Angler catches rare shark in shallow waters off Swansea Beach

YouTuber, Alex Mcglynn, a biology graduate from the University of South Wales, co-runs popular angling channel The Hooky 2.

Alex shared footage of his rare catch of a 40lb tope shark from the beach, and its safe release again back into the sea, with his 2,000 subscribers – a video that has had over a quarter of a million views so far.

The YouTuber said the “remarkable and rare encounter” was an “unusual and unexpected catch for our area”.

The tope shark, also known as the school shark, is a slender, elegant shark species inhabiting the upper continental shelf down to 550m, and is known for its long migrations.

The shark has a grey upper body, white belly, two dorsal fins, and a distinctive notched tail. It can grow up to 6 feet long and primarily eats bony fish, but also consumes crustaceans and cephalopods.

There has never been any record of an unprovoked Tope attack on humans, so no need to fear this elegant shark.

The tope shark is currently listed as critically endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Alex said: “Tope sharks are not typically associated with inshore waters of South Wales, let alone caught directly from the beach.

“As someone with a background in marine biology, I’m aware that rising sea temperatures are starting to bring more unusual species into our coastal waters.

“This catch could be a sign of a growing presence of shark species in Welsh waters, something that has implications for local biodiversity, fisheries, and even public awareness of our changing seas.”

Tope sharks are vulnerable to overfishing due to their slow growth rate and relatively few offspring. Their flesh is sometimes used in “fish and chips” as a substitute for cod or haddock. In the past, tope sharks were targeted for their high vitamin A content in their liver.

Tope are protected in UK and EU waters, and if caught on rod and line must be returned to the sea alive.

With Drought on Tap for Montana Rivers and Streams, Top Fisheries Official Warns ‘It’s Going to Be A Rough One’

Stream gage data is already registering temperatures and flows that normally don’t bedevil Montana’s rivers and tributaries until mid-July, prompting state fisheries managers to issue early warning signals that anglers should anticipate restrictions and closures this summer.

I think one of the problems I am running into with trying to learn more about #fishing #angling online is that most of the information I am turning up has to do with #sportfishing, or treating it as a recreational pastime or sport, rather than as a means of subsistence. I’m looking for food, not fun. I know next to nothing about what happens after you “land” the fish, and I don’t know that I even know anyone who does who isn’t a right wing dirtbag.

_The Evening Post_, 1 April 1925:
A DANGEROUS BUSINESS
That good housekeeping rule as to a place for everything and everything in its place is particularly applicable to the ancient art and sport of kite flying, and in general it may be said that the place for kite flying—at the present time in tremendous vogue—is out of town, and especially well away from overhead electric power cables. This, mere annoyance to linesmen who are called upon to waste time, and energy in clearing lines is one sufficient reason for the unpopularity of the sport, but parents should remember, if youngsters will not, that kite flying near cables carrying 3000 to 11,000 volts may be extremely dangerous; under certain conditions the child might receive a very severe shock.
A definite warning as to the danger which follows interference with power lines is given by notices placed on the Hutt River pipe bridge, but there the warning is given to fishers, who may, so run the notices, receive a fatal shock should a wet line be thrown across the high[?] power lines across the river.

_The Evening Post_, 25 March 1925:
HEAVY CATCHES OF FISH
While the question of a regular and plentiful supply of fish is engaging attention of scientific and commercial men, #Wellington harbour as a fishing ground furnishes food for thought. On Tuesday last a party of three, fishing from a small boat, landed a catch weighing approximately 2 cwt. [ca. 100kg]. Last Saturday the same party, augmented by three additional fishermen, landed a great haul. The catch for the two days was 70 moki, 220 terakihi, and several fine schnapper [snapper], all caught on hand lines. The weight of the total catch was quite 5½ cwt. [280kg]. In the local market it would have realised a good round sum. The party distributed its catch to friends, after satisfying its own needs. Other amateur parties are also reporting large catches. These large hauls are being taken over the ground now being dredged. The buckets stirring up the bottom evidently release large supplies of feed, attracting moki, schnapper [snapper], and other fish. Usually good as the fishing in the harbour may now be, it is not generally so abundant as in former years.

@MrCopperpot

It depends a lot on what you are looking for and size and ages of your party - #peace and #quiet, #birdwatching, #angling, #pubs, #nightclubs?

Recommending places to #moor is difficult, particularly at the height of the season. If you want to eat at a pub/restaurant, most #riverside places will allow to to book a mooring, if they have any available, along with a table. If booking a mooring isn't available, then I'd arriving at the site between 15:00-16:00 even if you don't plan to eat till 20:00.

As for deciding where to visit, the #BroadsAuthority #Visitor page is at:
broads-authority.gov.uk/visiti
It includes a link to its own visitor magazine, "Broadcaster" at:

(Currently last year's issue. I think it will be updated before Easter.)

New #review today: "Well, as chance would have it, some tapes from the mid-80s turned up in #GeorgeCartwright’s basement, an almost forgotten band he played in briefly called #Angling. Of course, Cartwright was a founding member and saxophonist of #Curlew, at that time in between their first and second albums. Angling played two live gigs and one studio recording session, and that’s it, they were done and off to other projects." #ExposeOnline #AvantJazz #AvantRock expose.org/index.php/articles/

The brackish lagoons around the German island of #Rügen are known as outstanding fishing areas, especially for large #pike. However, catches and catch sizes have been declining for several years. A recent study by IGB and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin shows that there are fewer pike in areas with intensive recreational #angling than in protected areas. Another effect is that the pike are becoming increasingly difficult to hook and are thus becoming lure shy > igb-berlin.de/en/news/declinin
