UCLA: National shade map from UCLA and American Forests launched to combat deadly urban heat. “The Shade Map, now available through American Forests’ Tree Equity Score platform, shows where shade exists — and where it doesn’t — in 101 of the largest urbanized areas in the country, covering more than 360 cities and towns. It visualizes how shade from trees and buildings changes […]

This should really be the norm. Chipping has its place in the timber industry (though that should be confined to plantation timber) however, there needs to be repurposing otherwise. This is a good story. There should be more like them.

"...North American cities today are in big trouble financially. The money they spend has to stretch as far as possible, and the multipurpose nature of trees fits that bill. In addition to the benefits I’ve mentioned here, plentiful research has found that street trees have a positive effect on traffic calming, boost spending in retail areas, and encourage walking and biking.

If you'd like to see more street trees in your town or city, lead with economic arguments and examples of the practical, easy-to-grasp infrastructure benefits that urban trees deliver.

Larger American cities with the most street trees

Source: earth.com

The following list identifies cities across the United States with populations exceeding 100,000 residents that have the most street trees. Fully one-third of all the cities listed are located in California, exemplifying the important of street trees to Californians.

Cities that have not been included meet one or more of the following:

  • They do not meet the minimum number of 10,000 street trees.
  • They do not publish the number of street trees in their community online.
  • They do not separate out their number of street trees from other publicly owned trees.
  • They do not have a street tree program.
Source: caryinstitute.org

Whenever possible, both publicly and privately owned street trees are included in these numbers. Many of the tallies provided are estimates that are rounded off by the local community. More exact numbers reveal cities where a street tree census has taken place. In those instances where an approximate range was provided online, this post utilized the midpoint of that range.

Given the importance of trees generally, and street trees specifically, in helping cool cities, as well as improved stormwater absorption, wildlife habitat, scenic beauty, and increased property values, most cities should be escalating their street tree and public tree planting efforts. The cost-benefit comparisons of trees are clearly in favor of their strong benefit to the community.

As additional information becomes available, the list will be updated accordingly.

Peace!

My fave #BigTree yesterday, was this large #HorseChestnut #tree on a side road beside Wark Street Commons Community Park in #VictoriaBC in #QuadraVillage.

In Britain & Ireland, their seeds are used for the popular children's game conkers. During WWI there was a campaign asking everyone to collect the seeds & donate to the government. The #conkers were used as a source of #starch for #fermentation using the Clostridium acetobutylicum method devised by Chaim Weizmann to produce #acetone for use as a solvent for the production of #cordite, which was then used in #MilitaryArmaments. Weizmann's process could use any source of starch, but the government chose to ask for conkers to avoid causing starvation by depleting food sources. But conkers were found to be a poor source & the factory only produced acetone for 3 months; however, they were collected again in WWII for the same reason.

on a spree in , as i spotted around 20 marked trees in a single run. This reminds me to chase my FOI about monitoring & survival rate (UK average is 30% die in the first 12 months). It seems there’s zero policy in a city () where most trees were planted in the 19th century. Anyone has a policy/blueprint to share to encourage local authorities to do better?

Sign plastered on a tree trunk saying “Lambeth Council- Unfortunately it has become necessary to remove this tree due to Dead/Dying”
