It’s been cold for so long that I forgot what it’s like to not have to wear layers just to step outside. So when the cold winter wind is biting at my ears, fingers and cheeks, I try to remember what it feels like to be at the beach with the hot sand between my toes, just being a wallflower, and observing people’s beach-day antics.

In this photo, a group of young men, who I believe were strangers to one another, came together in a contest of brawn and athleticism. Even with my brain foggy from mid-day drinking, this moment brought me back to memories of my childhood. And rather than seeing grown men trying to out jump one another in the sand, all I could see was each person’s inner child coming out for a playday at the beach.

Last weekend at the #southbavarian #trackandfield #championships, we had a #longjump pit with such modern technology, just like they use at the #olympics : A laser-beam to automatically detect invalid jumps and a video distance measurement system created by 🎉 me 🎉that delivered accurate measurement results just 5 seconds after the athlete has landed!

The total station on the yellow tripod is merely a backup in case the VDM fails for whatever reason. We never had to use it on this weekend except for the calibration of the VDM.

The video wall in the background is currently displaying the names of the athletes that are about to compete. During the competition, it will show the measured results in real time, just 5 to 10 seconds after the athlete has landed.

Me sitting at the VDM desk during the competition. In front of me, there's a live camera view and a tablet showing the current state of the competition. On the main screen, there's the measurement software ready to measure the next jump. As soon as I do the measurement, the result is transmitted in real-time back to the pit and shown on the video wall. This way, the athletes know the result just 5 to 10 seconds after they landed in the pit.

My partner and I watching triple jump:

M: This looks difficult. They have to start jumping when they reach the little block thing, but that means their last jump is really far away from the start of the sand pit. It eats up a lot of their jump. They should let them run and jump closer to the start of the sand pit. That way, their distance will be further.

P: (sigh)…again, that already exists. You’ve just invented the #LongJump. 🙄
