Catkins on a Salix gracilistyla Mount Aso. The catkins are produced in spring before the leaves.
I moved this shrub a couple of years ago from an area, where it was not doing well. It is meant to grow up to three metres tall but is still tiny, probably on account of its hard start in life.

A #willow (s)weeping in the #wind for #ThickTrunkTuesday

(... Ok, it's most likely not a weeping willow but maybe a #Salix fragilis)

#Weide #BruchWeide #tree #trees #Baum #Bäume #longExposure #Langzeitbelichtung #Biederitz
A long-exposure photograph of a tree in a woodland, captured from a low angle. The tree’s sturdy, twisting trunk rises prominently, its bark textured and weathered. The surrounding twigs and leaves appear artistically blurred by the wind, creating a dreamy, dynamic effect. A large, fallen branch rests in the foreground, while the background features a mix of green and golden foliage, suggesting the transition between seasons. The image conveys the serene yet lively atmosphere of a forest in motion.

I only use this machine about once/twice a week to pull up plans or instructional videos, but that's still impressive uptime!

Picture of an older Getac "hardened" laptop running Salix. A terminal window is open and shows multiple instances of the uptime command (which shows how long the computer has been running). The latest line shows 323 days of uptime.

Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. An open raceme of pendant flowers on long pedicels, with small white petals. I think these are male flowers - you can't quite make it out at this resolution but the stamens are fully developed and pollen-bearing. We're looking at the flowers from the side.Oemleria cerasiformis, osoberry. Looking up into a group of flowers from below. I think these are female - vestigal stamens without pollen, and visible ovaries. Grey sky in the backgorund.Ribes sanguineum, red-flowered currant. A raceme of flowers handging from a twig. At the base of the raceme, three leaves, sort of five-lobed cordate with deep creasing. The flower cluster is opening from the top down; four flowers are open and there are many more buds waiting. The sepals are pink and open wide, looking like petals, and the much smaller white petals remain in a tube-like shape sheltering the stamens & pistil.Salix, willow. Against a completely blurred out light grey background, a twig with four flowering staminate (pollen-producing) catkins. On each catkin, the unopened pollinia are bright orange, and the open ones are bright yellow with pollen; the rest of the structure is a pale green that contrasts pleasingly with the orange. When the garden was planted ca 1984, several species of willow were included, so this volunteer tree might be a cross of two of those trees.

#ArtAdventCalendar day 23: my weeping willow and salicylate cyanotype!

Willow has been used used for medicinal purposes for 1000s of years; cures using willow appear in the writings of various ancient Greek scholars & infusions of willow bark were used traditionally by Cherokee & other Indigenous peoples of NA for fever & other medicinal purposes.

Beware of willows, they will capture you.
