#Sparrows

Another unexpected visitor on the terrace today (there sure is a lot going on here although it's still under construction and pretty bare): a young #sparrow!

Don't know if it collided with the window and was a bit dazed or just hot and needed a break from learning to fly and feed itself. It didn't move and we could have touched it. We put some water and mealworms next to it. Don't know if it took any, when I checked half an hour later, it was gone (hopefully not with the help of a friendly cat 😅).

You can see it's a juvenile because the bill (or rather gape flange) is still yellowish. Adult #sparrows have dark bills.

A detailed close-up shows a small, brown house sparrow fledgling with a light brown breast and head, and dark brown and black striped wings. It is perched on a light grey stone or concrete surface, looking to its left. Two small, reddish-brown mealworms are visible on the ground near its feet. The background is a soft blur of similar grey tones.

And, as anticipated, they have nibbles the tip off #sparrows

Suddenly all the sparrows disappeared in my garden. But this one still was staring at me in the tree. I hope they all come back soon. #nature #fotos #birds #birdsphotography #mygarden #birdsofpixelfed #sparrows

In case anyone is curious, reflective flash tape does not deter mobs of sparrows from eating pea plants. (This is not my plot.) #GrowYourOwn #allotment #garden #gardening #peas #birds #sparrows

Earth-Toned Elegance

I had some trouble identifying this bird as a house sparrow (Passer domesticus), despite the abundance of them around lately. I think the angle of this shot makes the bird look slightly different, altering its usual appearance. Also, this seems to be a female—most of my photographs of house sparrows tend to feature males.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

"This image features a house sparrow (Passer domesticus), perched with an alert posture, its small frame exuding a quiet confidence. The bird's compact body is covered in a mix of earthy browns, tans, and soft grays, with intricate feather patterns adding texture and depth to its appearance. A distinctive dark bib on its throat, characteristic of male house sparrows, contrasts sharply with its lighter chest, creating a striking visual detail.

Its beady black eyes are sharp and observant, surveying the surroundings with keen awareness. The short yet sturdy beak, built for seed-cracking, adds to its practical, resourceful nature. The background is softly blurred, drawing attention to the fine details of the sparrow's plumage and the delicate balance of its stance. There’s a sense of stillness in the image, yet an underlying energy—ready to take flight in an instant." - Copilot

I have been offline today. I drew a song sparrow.... #ChalkArt #StreetArt #Birds #SongSparrow #Sparrows

A chalk drawing of a song sparrow on a blade of reed or strong grass. It has a mainly white chest with flecks of black and a shape like a heart in black feathers. Its wings are brown. A yellow thread like smoke comes out of its mouth--this is its song. It's labeled "Melospiza melodia Song Sparrow"Closest close-up on the song sparrow: just its face, its open mouth with a yellow-white smoke (its song) coming out of it. A green aura surrounds its head. Its back is brow, its chest is white flecked with black.Close up on the song sparrow. You can see its stripy face and brown wings and its white-flecked with-black breast, plus its pink feet and the yellow-white song coming from its mouth. It has an aura of golden green around it.

House Sparrows are still here! They didn't abandon the nest after all! We spotted the male sleeping on a porch support last night, and this morning, I saw the female fly up into the birdhouse, followed by the male popping out of it!

I am so pleased. :)

Urban Survivor

While walking with Charlie, I spotted a small bird perched on a fence we passed. Uncertain of its species, I paused to take a closer look. As it turns out, it was a fairly common female house sparrow (Passer domesticus). The composition of the scene, with its natural tones and quiet simplicity, isn't too bad.

"The image captures a female house sparrow perched delicately on the bottom rung of a black wrought iron fence. The dark metal contrasts beautifully with her soft, earthy tones, making her presence even more striking. Small patches of lichen cling to the iron, adding texture and hints of green to the otherwise monochromatic structure.

Her compact frame is adorned with subtle shades of brown and gray, blending harmoniously with the environment. Her underbelly is a pale, muted tone, while the feathers on her back display intricate patterns of warm browns and gentle streaks. She grips the cold metal firmly with her tiny claws, exuding both fragility and quiet resilience.

Her beady, dark eyes shine with curiosity, and her petite, pointed beak is poised as if she’s mid-thought. The sunlight filters through the surroundings, casting soft highlights across her delicate features. Though she lacks the bold markings of a male house sparrow, there is an undeniable elegance in her understated beauty." - Copilot

Song sparrow? From Nicholas Lund on Audubon website: "The face has lovely stripes radiating from the bill: a strong brown line through the eye, a brown crown, and thick, parallel brown stripes framing a white stripe down along the throat. ... thick messy brown stripes running down the top and sides of their whitish breast, with a big fat brown spot in the middle." #sparrows #birding inaturalist.org/observations/2

Visual reminder that if you're going to use netting to protect your fruits and vegetables, design it so that birds don't get trapped. And check it daily because they will still get in. NB: this is not my garden; I freed the bird. #birds #sparrows #peas #garden #netting #allotment #vegetables
