Here, Logitech mice have lost basic functionality - like some of the buttons, you know, doing anything, or scrolling not working - because of an expired certificate for the app.

At any time, any particular app could stop working due to technological changes, vendor support, OS support, or any of a hundred other reasons, and if functionality depends on that app, you're high-and-dry. So the kitchen Display system that sends table orders to the kitchen display for prep is Android only. (Typically not an issue for farmers market, flea market transactions)

But I think the stripe scanners have been discontinued (not sure) and Square using iOS iPadOS can only do Apple Pay, or need a separate Bluetooth connected reader now.

私は先日のPebbleの公式Xアカウントの投稿で知ったのですが、公式サイトで今日の深夜0時に何かが発表されることが予告されていました。どうも時計ではなさそうな気はしていたのですが、発表されたのは「Index 01」というリング型のデバイスでした。

このリングには物理スイッチとマイク、Bluetooth通信機能とバッテリーが内蔵されていて、おもな機能は「スイッチを押している間に話したことがスマートフォンに記録される」ということのようです。ほかにもスイッチの押し方によって、例えばクリックでスマートフォンの音楽やポッドキャストの再生・停止、ダブルクリックでスキップ、クリック＋長押しではボイスアシスタントの起動などの機能を割り当てることができるとのことですが、それだけといえばそれだけの非常にシンプルなデバイスです。

「Index 01」という名前の通り、このリングはindex finger (人差し指)に付けることが想定されていて、そうすることで親指のちょっとした動作でボタンを押すことができるようです。私も最初は「スマホがあればそれで音声メモを取ればいいじゃないか」と思ったのですが、何かを思いついた瞬間に手を口元に持っていくだけで記録できるというのは確かに便利そうです。実際、ウォーキング中などにふと思いついたことがあって、しかしちゃんと記録しておかないせいで後ですっかり忘れてしまって思い出せないということはしばしばあります。そんな私にうってつけのデバイスなのでしょう。

なお、情報はすべてスマートフォン内で記録・処理されるということで、プライバシー、セキュリティには配慮されているそうです。また、専用アプリはオープンソースになるということで、ユーザーが自由に追加機能を開発できるようになり、またカスタマイズ手段も提供されるとのことです。

また、バッテリーは数年持つとのことですが、充電はできず、バッテリーが切れたら新しいものに交換ということになるようです。つまり使い捨てということになります。しかし、それによってシンプルで小型になっているのでしょうから、この手のデバイスを数年以上使い続けることはあまり多くないような気もするので、現実的で割り切ったデザインと言えるのではないでしょうか。価格はプリオーダーで75ドル、定価は99ドルとスマートリングとしては比較的安価とされていますが、リング自体の機能はだいぶシンプルなので妥当なところではないでしょうか。また、実質的にはバッテリーが切れるまでのサブスクリプション料金という見方もできそうです。

今プリオーダーすると3月発送になるとのことですが、私はこの製品を購入すべきでしょうか。最初は必要ないと思っていたのですが、いろいろ調べるうちによく考えられているような気がしてきて、ちょっと欲しくなってきてしまいました。ただ唯一気になるのは日本語に対応するのかどうかですね。これは非常に重要なポイントです。
