It's completely normal to spot a dead shieldbug when refuelling your car and scrape it off the tarmac and pop it on the back seat so you can ID it when you get home, right? In this case, mottled shieldbug Rhaphigaster nebulosa, which I think is a new "tick" for me (to use birder terminology) - wanted to see one so I had a reference point to compare with brown marmorated stinkbug. So now I have a serendipitous, albeit rather mangled, specimen.

A shieldbug (insect, wide at the front with a small head, tapering gently to a slightly pointed tip at the back, flat-ish), with mottled creamy-yellow and dark markings. It is very dead and rather mangled, and is pinned badly through the right wing.

This Hawthorn shieldbug was so freshly emerged from its final instar as a nymph that when I first found it, it still had the skin sitting on its head. That sadly blew off, but you can't get a better look at the new colours of the wings and back than this
