The calm before the storm feels extra loud up here in #Appalachia. ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

The sky is clear, the stars are sharp, and the air has that hushed winter stillness that is so loud. Extremely loud. IYKYK. The yard tells a different story. Tonight the machines are parked like they are sleeping, fresh tracks in the dirt, and fresh straw laid down to try to prevent massive run off.

I have no clue when the landscaper is coming to pick up his equipment. It's been over a week since it's been parked and with the ice #storm coming, doubt he gets it anytime soon. Weird trust.

Weโ€™re trying to stay one step ahead of the aftermath of an epic one-in-a-lifetime ice storm (melting, lots of melting) by grading, moving, fixing, prepping because once the ice melts everything changes. Right now itโ€™s peacefulโ€ฆ but you can almost feel the storm gathering in the distance. I know it's headed our way but, dang, it's eerie tonight.

The quiet moments between the chaos.
The kind where I pause, look up, and remember that I chose this #mountain life. ๐Ÿ–ค๐ŸŒฒ

A nighttime outdoor scene in Appalachia. The sky is dark and full of scattered stars. Tall leafless trees rise up on the right side, glowing with warm yellow light from a nearby street lamp. In the lower right foreground, two pieces of heavy yard equipment, one small excavator and another machine, are parked on freshly disturbed ground. The dirt shows deep tire tracks and uneven grading. The overall scene feels quiet and still, like a pause in the work before bad weather arrives.

Break time from gardening work. Making a little progress in the side shrub/flower bed along the east side of my yard. Y'know, I don't think battery operated weed eaters/string trimmers were born to tackle grasses that're five feet tall, but after not being mobile enough to trim all summer that's what I'm asking mine to do. ๐Ÿ˜… It'll never stop amazing me how fast things you *don't* want to grow can shoot up.

Earlier today: Me taking the air compressor on it's annual stroll from the garage to the back patio. We're going to blow out the sprinklers.

Peaceful Sunday of Chainsaws and Tree Dropping

Spent the morning dropping two Olive Trees and transporting all the branches to the alley. My bro was a superstar w the chainsaws.

Sure! You'll get out of doing yardwork, but there ARE environmental friendly reasons NOT to rake, blow or mow fallen Autumn leaves ~ even doing a Modified version of this, supports the normal balance of your lawn/garden's ecosystem

I was *so close* to being done poking holes in the lawn with the weasel I borrowed from Dad... and then my new neighbour, supervising the movers unloading his truck, offered me the use of his thatching rake.

What I wanted to say was "oh gosh thank you so much but I am already tired." What I *did* was dethatch the yard, because I felt like it would be rude to do anything else. Then I put seed on it, and now it's being watered.

I have earned this beer.

the good news is yesterday i got half of our giant hedge trimmed before the battery died on the trimmer (seems to be a theme)

the bad news is, just before the battery died, my back tweaked.

I took some relaxants and it was ok last night, but this morning the muscles are very guarded. Full up on Tylenol back pain and Advil.

Shoveled and hauled another 30 buckets of gravel today, half to the driveway and half to the remaining assembled raised bed (which I also had to dig a good sized trench for since the ground was uneven). I am le tired.

Still have to assemble 2 more 4x8 raised beds to replace 2 existing beds, dig and lay gravel bases for them, tighten the 460 screws for the 6 beds, and eventually fill with them all with soil. Oof.

Gardening the driveway, part three:
Today I went down to the lower level and took out weed mats with 1.5โ€ of dirt attached. That will be good for the compost pile to have some soil in there, though forking the whole thing over makes my back ache in anticipated workload. Still, much progress โ€” another 20 gallons of weed-and-dirt today.

Yard work over due

Started at 0630 with the front lawn that hadn't been mown in three weeks. Mostly went well, but my Hart equipment needs new batteries, could've sworn I had four, but could only account for three, one of which broke, and the remaining two seem to have drained way to fast. While waiting for them to charge, I started on project two, finally reining in the south side where things have been growing like weeds. Not sure if most of it was goldenrod, or the Missouri equivalent of bamboo, but I went to work cutting each piece down with pruners and piling it in the back against the fence.

At one point I took a break, ordering MickeyD's delivered, which is stupidly expensive. After eating, I got back to work, finishing the pruning before returning to the front to finish that. After that, we went to work using a trimmer to cut the grass in the same area because there was no way the mower would get it done. In the end, the room mate joined in, since his equipment is better than mine, and everything along that side was cut.

Yep, no before pic, but there's the after, not real impressive looking, but at least its no longer an eyesore.

That said, I do think I overdid it, from neck pain to unquenchable thirst, as well as the coffee I had with my breakfast, I went through four 12oz Gatorades while I was working. Since I came in, I've had another coffee, and cup after cup, after cup of water which doesn't come back out. My neck is also sore, and I'm fairly certain I'm a bit sun burned.

Ugh, no grocery shopping or laundry today, those can wait until tomorrow, though I will do the mileage log and finish proofreading a story I've been working on, along with my regular night's web surfing... Well, extended version since I didn't surf this morn. Once I get that all done, it'll prolly be bedtime.

Tomorrow I'll have to start scanning documents to share with my financial manager related to Vik's passing, we need to get a plan in place so I can start taking care of the big financial decisions, and winding down his estate. I did accidentally kick over a hornet's nest yesterday, hopefully the bank doesn't repo his car now that they know he's dead, I'd rather like to keep it, even though ownership transfer will be challenging, but them taking it is not that big of a deal. And I do really need to get back to the comics, prepping that for sale, and that's the really big project. I do have someone brokering the sale of his fountain pens, and that's going well.

In case it might help somebody else, I managed to fix my EGO weed trimmer today. The automatic feed button wasn't sucking in the line, so I used a 1/2 socket to pop off the housing and found a piece of string and some dried stems clogging the gears. Once cleaned the auto-feed worked better than ever and the trimmer had much more power. #ego #yardwork #repair #fix #fixit #diy #tools #weeding #battery #lawncare

Yesterday, I mowed the lawn, filled a hole that I've been ignoring for a decade, and put down some new grass seed. I should really put down even more grass seed.

Started some #yardwork this afternoon, but donโ€™t worry, my #T1D BG dropped 69 mg/dL in 10 min, 86 in 15, so that was short lived.

Oh and I threw my phone across the yard. Itโ€™s fine. Everything is fine.
