Excess runner beans? Don’t worry, use them!

1️⃣ Blanch & Freeze: Slice, blanch for 2 mins, then freeze. Perfect for winter stews & curries.
2️⃣ Make Chutney: A classic way to preserve them. Goes great with cheese!
3️⃣ Pickle them: Create a tangy, spicy pickle to enjoy for months.

The harvest from the garden today. The first green-flesh honeydew (5 lbs. / 2.3 kg) was picked and it tastes good. It's sort of a watermelon textured hollow melon. I can't remember if they were this way last year. Picked another watermelon (10 lbs / 4.5 kg), more cantaloupes, 2 pails of tomatoes, a big handful of beans, 6 crookneck squash, and 2 too big zucchini.

A photo showing the garden harvest for August 12, 2025. There are 6 cantaloupes, 1 honeydew, 1 watermelon, 1 bucket of red Amish paste, 1 bucket of red cherry and orange Flamme, 2 green zucchini, 7 yellow summer squash, and a big handful of green runner beans.

The last two days of garden harvest. I looked at the small melon bed today and found a ripe melon, then another, and another, and more... Picked all the fully red Marconi sweet peppers and all the paste tomatoes I could find that were ripe.

The garden harvest for August 7, 2025. There is a bucket full of Principe Borghese red tomatoes, an almost full pail of San Marzano and Amish Paste tomatoes, 5 large and 2 small Red Marconi sweet peppers, 2 green cucumbers, 4 yellow crookneck squash, 2 light green zucchini, and 13 small melons that are like cantaloupes but softball sized. The garden harvest for August 6, 2025. There is a pail with some orange and red smaller tomatoes some of which are cherry, a bucket with some green runner beans, 2 cucumbers that are green, 4 yellow crookneck squash, and 2 light green zucchini.

Today's harvest from the garden, minus any zucchini because I didn't spend much time looking. Picked the largest eggplants and a ones that were on a dying stalk, 2 cucumbers, 2 yellow crooknecks, and 580 grams / 20 ounces of runner beans.

A large pile of green beans, 2 green cucumbers, 2 yellow squash, and 8 dark purple eggplants most of which are very big.

Beans have slowed down, not many got pollinated when it was hot last week. Same for the squash and zucchini and I haven't been hand pollinating them for a week or so. A couple of orange Flamme tomatoes.

The garden harvest for Sunday July 20, 2025. A small handful of green runner beans, 2 orange tomatoes, 1 yellow squash, 1 green zucchini. Sitting on a dutch clover lawn.

There's lots of blooming and bees going on in the yellow squash, the tomatoes and tomatillo are taller than me, and the cucumber bed has no more beets.

The big leafy 'beets' had a big white root. Not sure what it is, maybe chard?

A photo of crook-neck yellow summer squash blossoms. There are about a dozen or maybe more blossoms that are bright yellow.A photo showing two rows with a mix of tomatoes, tomatillo, basil, and runner beans. The left row is in the ground and the right row is in a raised bed. Some of the far tomatoes on the right, which are Amish paste, are above the trellis and probably 6 feet tall from the bed or 7 feet from the ground. There are some tomatillo that are over 6 ft on the left row. The right row has Scarlet runner beans growing out over the top of the trellis and they have red flowers.A raised bed that just had beets pulled out of it. There are 4 cucumber plants, 2 melon plants, lots of marigolds, some petunies, and other various things growing but the soil of the bed is visible now and needs to be mulched. There are some old hollyhocks on the near end of the bed and it has a trellis from a cattle panel above the bed. There are yellow flowers on the cucumbers, pink hollyhock, pink petunia, and orange marigolds.A photo showing all the foliage and root from some very large beet like plants. The root is white looking but not bulb like. There is a closeup of the root inset in the lower left corner of the photo.

Forgetting runner beans? 😬 Don't! Pick 'em young & tender, around 6-8 inches, before they get stringy. Bigger isn't always better! #GardeningTips #RunnerBeans
