Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix
You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.
It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.
P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).
Fair enough. #Screenshot attached. #Fluxbox with #emacs split paned and a few grouped windows. (Why don't other WM / DEs have this?)
Need to download and compile at least wmglobe.
Would love to redo the dock apps to be 128 px instead of 64. Of course, back in the day, 64 was almost too big.
Also, got my across-the-top conky reworked to be on the far left.
Now that the important stuff is taken care of, I should prolly do some work.
@chris_spackman man, you can’t just write about it and not provide any screenshot(s) 😄 I only used #WindowMaker briefly, but the older I got the more fond I am of its look 😅
nice thing about an ultra-wide monitor - putting back all the #WindowMaker #DockApps that I couldn't justify using the space for on the previous, regular monitor.
I'll probably spend some time this summer tracking down and compiling (or attempting to get to compile) some of the ones that are no longer in #Gentoo repos.
I've got #wmCalClock #wmMatrix #wmMoon #wmSun and a couple of others beautifying and info-fying my desktop already.
1440 / 64 = 22(-ish), so room for more

I'm trying out #windowmaker on my Debian box and i love it!
Make Computers Fast Again
Finally #GNUstep is installed and #WindowMaker running.
For builders of the wmlive ISO, source update wmlive-bookworm-12.9.1.tar.xz was uploaded to sourceforge. * backport kernel version 6.12.9 for amd64 ISO * added throttled-0.11.tar.xz into build tree * bug fixes for wmlive-base and wmlive-installer #wmlive #gnustep #wmaker #windowmaker #debian
For those building the wmlive ISO images themselves, build sources wmlive-bookworm-12.9.1.tar.xz was uploaded to sourceforge. Notable changes:
* Switch to backport kernel version 6.12.9 for amd64 ISO.
* Add build-config/wmlive-opt/*/throttled-0.11.tar.xz into build tree.
Additionally, included helper packages wmlive-base and wmlive-installer have some bugs fixed.

Nice! I haven't seen someone using #WindowMaker in a long time. <3
NextStep: The Visionary OS, Steve Jobs’s Apple Exodus, and the GNUstep Legacy

Also talking of #WindowMaker found a project that intends to recreate it for #Wayland. Any takers doing the same for #CDE aka #CommonDesktopEnvironment I like sharp pixel corners.
I love messing with alternate operating systems and have to admit modern #FreeBSD is a lot fun, also #WindowMaker for that nostalgic touch, still no bloody idea why #Xonotic is segfaulting since a few updates though, everything else 3D runs like a champ.
WindowMaker is still going strong. I love it on my really old hardware or in a VM
