Had a funny/weird dream just before I woke up. Had just gotten off an elevator, & caught glimpse of a gal & guy conversing 15’ away. I thought, “She’s deaf, & just asked him ‘WTF?!’… She definitely has her WTF expression on.”

Woke up with a smirk over the fascinating expressiveness of #ASL that’s often absent in spoken English.

My twilight mind gives me some weird thoughts.

Big Freedia was amazing and joyful. Totally tore it up. And if you look to the left of the second of these photos, you’ll see that the #ASL interpreters were off the hook as well. Crowd was LARGE and very diverse and the synergy with #NoKings seemed cool to me. Awful weather, but a very affirming, positive day. #Pride #BostonPrideForThePeople

oh shit!!! i was wrong! i did some reading and i can still learn #asl with only one hand!!! its sonething i have always wanted to learn snd now i can start slowly digging in!

When I was taking #asl classes in high school, I was taught that you were not allowed to create your own sign name -- that it had to be given to you by a #Deaf person. At the time, I didn't really question it. But since then, I've spent a lot of time learning from #trans people and being part of the #nonbinary community, and from those experiences, I've learned to place a very high value on being able to decide for yourself how people refer to you -- especially names. That has made the situation with sign names a sticking point for me.

I haven't had any involvement in the Deaf community. I had recently wondered if attitudes toward sign names had changed now that the world as a whole is more cognizant of trans and nonbinary experiences, but I watched the Furality panel on #signlanguage in VR today, and it seems like the stance is the same as when I was in high school. It feels hostile in a way, especially to trans and NB people.

I think right now I really need people to tell me things

Someone in the Zine Crisis discord (a nice discord for people who make zines) made this video to teach ASL signs related to zines, for people who'll be tabling or attending zine fests and want to be able to talk to Deaf/ASL signers about zines.
