Usually I don't like these chirpy rapey bastards but this one was standing quietly for the moment. Fairly good colour contrast and I managed to get a few snaps off.

Submitted for the iNaturalist Southern Hemisphere Bio Blitz, even though I'm (sadly) pushing Tiu all the way up the species leaderboard.

Yes, it's the annual *Great Southern Bioblitz*, and it starts today and runs for 4 days.

All iNaturalist observations made between 24–27 October in participating regions and countries automatically get added to the Great Southern Bioblitz project. That includes all of New Zealand's regions.

Last year, 9,322 people found 27,015 species. Let's see what we can all find in 2025.

Closeup of a bee on a light purple flower. Bombus vagans is a common species of bumblebee with a medium-length tongue. The head, thorax and first two segments of the abdomen are yellow while the rest of the abdomen is black. The face has a mixture of yellow and black hairs and the thorax is densely clad in shaggy yellow hair except for a smooth central portion which is bare and shiny. The first two abdominal segments bear yellow hairs and the remainder of the abdomen is clad in black hairs. The underside of this bee and the legs are black. Similar species with which it can be confused include Bombus sandersoni (which is slightly smaller), Bombus perplexus, Bombus impatiens and Bombus affinis.

Around 1,300 Leideners found 2,265 species during the Expeditie Stadsnutuur urban biodiversity inventory. ‘It’s been a huge success’, says scientific coordinator Frederic Lens.
