"With variable media, it really is a question of painstakingly reconstructing the display history of an artwork as it was shown in the past in relation to the intent of the artist at the moment of making the work, and also how that might have evolved over time. Because it does happen that an artist starts with a certain viewpoint on how it work needs to be shown. And maybe even after the first display, they realize something that they had in their mind really doesn't work and they need to shift it. But what happens if the curators use the visual references to the first display of that work as their primary source, and it's actually not the one that the artist was happiest with? As a curator, you're not going to know unless you do in that research around the history of the work and have an opportunity to ask the artist or the representatives really how they feel about that mode of display."
