The Power of Slowing Down: Reclaiming Peace

Slowing down has been more challenging than I expected. The last six months have been hectic and chaotic, filled with numerous responsibilities and unexpected events that constantly pulled my attention in different directions. My morning meditation practice, which once brought me clarity and peace, vanished amid the chaos, leaving me more stressed than ever. As a result, my sleep has been anything but restful; I find myself tossing and turning at night, unable to sleep. A shift is required; a shift of energy and direction, a move towards deliberate action and planning (of which I am not a fan).

Embracing Spontaneity

I’m not a planner. When I participated in NaNoWriMo, I was considered a “pantster,” as in fly by the seat of my pants, rather than a planner. This spontaneous approach carries over into the rest of my life, influencing my decisions and interactions with the world. Early on, I discovered that planning was not a way to control life or outcomes; instead, it often led to disappointment when things didn’t go as anticipated. As they say, “The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.” This sentiment resonates with me deeply, especially in a world that is constantly changing and evolving.

Plans undoubtedly have their place, offering structure and direction; however, it’s crucial to recognize that unexpected events can and do arise, necessitating flexibility and adaptability. Embracing this fluidity allows me to navigate life with a sense of curiosity and openness, ready to embrace the adventures that unfold, rather than being bound by rigid expectations. In essence, it’s about finding a balance—appreciating the value of planning while also celebrating the unforeseen twists and turns that make life rich and interesting.

To find balance, a slower pace of life is required. Slowing down allows for deeper awareness of the current moment, naturally allowing expectations to fall away and making room for presence to arise. Finding this slower pace takes some planning, some discernment to ensure my needs and my family’s needs are met.

Preparing for POSSIBILITY

Now, however, I am at a place where planning certain aspects of my family’s week would be advantageous. This involves creating a framework that allows us all to adapt to the unexpected. In doing so, it is essential to cultivate a mindset that embraces flexibility and openness to possibilities. Life can present us with surprises, and rather than fighting against these twists and turns, we should view them as opportunities for growth and learning. By preparing ourselves for a range of outcomes, we foster a family environment that thrives on resilience and creativity, ensuring that we can navigate whatever challenges may come our way while still enjoying moments of joy and connection together.

Small Shifts

So easy to write about, yet putting these concepts into practice during times of upheaval is challenging. So here I am, starting small by adding back my morning meditation practice, as I believe in building consistency before making any other significant shifts in my life. This one small shift not only allows me to set the pace of my day (slowing down) but also brings mindfulness to the forefront of my awareness. I find that by dedicating those early moments to quiet reflection, I am better equipped to face the chaos that may arise later. Each meditation session acts as a gentle reminder to stay grounded, helping me cultivate a sense of peace that reverberates throughout my day.

Nurturing Slowness

As I continue to nurture this practice, I hope to gradually expand my efforts, inviting more positive habits into my routine and reinforcing a deeper commitment to my overall well-being. This journey of self-improvement, although modest in its beginnings, holds the promise of lasting change and a harmonious approach to the challenges life may present.

Reflection

I hope wherever you are in your journey, you have a small practice that can offer you comfort and guidance in times of difficulty, something that helps ground you and bring clarity amidst the chaos. Whether it’s a moment of quiet reflection, a daily ritual, or an activity that sparks joy, having this small refuge can make a significant difference. It can serve as a reminder that even in the toughest moments, there are ways to reconnect with your inner strength and resilience, allowing you to navigate through challenges with more grace and determination.

A Haunt of Nostalgia

Before I begin, I need to give my thanks to Stephen King for the train of thought that arose while reading It recently for the second time. He describes the town of Derry as a haunt, listing the different definitions of the word haunt, one of which is a place where animals feed.

The past haunts.

Memories ache. Simple ones like thinking of a Currier and Ives print being reminiscent of childhood, where you could open the door in your imagination and step through into the delight of the winterscape print with scenes of snow, dogs, kids, magic, and wonder. Most of all, the feeling that this could last forever—this delightful joy of living in the moment, no worries about tomorrow, only unending wonder at what magic would happen next, that feeling of lightness in the chest, a sense of freedom, oneness with the world. Oh, how memories ache; how memories haunt.

They are the places I go to feed.

I think it’s just something that naturally happens in middle age – certain locked-away memories of childhood begin to resurface, murky at first in the turbid waters of my mind. As I go about my daily routine, whether reading, working, shopping, or engaging in whatever random activity that occupies my time, a little ripple begins to stir within me, driven by the plop of some stone that has come loose from the bank of the river of memory. It’s as if fragments of my past, long buried beneath the sediment of routine life, are calling out for recognition. I make a brief note of the sensation, the subtle tug at my consciousness, but it’s not until it gathers momentum that it transforms into a veritable landslide of recollection. Suddenly, I find myself fully immersed in the clearwaters of my youth, where vivid images and sounds from the past wash over me. I can hear the laughter of friends, the sweetness of sun-drenched afternoons, and the innocence of my younger self.

But we all forget, don’t we? How many adults fully remember their childhood—the freedom, the awareness, the wonder? Maybe we’re supposed to forget, tucked away in the folds of time. How could we possibly attend to the responsibilities of adulthood if we still behave like kids, losing ourselves in daydreams and fantastical play? Ha! Perhaps it would be easier if we had a better sense of wonder, of magic, of imagination—more in touch with the possibility that surrounds us every day.

That’s really it, isn’t it?

Possibility.

As children, possibilities are all around us; we’re open to them regardless of fear, eagerly chasing after shadows and constructing worlds of our own design. We believe everything and anything is possible, from flying to far-off lands to befriending talking animals. But adulthood—what is possible then? Magic? Miracles? Absolutely not, that’s fiction, relegated to storybooks and childhood fantasies. Or is it? It seems in childhood, magic is a fact, a palpable force that colors our experiences with vibrancy. Maybe the magic is real, and the adults who have forgotten (the faces of their fathers. Thankee sai, Stephen King) can still touch that magic; all it takes is perhaps a fleeting moment of nostalgia or a familiar scent wafting through the air.

Because I remember the smells, the air, the texture, the freshness of spring in the Adirondacks, where every breeze carries whispers of possibility. It isn’t just a memory but a place I can still step into, still walk about, touching 1987 like it was yesterday. These are the places I haunt, where echoes of laughter linger and where my imagination took flight. These are the places I go to feed, rejuvenating my spirit and reminding me that though the years may stack upon me like leaves in autumn, the essence of childhood and its endless possibilities are always within reach.

The Impossible Is Impossible Until You Make It Possible

There is a strange comfort in the word impossible. It carries finality. It feels authoritative, almost scientific, as if reality itself has spoken and rendered a verdict. When something is declared impossible, the mind is invited to rest, to stop pushing, to stop imagining alternatives. Impossible becomes a boundary marker, a line drawn around what we are allowed to want, try, or believe in. Yet history, personal experience, and even quiet inner growth repeatedly expose the lie hidden inside […]

"Refuse to participate in the fear... choose to participate in the future." - Futurist Jim Carroll

I don't know about you, but if you are like me, you probably have a disquieting sense of unease about 2026.

Things aren't so great out there, are they?

It would seem that as insanity settles in, the quiet tragedy that is dementia is screaming out its impact at full throttle. Anyone who has seen a senior in this situation recognizes the signs of decline and knows how it goes. Not well.

The result is that all over the world, people are anxious, disturbed, worried, and fearful.

I was reading a post by Dolly Parton of all people yesterday - she recently arrived on Substack. Aside from being a brilliant musical artist, she's a philanthropist with stunning business insight. This line in her post drew my attention:

"My desire to do a thing is always greater than my fear of it."

That made me think! And then I looked up the essence of the quote, and variations of it show it to be a very common motivational phrase.

That being the case, I turned it around in my mind until I found a version that fits the trying times we find ourselves in today.

Here's the thing: it's an odd time to be thinking about the future when an entire nation seems eager to tear it down.

It's hard to focus on tomorrow when today is simply so weird.

It's tough to align with what's next when what is current is truly terrifying.

And yet, it's one of the most important ways to get through this moment of madness.

May your hope for tomorrow outweigh your fear of where we are right now.

Welcome to 2026.

If Jim Carroll had to pick one word to describe 2026 so far, it would be 'weird.' Or, terrifying. Take your pick.
