdown. Redwood National and State Parks remain wonderful places to visit even during the current government shutdown. The NPS contingency plan provides detailed information regarding changes to visitor services, however, generally speaking, the roads and trails remain open, even as the visitor centers and associated parking areas are closed. This sign is from the access road to the Kuchel Visitor Center, which has been closed during the shutdown. That said, the surrounding areas are open and parking is available. Hope this helps you if you are planning a visit. (Sign on a red and white gate, with a road trailing off behind, all under a blue sky.)

A sunny walk yesterday in Redwood National and State Parks following a bit of rain and so we came across several interesting scenes including this white fungus, which is about three inches tall. Difficult to photograph as the light is generally low, but very pretty mixed together with other forest plants and detritus. Looks like it may be Fairy Fingers...

Does every tree on this count as a tree I painted? If so I've like tripped the amount of trees I've painted in the last few weeks.

But how else do you communicate the size of a redwood properly?

Chipper

I really think that chipmunks are fantastic little animals. I'm not sure why, maybe because of how cute they are.
I like the background in this image. I chose a wide aperture for this image to blur the background that happened to be a large redwood. I just thought that the contrast between big and small was fitting for this.

Chipper

Imagine standing quietly in a forest where the air is cool and earthy, and the towering redwoods stretch skyward like ancient sentinels. In the foreground, perched confidently on a burl is a chipmunk. She’s small, with a sleek body and a bushy tail curled slightly behind her. Her fur is a warm blend of browns and soft grays, with delicate stripes running down her back like brushstrokes.
She’s alert, eyes wide and glistening, as if caught mid-thought or mid-adventure. The background is softly blurred, a deliberate choice that makes the chipmunk pop visually while hinting at the massive redwood behind her. That contrast—tiny creature, monumental tree—evokes a sense of wonder and scale.
