@Hierarchy No, it's a [R36S](https://handhelds.wiki/R36S_Handheld_Wiki) from #Ali, bought for #ComputerFu teaching kids: It's a really fun #hackable #macgyver-able handheld that comes #foss out-of-the-box.

Solder in a 2€ chip and you got #wifi and #ssh.

And, of course, if it's still #hackable. The original #KRONOS (introduced in 2011) is basically an off-the-shelf Mini-ITX PC running #Linux with realtime extensions and an audio, MIDI and display interface attached via USB. #KORG used various techniques to make sure, that only their OS can run on the device, including file system hashes and a cryptographic handshake disguised as CD-ROM driver.

All this as been reverse engineered by a certain #kronoshacker who also found a way to root the device and install a custom kernel which in turn enabled him to replace the main board and install a more powerful CPU.

And yes: KORG is clearly violating the #GPL here.

I'm now the owner of a @trmnl, a 7.5'' e-ink display that you can hack. It has a ton of on the shelf plugins (https://usetrmnl.com/integrations), the doc is awesome (https://docs.usetrmnl.com) and everything is open source (https://github.com/usetrmnl)–including the firmware and the server–but one can just enjoy their hassle-free cloud and get started. Can't wait to play with it!

It requires hardware modifications to both the HestiaPi and the LCD, and a little Bash script, but it's possible to have the backlight turn completely off when not in use. Tapping the screen causes it to turn back on.

There's a writeup on the community forum which I will be including in the owner's manual.

#OpenHardware should be #hackable like this. I also plan on making this possible to do without hardware modification to the #HestiaPi on the next #hardware revision of the PCB. #OpenSource
