Kinda frustrated with the state of #desktops in #Linux / #BSD / #Unix

You can either have a fully functional, but kind of frustrating-to-use (too mouse-centric) desktop with Gnome or KDE Plasma, or you can have a lean, efficient, and fast wm/compositor like #i3, #sway #awesomewm #evilwm, #cwm, #bspwm, or whatever you like, BUT you will constantly be scratching your head when #Gnome and #GTK programs either start very slowly or refuse to run at all, and are constantly trying to figure out what combination of configuration, daemon, and small animal sacrifices are necessary to do what the big, bloated desktops do automatically.

It's freaking exhausting, and I want to go back to the days that every one just ran #IceWM, #Enlightenment, or #WindowMaker.

P.S., Just for clarity, I really do love #KDE #Plasma. I think it's a wonderful, easy-to-use, and extremely flexible desktop. But sometimes I really don't want a desktop, I just want a lean-and-basic UI that stays out of my way (for home stuff vs. work stuff, generally).

Both #Windows amd #macOS are #proprietary. #linux may require a little investment in time and effort but rewards you with almost total flexibility. I.e. do you want ancient #win95 like interface? Use #icewm instead of #gnome or #kde.

Alle haben ihre Berechtigung - je mehr gute es gibt desto größer die Chance dass die Leute was finden dass so gut zu ihnen passt dass sie umsteigen und gerne bleiben.

Aber um Umsteiger zu motivieren ist #IceWM natürlich der worst-case...🙈

@toot @itsfoss Absolutely agree. 💯 #IceWM is the only one that being extremely lightweight also has system monitors (network, RAM, CPU) implemented by default at sight all the time in the taskbar. For some reason, that tool has become hard to find. It's really a perfect WM for the minimalist ones. ❤️

Rewatching the old Jessica Alba show Dark Angel and apparently #IceWM is the desktop of choice in the dystopian future.

i don't know what they are or where they came from, but i like them! I used to enjoy #IceWM. these aren't that bare-bones; are better IMO. But I never leanred to truly customize IceWM because i'm a lazy piece of shit fkkr. i digress.

So yeah. figure this shit out. have a cup of coffee. try the #i3 and #SwayFX #i3blocks and #Hyprland - of the three of those type, whever they are from what planet i do not know, but-- of those three, #Hyprland might come from the sagebrush by way of #CharlieHall

I’m back at it again. On the Mango Pi Quad I reinstalled #Debian (Bullseye) server.

So far I have installed #Xorg and #IceWM. I also #JWM but had issues.

IceWM seems to be working fine and snappy. Now I am moving the repos over to #Bookworm.

I don't get why this guy is down on #synapse for a #Linux #applicationlauncher

Since discovering the app launchers on Linux, i'm all about it as a go-to.

E.g. when I was at my g/f place a year ago I used #icewm because of it's tiny footprint. add Synapse on top of that (as #Ulauncher doesn't work correctly on #Wayland in my experience, but i prefer #ulauncher )

i mean, just the "search" on the start menu is decent. but you're not going ot have that, e.g. #IceWM #Fluxbox #openbox etc.

#IceWM has a newer version, hopefully #AntiX will update their packages. #MutterMuffin has a new release as of 2 days ago to be updated in #NixOS and #LinuxMint. #XFCE has not had a new release in 2 years and is used in #KaliLinux, #LinuxLite (lol), and #MXLinux. Looking forward to the updates in the soon to be release #AlpineLinux to get the next benchmark-a-thon cycle going. :)
