I was planning to go to BSDCan this week but some other things conspired to make that not possible.

In the meantime the 'NAS Build' for my niece's small business continues. The concept is a fully contained, lightweight 10" rack with storage, network, services, and firewall for her SOHO business that can be easily picked up and moved if the need arises. Plug in power and Internet and her entire office is back in business is the crux of the idea.

I got a 3D printer a while ago and had done novelty prints with it but this is the first 'production' stuff I have printed.

Big learning curve for certain - some of the items have had to be reprinted a number of times - some inconsistent things are happening. I'm not doing myself any favours by going straight to ABS perhaps. Also, slow iteration when it takes multiple days to print something. Starting to get the hang of it... maybe.

Fun! Beats $dayjorb handily.

I did another service call on EAR Inn today. The A and funky "R" were looking the orange look of going bad, and those transformers were acting up.

They notice it tends to go sometimes in the rain- its because the transformers are sitting on wet wood (I propped them up on foam blocks as a temporary fix).

Water always gets in these things, and because NYC has "Grandfather sign" laws, it cannot be taken down and remade in Aluminum, hence the rust bucket nature.

So I met the owner- a lovely Irish guy and I asked if he was ok with me remaking the entire letters and he said "whichever is cheapest". Since there are already a bunch of bad welds and bends in there I am gonna trace my usual patterns and do just that.

And add some bent metal on the inside to prop the transformers up and keep them shielded from water. I also want to put one 8kv, little transformer on each letter as opposed to three 9kvs

A Very Useful shot for me of the housing placement. The electrodes push into these springs sleeved in glass that send the neon's high voltage safely through the steel into the sign structure where all the transformers and wiring are. I have to hit these targets when I bend the glass. And since these patterns are tracings of decades of other peoples work and no templates exist, this photo will tell me a few mm here and there to nail the middle of both of the housings.

The Black EAR inn sign wioththe E and A all jumped out. Donald did the A and I did the R. I took both of the letters down myself though :). "EST 1817 AD" is painted below the neon in white lettering
