Linux for the untrusting, nervous, worried, OCD, etc.
You do NOT need to format your computer HD/SSD to try it.

Get an SSD stick, 32GB is plenty big enough.
Download a Linux Image. (Mint is nice for first time users)
Burn it to the stick as ‘bootable’. (Step by step instructions via DuckDuckGo, GoogleSatan, etc. )
Plug it into a USB 3.x port on your PC.
Reboot and use YOUR Bios’ “Boot Menu” Key as it starts up. (Again, an easy search if you don’t know it)
Select the USB stick you just created.
20 seconds later, you are in Linux and NONE of your files are touched.
Easy peasy. 🥰

Am Mittwoch fand unsere #LinuxInstallParty im @acmelabs statt. Es gab wieder reges Interesse und viele Installationen. :tux: Danke dafür! :yayblob: Machen wir bald wieder!

#DualBoot-Installationen waren dieses Mal besonders beliebt. Da gibt es dann doch einiges zu beachten:

• ⚠️ Auf jeden Fall ein externes Backup der Daten auf der Windows-Partition anlegen!
• Verkleinerung der Windows-Partition direkt unter Windows (Datenträgerverwaltung) ist empfehlenswert).
• Unter Windows den Schnellstart / Fast startup deaktivieren.
• #SecureBoot kann bei manchen Gerätetreibern unter Linux Probleme machen. In der Regel empfehlen wir inzwischen Secure Boot nach Möglichkeit aktiv zu lassen bzw. wieder zu aktivieren.
• Windows-Systeme, die mit #Bitlocker verschlüsselt sind, müssen vorher entschlüsselt werden. Es kann anschließend wieder aktiviert werden.
• Wenn der Installer Linux nicht auf der Festplatte installieren will, sondern auf dem Ventoy-Stick, hilft es, einen normalen Bootstick mit nur 1 Linux drauf zu verwenden.

Mitte Oktober endet der Support für Windows 10. Dass Microsoft seine Kundschaft dazu auffordert, Millionen von funktionierenden Computern wegzuwerfen, ist ein gigantisches Umweltverbrechen.

Wenn Microsoft kein Windows 11 auf deinem Windows-10-Laptop laufen lassen will, dann nutze die Gelegenheit doch, mal Linux auszuprobieren!

Ich freue mich schon auf die Linux-Install-Party mit den @Datenpunks morgen (Mi.) in den @acmelabs in Bielefeld. 18 Uhr beginnen wir mit einem kurzen Vortrag für Ein- und Umsteiger:innen. Ihr könnt aber auch später hinzukommen. Bringt euer Gerät mit und macht vorher Backups von wichtigen Daten!

Nach dem Vortrag könnt ihr verschiedene Linux-Varianten direkt von USB-Sticks starten, die wir für euch vorbereitet haben. Die beiden Screenshots zeigen die aktuelle Auswahl. Zufällig sind Debian 13 und Linux Mint 22.2 gerade rechtzeitig erschienen. Wir haben solche Varianten dabei, mit denen wir vertraut sind und die auch für Anfänger:innen geeignet sind. Die meisten laufen problemlos auf bis zu 15 Jahre alter Hardware. Wir beraten euch bei der Auswahl.

Wer will, kann am Ende des Workshops einen solchen Stick mit ca. 60 Gigabytes GNU/Linux zum Einkaufspreis der Hardware (7€) mitnehmen, solange der Vorrat reicht. Verschicken werden wir die Sticks nicht.

@ceremus much cheaper solution is to write a USB. Boot stick and try out Linux without making breaking changes to your windows partition.

If you like it, install it alongside windows and dual boot what you feel like that day.

If you find that you havent used windows in months, go ahead and disable the boot menu entry. At that point you can always turn back still but you wont be bothered by the boot manager anymore.

Another reason to #trylinux. It is bad enough to be fed ads for Windows 11, but it is even worse to see them on a system you CAN'T upgrade because it is not supported.

Or you could install just the security update and skip the features one. And this time, that new AI garbabe copilot may be involved. And here I am.
