I saw this tapir on the riverbank. He started feeding, unaware of my presence. An incredible sighting; the animal never detected me, allowing me to observe him in his natural environment with completely undisturbed behavior.

A quick morning snack for a starling.

Just a few days ago, I went for a small hike south of the Loonse & Drunense Duinen — a less-traveled area where nature still follows its own rhythm. Unlike busy forests that fall quiet when people arrive, here everything just… continues. That’s where I found this starling, perched high in a tree painted with the warm reds and golds of autumn, against a bright blue sky.

I grabbed my Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400mm, testing different compositions — and reminding myself (too late) to use my polariser for that extra sky contrast! Back home, this image stood out. The balance of colour was striking — the starling’s dark, iridescent feathers shimmering with hints of green and purple against that vivid backdrop. But what really made the shot special was the small detail: the moment the bird snatched a passing insect midair.

Starlings are quick and clever hunters; their eyes are adapted to detect the smallest movements even in bright light. No wonder they thrive in both cities and wildlands alike. To me, this photo captures that blend of elegance and instinct — nature’s little drama, frozen in a fraction of a second.

Wings Over Water — Zoutelande’s Coastal Birdlife

What do you see when you’re at the sea? Some see waves and endless sky. I see movement, feathers, and stories. At Zoutelande, seabirds are more than background scenery — they are coastal sentinels, perfectly adapted to a life between land and sea.

I photographed a mix of species: adult gulls perched on wave breakers, keeping a watchful eye on the tide, and a juvenile Larus cachinnans (Pontische Meeuw or Caspian Gull) resting quietly on a boardwalk, still growing into its adult plumage. These gulls are skilled opportunists — coastal recyclers playing a vital role in the ecosystem.

Among them, a special guest: Haematopus longirostris, the Australian Pied Oystercatcher. A striking species with a powerful bill and strong personality, often mistaken for a local — but likely a rare visitor or misidentification (since they don't normally appear in Europe). Either way, a reminder of the magic of migration and the surprises nature offers.

Shot with my Canon 5D Mark III and the Sigma 100–400mm lens, these images capture the texture of the coast: salt on the wind, waves on the shore, and wings in the sky.

Where there are birds, there is life — and always something worth protecting.

Spending time with these New Zealand fur seal pups is one of the greatest joys for me.
Curious, playful, and full of personality—each one is a reminder of what we’re protecting.

Sharing a sunrise with a wild soul like this… it’s good for the heart. 🤎 🧡

Lately I’ve been documenting the devastating toll starvation is taking on our seals — but today, I just want to share this little piece of calm.

A wet New Zealand fur seal pup sits beside rocky coastal terrain, bathed in warm golden light from the rising sun. Its face is softly illuminated, gazing toward the light with a calm, reflective expression. The background is a soft blur of sunlit ocean, glowing in hues of orange and gold.
A Kea comes into land on a snow-covered tree in Arthur’s Pass National Park. Native to us here in New Zealand’s South Island, Kea are the world’s only alpine parrot—clever, curious, and full of mischief.

Nestled on a rock beside a waterfall, this New Zealand fur seal pup rests quietly, waiting for its mother to return from the sea. These pups can be left alone for days while their mothers forage — a vulnerable yet natural part of their early life.

There’s something incredibly peaceful about this moment — a glimpse of calm in the wild.

Like so many others I am watching the current political situation unfold in dismay. I knew that Western society was in decline but I did not expect it to decay so rapidly. Fascism is expanding exponentially and as a result democracy is in peril. Something wicked this way comes.

At the heart of conservation is compassion and empathy for existence beyond our own. That philosophy is the path of longterm existence for life and the antipathy is the destruction not only of the natural world but of humanity.

Personal, political, and religious ambitions have divided society for far too long. Those who seek power and control have impoverished and decimated the vulnerable and indefensible. And yet there is hope.

As we stand at the precipice we must either accept our fate or gain resolve to push back against the rising tide of oppression. While democracy and the institutions that support it still hold we must use all civil means to represent our will, and heavily at that. Stand forward now or be prepared for what comes.

Portrait of a survivor. This magnificent Amur leopard carries the weight of her species' future on her shoulders.
Sleeping beauty, or a symbol of a species on the brink? This Amur leopard's serene pose belies the harsh reality – fewer than 100 remain in the wild. We must act now to protect their habitat and end poaching if we're to ensure their survival.
