Globe thistle with a bit of a death star vibe. And a couple of bugs.

A globe thistle with prickly, evil-looking leaves topped by a cluster of spiky blue-green spheres, one of which has a cap of tiny white florets. A small copper and brown beetle with six legs, folded wings, and long curved antennae is poking around amid the florets. A fly-like insect sits on one of the leaves.

Two globular flowers, as yesterday, the larger one opening all the way from the top to the stem, the smaller still tightly in bud.

#SilentSunday

- save the humming of the bees.
I only found out a few nights ago that moths like these too, as I walked down the path and they all fluttered away before me.
I knew that the globes grow and then reach a point where they become irresistible to flies, and then their casing start to grow blue hair/flowers. which sees the flies ousted and the bees and wasps flock in.
But I never knew of their mothly magnetism.....

Here we have a small corner of a garden, with self sown echinops, that seem to come up every year.
They are curious looking plants, starting out as a mound of green leaves that soon grown spiky and from which emerge long stems. Then the round heads, or globes, from which they get their alternate name of globe thistle, burst open. This picture has a range of heads, some small and still grey, and some showing the blue starting to appear. The bees have found them already though.
They may not be the most beautiful, or the most colourful plants in the paintbox, but they have structure and the seed heads slowly go to brown as the year wears on.
You can cut them down, and keep the seeds, and sprinkle them in another place in your garden ...
Or you can go out around your area and fling them hither and yon, then smile secretly to yourself when they start to grow next year.
