After years of thinking about it, I decided I developed enough #drawing skills to create a picture of "my private #goddess". In 2011 I called her A.A.N.S, few years later, after I heard her name in dream, I also called her Fe'i. And many other names... Bottomless Pit, Queen Of Certainty (or Certainty Free Of Doubt), Queen Of Butterfly Effect, Always Hungry Lady, Never Satisfied Goddess, Lady Of Eternal Desire...

There were more of that and I have problem with translating these to English :blobcatsweat:

In first version of my private mythology she was simply "mother and lover of thunders", #deity of earth (as in grounded things, not nature), kind of entity waiting underground, in "potential well", for lightning to strike, to feed on light and energy. Later I saw her as force behind long series of events in my life (so connected with butterfly effect). And now, because I called her Certainty Free Of Doubt, I sometimes identify her also as goddess of cryptography, or maybe kind of syncretic deity... well, deity of cryptography would be shapeshifting and with many faces and forms anyway... something like Wael from Pillars of Eternity :blobcatjoy:

Drawing of a woman wearing old-school dress, with loose white sleeves and brown corset. Her outfit is decorated with leaves on her waist and shoulders. She has long brown hair, loose in back part and two small braids on both sides. Her crown is made of black horns or spikes. The woman is carrying gray metal ball in right hand and release lightning from left hand. She is surrounded by light beams, seemingly flowing from her head. In the background are blurry dark trees.

After long time I have new #drawing with "Deity of Cryptography". I wanted to do it close to yesterday Global Encryption Day.

It turned out similar to Baroque putto :blobcatjoy:

In some conversation in comments (it was HackerNews? Or some random tech blog?) I once read very inspiring thing. Well implemented #encryption is so strong protection, that in physical world equally invincible door/lock doesn't exist. Since then I often think about it. It's so encouraging feeling, like I have powerful guardian #angel protecting me with invincible shield. And I feel really honored by this angel's generosity and grace.

Cartoon style drawing of a person on dark night sky background. The person is wearing jeans and dark purple hoodie and has short black hair. They are enclosed in bubble made of light and try to touch its inner surface. Outside the bubble there are child deity, slightly similar to baroque putto, mostly naked, wrapped in white cloth, with golden hair, black blindfold and golden key on necklace. This child touches bubble from outside. On the top of picture there is text: "Thank you for protecting me".

Aleksotas Hill Observation Deck, Kaunas, Lithuania (part 2 of 2)

Here, you’ll find a sculpture depicting Perkunas, the Lithuanian god of thunder. This sculpture draws on ancient Baltic traditions and beliefs, recalling the roots of Lithuanian culture and the region’s original myths.

In Old Lithuanian beliefs, Perkunas was one of the most important deities – he personified the forces of nature, particularly storms, thunder, fertility, and rebirth. The contemporary sculpture, placed at the viewing terrace, is a symbol of the combination of history, local myths and modern urban space.

Apotheosis

This is also called divinization or deification. It’s from the Latin deificato, meaning “making divine.” This is the glorification of a subject to divine levels & commonly, the treatment of a human being, any other living thing, or an abstract idea in the likeness of a deity.

The original sense of apotheosis relates to religion & is the subject of many works of art. Figuratively “apotheosis” may be used in almost any context for “the deification, glorification, or exaltation of a principle, practice, etc.” So normally attached to an abstraction of some sort.

In religion, apotheosis was a feature of many religions in the ancient world. Some that are active today. It requires a belief that there’s a possibility of newly created God’s, so a polytheistic belief system.

The Abrahamic religions of Christianity, Islam, & Judaism don’t allow this. Though many recognize minor sacred categories such as saints. They’re created by a process called canonization. In Christian theology, there’s a concept of the faithful becoming god-like, called divinization or in Eastern Christianity theosis.

In Hinduism, there’s some range for new deities. A human may be deified by becoming regarded as an avatar of an established deity, usually a major one, or by being regarded as a new, independent deity (usually a minor one), or a mix of the 2.

In art, an apotheosis scene usually shows the subject in the Heavens or rising towards them. They’re often partnered by a number of angels, putti, personifications of virtues, or similar figures.

Especially from Baroque art onwards apotheosis scenes may show rulers, generals, or artists purely as an honorific symbol. In many cases, the “religious” context is classical Greco-Roman pagan religion, like The Apotheosis of Voltaire, which features Apollo. The Apotheosis of Washington (1865) sits high in the dome of the United States of America Capitol Building is another example. Personification of places or abstractions are also shown receiving an apotheosis. The classic composition was suited for artistic placement on ceilings or inside domes.

Before the Hellenistic period, imperial cults were known in ancient Egypt (pharaohs) & Mesopotamia (from Naran-Sin through Hammurabi). In the New Kingdom of Egypt, all deceased pharaohs were deified as the god Osiris, having been identified as Horus while on the throne. They were sometimes referred to as the “son” of other various deities.

The architect Imhotep was defied after his passing away. Though the process seems to have been gradual. This took over 1,000 years, by which time he had become associated with medicine. About a dozen non-royal ancient Egyptians became regarded as deities.

Ancient Greek & Roman religions have many characters who were born as humans but became gods. Like Disney’s Hercules. They’re usually made divine by 1 of the main deities, the 12 Olympians. In the Roman story of Cupid & Psyche, Zeus gave the ambrosia of the gods to the mortal Psyche. This transformed her into a goddess herself.

In the case of the Hellenistic queen Berenice II of Egypt was deified like other rulers of the Ptolemaic dynasty. The court dispersed a myth that her hair, that was cut off to fulfill a vow, had its own apotheosis before becoming the Coma Berenices, a group of stars that still bear her name.

In the Greek world, the 1st leader who granted himself diving honors was Philip II of Macedon. At the wedding to his 6th wife, Philip’s enthroned image was carried in procession among the Olympian gods. Such Hellenistic state leaders might be raised to a status equal to the gods before death, like Alexander the Great, or afterwards, like members of the Ptolemaic dynasty.

A heroic cult status that’s similar to apotheosis was also an honor given to a few reversed artists of the distant past, such as Homer.

Up to the end of the Roman Republic, the god Quirinus was the only 1 the Romans accepted as having undergone apotheosis, for his identification/syncretism with Romulus. Syncretism is the practice of meshing together different beliefs & various schools of thought. Eventually apotheosis in Ancient Rome was a process whereby a deceased ruler was recognized as divine by their successors. This was usually done by a decree of the Senate & popular consent.

The 1st of these cases was the posthumous deification of the last Roman dictator Julius Caesar in 42 BC by his adopted son, the triumvir Caesar Octavian. In addition to showing respect, the present ruler often deified a popular predecessor to legitimize himself & gain popularity himself & gain popularity with the people.

A vote in the Roman Senate, in the later Empire confirming an imperial decree, was the normal official process. But this sometimes followed a period with the unofficial use of deific language or imagery for the individual. This was often done rather discreetly within the imperial circle.

There was then a public ceremony, called a consecratio, including the release of an eagle which flew high. This represents the ascent of the deified person’s soul to Heaven. Imagery featuring the ascent, sometimes using a chariot, was common on coins & in other art.

The largest & most famous example in art in a relief on the base of the Column of Antoninus Pius, showing the emperor & his wife, Faustina the Elder, being carried up by a much larger winged figure, described as representing “Eternity,” as the personifications of “Roma” & the Campus Martius sit below, & eagles fly above. The imperial couple are represented as Jupiter & Juno (or Zeus & Hera).

The historian Dio Cassius, who said he was present, gives a detailed description of the large, & lavish, public consecratio of Perinax, emperor for 3 months in 193, ordered by Septimius Severus.

At the height of the imperial cult during the Roman Empire, sometimes the emperor’s deceased loved ones (heirs, empresses, or lovers) like Hadrian’s Antinous were deified as well.

Deified people were posthumously given the title ‘Divus’ for men & ‘Diva’ for women to their names to signify their divinity. Traditional Roman religion distinguished between a deus (god) & divus (a mortal who became divine or deified), though not consistently. Temple & columns were erected to provide a space for worship.

The imperial cult was mainly popular in the provinces. Especially in the Eastern Empire, where many cultures were well used to deified rulers, & less popular in Rome itself, & among traditionalists & intellectuals.

Some privately, & cautiously, ridiculed the apotheosis of inept & feeble emperors, as in the satire The Pumkinification of (the Divine) Claudius. This is usually attributed to Seneca.

Numerous mortals have been deified into the Taoist pantheon. Examples are Guan Yi, Iron-crutch Li, & Fan Kuai. Song dynasty general Yue Fei was deified during the Ming dynasty. He’s considered by some practitioners to be 1 of the 3 highest-ranking heavenly generals. The Ming dynasty epic Investiture of the Gods deals heavily with deification legends.

In the complicated, & variable, conceptions of deity in Buddhism, the achievement of Buddhahood may be regarded as an achievable goal for the faithful. Many significant deities are considered to have begun as normal people, from Gautama Buddha (the original Buddha & the creator of Buddhism) downwards. Most of these are seen as avatars or re-births of earlier figures.

Some significant Hindu deities, in particular Rama, were also born as humans. He’s seen as an avatar of Vishnu. In more modern times, Swaminarayan is an undoubted & well-documented historical figure, who’s regarded by some Hindus as an avatar of Vishnu, or as being a still more elevated deity. Bharat Mata (Mother India) began as a national personification devised by a group of Bengali intellectuals in the late 19th century. But now it receives some worship.

Various Hindu & Buddhist rulers in the past have been represented as deities, especially after death, from India to Indonesia. Jayavarman VII, King of the Khmer Empire the 1st Buddhist king of Cambodia, had his own features used for the many statues of Buddha/Avalokitevara he erected.

The extreme personality cult instituted by the founder of North Korea, Kim Il-Sung, has been to represent a deification. And continues to this day with the current leader. Even the nation is admittedly atheist.

In Christian theology, instead of the word “apotheosis,” they use the words “deification” or “divinization” or the Greek word “theosis.” Pre-Reformation, & mainstream theology, in both East & West, views Jesus Christ as the preexisting God who undertook mortal existence. Not as a mortal being who attained divinity. A view known as adoptionism. Adoptionism is an early Christian non-Trinitarian doctrine that holds that Jesus was born a mere human being. But Jesus was later adopted by God as His son, usually at Jesus’ baptism or resurrection, rather than being divine from eternity.

It holds that he has made it possible for human beings to be raised to the level of sharing the divine nature as II Peter 1:4 states that he became human to make humans “partakers of the divine nature.”

In John 10:34, Jesus referenced Psalm 82:6 when he stated: “Is it not written in your Law, I have said you are gods?” Other authors stated: “For this is why the Word became man, & the Son of God became the Son of man: so that Man, by entering into communion with the Word & thus receiving divine sonship, might be made God.” Accusations of self deification to some degree may have been placed on heretical such as the Waldensians.

The language of II Peter is taken up by St. Irenaeus, in his famous phrase, “if the Word has been made man, it is so that men may be made gods.” It becomes the standard in Greek theology. In the 14th century, St. Athanasius repeats Irenaeus almost word for word. In the 5th century, St. Cyril of Alexandria says that we shall become sons “by participation” (Greek methexis). Methexis is “group sharing,” where the audience actively participates in the performance.

Deification is the central idea in the spirituality of St. Maximus the Confessor. For whom the doctrine is the result of the Incarnation: “Deification, briefly, is the encompassion & fulfillment of all times and ages.”

The Roman Catholic Church doesn’t use the term “apotheosis” in its theology. This is equivalent to the Greek word theosis are Latin-derived words “divinization” & deification” used in the Latin tradition of the Catholic Church.

The concept has been given less prominence in Western theology than in that of the Eastern Catholic Churches. But is present in the Latin Church’s liturgical prayer.

Despite the theological differences, in the Catholic church art depictions of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in art & the Ascension of Jesus in Christian art do share many similarities in composition to apotheosis subjects. As there are many images of saints being raised into Heaven.

Anthropolatry is the deification & worship of humans. It was practiced in ancient Japan towards their emperors. Followers of Socinianism were later accused of practicing anthropolatry.

Evoking Deity: Calling Forth the God and Goddess

Working with the energy of deity is one of the primary reasons why we create sacred space. If you’re leaving that out of your ritual, then you’re missing out on a huge potential part of your practice.

Where do you start? How do you plan? Who do you call? Those are topics we’re going to cover today.

Evoking vs. Invoking

For the purposes of this article (and just about anything I ever write or teach), the words “invoke” and “evoke” mean very different things. Here’s the distinction:

  • To evoke means to “call forth.” This happens when you bring the energy of a deity into your sacred space.
  • To invoke means to “call into someone or something.” This happens, for instance, when you invite a deity to temporarily reside in your body.

In other contexts, those words might have completely different meanings. In this article, however, we’re just talking about evocation. Invocation, like “drawing down,” is a different method entirely and perhaps we’ll discuss that on another day. Or perhaps we’ll just leave some things to mystery. Who knows?

Just to reiterate: If I have invited the energy of a deity to be present around me and within my ritual space, then I have just evoked a deity.

Deity Relationships

The process of evoking a deity starts way before the ritual ever begins. The first actions happen days, weeks, or even months prior when you choose who you want to work with, do your due diligence, and start forming a relationship.

That’s right, kids. It’s about relationships. Think of it like astral networking.

I find that a lot of people have a certain type of expectation here… how shall I put it? It’s a Biblical expectation. No joke. People are expecting a “burning bush” moment similar to what Moses had in Exodus. If you’re not familiar with that particular myth, then I’ll summarize: Moses encounters a bush in the dessert that is ablaze, but never consumed by the fire. The voice of God speaks loudly through it, basically saying “I choose you, Moses!”

Some might find that situation awe-inspiring. To me, it sounds like a bad trip, but I do understand and sympathize with that desire to be chosen. In some respects, that would make everything easier, wouldn’t it? You’d suddenly feel like you have a clear and certain sense of purpose. And you’d feel special, too.

Are you waiting for the etheric hand of deity to reach out of the clouds and point at you? Stop waiting. That type of situation might occur for a few people here and there. It does not happen for most.

But don’t worry! There’s tons of different ways to open up the door. No burning bush is required.

  • Learn their myths, stories, poems, or prayers
  • Understand their art, symbols, names, epithets, and patronage
  • Discover how they were venerated throughout history

That’s right, folks. With this simple mnemonic device, L.U.D., you can start the process of connecting to any deity of your choice. And I’m giving that to you all for the low price of free. Hades? Minerva? Lugh? Kali? No problem. They’re all included. Seriously.

In summary: it’s research.

Ask yourself questions. Do they have a particular thing that they like for offerings? Are they part of a family? What was their origin story? What were their temples like? Can we still find depictions of them today? You might be surprised by the answers.

This is why one of the first assignments we give students in our coven is to write a paper on a god or goddess of their choice.

Of course, that inevitably leads to another, potentially infinite question: Who do I pick?

Let me answer that for you. It doesn’t matter. It. Doesn’t. Matter. Just pick someone. Open up a book of mythology and flip to a random page. Draw an oracle card from a deity-themed deck. Or just type “who is patron deity of _______” into Google.

It’s way more important that you start the process. That process is going to give way to other processes. And eventually you’ll find that you’ve expanded your knowledge and spiritual connections. Somewhere along the way, you may feel called to build an altar and tend to it regularly — and that’s great, too, but in most cases it isn’t required.

Just remember one thing: If you try to evoke a deity that you not researched or established an existing relationship with, then you shouldn’t be surprised if nothing happens in your ritual. Do you have a habit of inviting strangers over to your house? Probably not. That’d be weird. The same applies here. If someone doesn’t know you, they probably won’t even answer when you call.

Scripted or Unscripted

Alright, well… hopefully by this point you’ve selected a deity and done your research. Now all you need are some words to say and a time to say them.

Evoking deity is usually done in the middle of ritual. You might think of it as the final step in building the temple. We’ve cleansed the area, consecrated elements, created sacred space, and summoned elementals… now it’s time to bring the honored guest(s)!

Exactly how you do that is completely up to you. Some people like to just speak from the heart, but others may wish to plan ahead and write something down before the ritual starts. I personally shift between both extremes depending on my mood, the deity, and the purpose of the ritual.

Let’s take a look at what others have done:

The Elements of Ritual by Deborah Lipp

Most Gracious Goddess, Mighty Horned One, Beloved Lord and Lady — hearken unto us!

Great Mother of many aspects. Lady of the Moon, Mother of the Earth, Maiden, Mother, and Crone. Glorious bringer of fertility, source of our very lives! Be here among us.

Mighty Horned One of many aspects. Father of the Hunt, Lord of Death and Rebirth, bright and dark, the Two-Faced One. Wondrous bringer of light; He Who fertilizes all! Be here among us.

Lord and Lady, we ask Your acceptance of this sacred rite.

Be Thou our guide and protection as we, your children, worship you in the ways of old. Welcome and Blessed be.

Wicca for Beginners by Thea Sabin

Great Goddess, Mother of All Things, Lady of the Moon, grace my ritual with your presence here tonight.

Great God, Father, Lord of the Sun, Lord of the Forest, Lord of the Hunt, grace my ritual with your presence here tonight.

Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner by Scott Cunningham

Gracious Goddess, you who are the queen of the gods, the lamp of night, the creator of all that is wild and free; mother of woman and man; lover of the horned God and protectress of all the Wicca: descend, I pray, with your lunar ray of power upon my circle here!

Blazing God, you who are the king of the gods, lord of the sun, master of all that is wild and free; father of woman and maп, lover of the moon goddess and protector of all the Wicca: descend, I pray, with your solar ray of power upon my circle here!

Those are some generic scripts. They will work for pretty much any deity you’re choosing to call. If you’re working with a particular god or goddess, however, it’s much better to write something a little more personal.

To start out, you could just follow a formula like this:

“Great/Gracious Lord/Lady (insert name of deity) of the (insert their domain), you who (insert first characteristic of deity) and (insert second characteristic of deity), we humbly ask you to join our sacred space. Lend us your energy and aid in our rites. Blessed be!

It’s kind of like playing Mad Libs. If you’ve done your research, it should be pretty easy to fill in those blanks. Following the formula, a call to Pan might look like this:

“Great Lord Pan of the Green Wood, you who is master of the wild hunt and protector of the flock, we humbly ask you to join our sacred space. Lend us your energy and aid in our rites. Blessed be!”

Let’s follow the same rules, but for Selene:

“Gracious Lady Selene of the moon and night sky, you who wears the silver crescent crown and shines your radiance down upon us, we humbly ask you to join our sacred space. Lend us your energy and aid in our rites. Blessed be!”

And if you want to flex those literary muscles, check out Jason Mankey’s call to Pan from Transformative Witchcraft (which, apparently, he adapted from an Oscar Wilde poem):

O goat-foot God of Arcady!
This modern world is gray and old,
And what remains to us of thee?
No more the shepherd lads in glee
Throw apples at thy wattled fold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Nor through the laurels can one see
Thy soft brown limbs, thy beard of gold,
And what remains to us of thee?
And dull and dead our Thames would be,
For here the winds are chill and cold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady!
Then keep the tomb of pagans past,
Thine olive-woods, thy vine-clad wold,
And what remains to us of thee?
Forgotten song rests silent an’ vast
Sleeps in the reeds our rivers hold,
O goat-foot God of Arcady,
Thy satyrs and their wanton play,
This modern world hath need of thee,
No nymph or Faun indeed have we,
For Faun and nymph are old and gray,
Oh leave the hills of Arcady!
Come to the land of valley and sea
Where Witch and Wizard hold their sway
This modern world hath need of thee!
A people of spell and magick’s key

Where enchantments faire seize the day,
The Country of bear and redwood tree
Loud our voices call for you to stay
This modern world hath need of thee
Then blow some trumpet loud and free
And give thine oaten pipe away
Oh leave the hills of Arcady
This modern world hath need of thee!
Oh leave the hills of Arcady
This modern world hath need of thee!
Oh leave the hills of Arcady
This modern world have need of thee!
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This fierce sea-lion of the sea,
This Golden State lacks some stronger lay,
This modern world hath need of thee!
Then blow some trumpet loud and free,
And give thin oaten pipe away,
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!
Ah, leave the hills of Arcady!
This modern world hath need of thee!

Writing such a piece is certainly not for the faint of heart! This task might not be for everyone, but if you find yourself regularly working with a particular deity, it can be a great way to honor them and further develop your relationship.

Oh, and if you’re looking for more inspiration, the Orphic Hymns provide some excellent models for venerating a deity with words.

In Form

As I mentioned earlier, the deity calls usually happen in the middle section of the ritual. The circle has been cast, the quarters have been called, and now it is time to invite the god and/or goddess. Once they’ve joined us, and with their aid, we perform our magick or coven rites.

In practice, it’s very common for the High Priestess to call the goddess. While saying the words, she holds the wand above her head or stands with arms outstretched. She will end her call with “blessed be,” which the coven will echo. Next, the High Priest will call the god. While saying the words, he holds the wand and athame, arms crossed over his chest. He, too, will end his call with “blessed be,” which the coven again will echo.

Don’t miss out. Here’s what’s coming up…

More Info

I’m not saying you have to do it that way or anything. I’m just saying that’s a model that you’ll find in lots of different rituals and with lots of different covens.

Icing on the Cake

The words for your evocation are just one part of the process. Optionally, you could try to add some of these things as well:

  • Place a picture of statue of the deity on your altar
  • Burn an incense blend that you have crafted specifically for them
  • Leave an offering that you know they like

Depending on your selected deity, there might be some other extras you can throw in, too. Lots of folks associate Brigid with bees, for instance. If you were calling Brigid into your sacred space, you might have honey or tiny little bee figurines on the altar. You could perform a ritual where you light a beeswax candle. You’re only limited by your imagination.

Again, research is key. The more you know, the more you can do.

But…

Research shouldn’t hold you back. Don’t feel like you have to know everything before you start. If you can carry on two minute conversation about your selected deity, then you probably possess enough knowledge to practice evoking them. You’re not expected to know everything, especially at the beginning. As you continue to work with a deity, your knowledge will expand.

Conclusion

The energy of deity is important for a “standard” practice, but it takes a little bit of legwork on your part to form that relationship. The best time to start, of course, is now! Do your research and create the connections. Write down some words and experiment!

Suppose Smith’s invisible hand of God really refers to the ‘might is right’ of oligarchs and plutocrats. Being for Empire, it is Deity which ends their delusions of grandeur. Since Deity is the foundation of the categories, its substance has the greater power. Unlike Empires that always end in wars, corruption and deceit driven by caprice, hubris, greed and self-serving interests Deity does not peddle the greatest lie, that only it is the basis of civilisation! #AdamSmith #WW3 #Empire #God #Deity #DelusionsOfGrandeur #Civilisation #GodDelusions #EcocideEmpire #TheGreatestLie #PlayingGod

Some more AI art experiments. Do you think I could be playing in a fantasy movie? Perhaps as a royalty, religious figure, or even a deity? Whichever it is, surely to be worshiped by my subjects ... ; )

Brilliant video by Kelly-Ann Maddox: „Stop Asking the Gods to Fix It For You“
youtube.com/watch?v=14Ps6mO9id

Kelly-Ann Maddox explains, instead of seeing the deities as interventionists, you could see them as role models, as entities that teach us how to find the archetypes that they represent, within ourselves. They help us to anchor into our own power.

A thought of mine about this: So for instance instead of praying to a protective deity for protection, see them as a role model. How does the deity protect? And how can you protect yourself in the situation where you want to be protected?

If you on the other hand view a deity as an interventionist, but they don’t show up to help you, you might feel abandoned or side-lined, as Kelly-Ann explains. She also says that the deities do not fight our battles, but they may cheer us on and root for us while we fight our battles on our own.

FF themed June Kofi Reward for A Spinx (Blueskye)

Who will be able to defy the Prideful Deity of Transmog?
Your Body... Your figure... Your Shape... Where it will go? How will it end? Such a Meaningless thing... Nothing will be certain anymore! #Wolfaroart #TFEveryday #Lion #Anthro #Magical #Deity #Winged #Transformation #Transfur

An Anthro Lion with multiple wings rises on what could be am Empty creamy void. His body is covered by a soft Cloths that wave in the air as his mane shakes against the Winds, his body resting in a familiar pose as his paws points downard, probably targeting a number of people that defy their magical powers.

An Omnious music will play on the background as their will is made and the Lion god of magic would transform everyone that defy him into different kinds of animals of their desire.

Who will be able to put a stop to this madness?
