This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

KDE discontinues Plasma LTS releases, reduces feature update to 2 in a year instead of 3, offers extended bug-fix support period:
news.itsfoss.com/kde-plasma-lt
(Well done, KDE! In my experience, the biggest issue with Plasma has always been the amount of annoying bugs and crashes, which kind of negated the experience for me, despite the cool extra features and the extensive customization options. However, this new strategy might pay off in the long term, and make Plasma a more stable experience.)

4MLinux 48.0 released with Linux kernel 6.12, updated packages, Kino (classic IEEE 1394 DV video editor) preinstalled, VVenC encoder:

Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) R14.1.4 released with emoji support, support for Ubuntu 25.04 and Fedora 43, tab support in KPDF document viewer, support for clickable links in calendar events, new wallpapers and color themes etc.:

Tails 6.15 released with updated Linux kernel and Tor Browser, various bug and security fixes:

Linux kernel 6.15 RC4 released with various enhancements, bug fixes:

OpenSUSE Tumbleweed update includes Linux kernel 6.14, post-quantum resistant OpenSSH, updated packages:

Ubuntu 24.04 is now compatible with Qualcomm DragonWing processors:

Your anti-top-posting snobbery just lost you a bringup fail report, #TrinityDesktop developers: trinitydesktop.org/mailinglist

Getting into localisation

I have recently made the decision to explore #localisation as a possible future career. I have begun contributing to the #translation of various #freeSoftware projects (especially #TrinityDesktop), both to help out and to build experience alongside a portfolio.

In the future, I'd love to get into #LocJam once it happens again, and perhaps help translate some #indieGames.

Translation and localisation are really quite fun, moreso than any other career opportunity I have been looking into to date! Watching the progress bar of "untranslated strings" slowy turn green is so satisfying.
If only there were job opportunities nearby already.

@yora @rodneylives All of this #KDE #Plasma nonsense, and the way that #Gnome uses the screen real estate so inefficiently and is opinionated about how out-of-place and Apple-like they want #GTK programs to look, really encouraged me a long time ago to stick with what people usually think of as third choice desktops. #Xfce, #LXQt, #TrinityDesktop.

im having issues with #TrinityDesktop For whatever reason when i try to load TDE it just shows a black screen and nothing else.

Im on Nobara Linux (Fedora) with nvidia drivers

@trbutler Totally unrelated.

*Maybe* you remember the weird days of DOS TSR applications, which you would then use an expensive memory manager to load into high memory -- above 640k -- by fiddling with config.sys and autoexec.bat, a lot of alchemy having to do with load order, etc.

Some of these were pretty cool. For instance, you could have a clipboard that worked across apps!

(My favorite was InfoSelect, a TSR searchable notebook -- my InfoSelect data have followed me via various hacks from machine to machine since 1988 and live now in my not quite as good Basket Note Pad in #trinitydesktop . But I digress.)

Way back then, there were whole suites of utilities that would run TSR. I *think* PCTools was one of them. There were two or three popular ones. All cost about $100, and you couldn't run them together. And one if those suites included a little text-mode Tetris-ish game called "Vogon poetry." No idea why, but it was included. It was named in honor of "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy."

I am trying and failing. And it is driving me crazy, to remember the name of that suite of TSR apps. The search engines are useless -- no money in it. Any idea? I tossed my stacks of Byte and PCResource four or five moves ago, and I don't know any other way of finding it.

@jorge I'm still trying to get the iso to build with . The error I'm getting looks like something to do with not providing a value for --force <force>. Maybe related to perl as a dependency ๐Ÿคท Have you encountered any similar?

Found it... something to with not providing a value for --force <force>. Since the build works without me trying to add , I would assume it's an issue with a dependency. Not sure how to fix that.

Screenshot of a GitHub actions summary. A Build Image error is displayed stating "error: a value is required for '--force <force>' but none was supplied".

I think I figured it out. Now we'll see if I can get to install on this image!

As I was walking to my car after work, I had this crazy idea of setting up with . I'm not sure who it would appeal to or what it would take to do it so, like I said: crazy.

In my line of work i have the nice opportunity to play with various operating systems and try out new things. Now i somehow stumbled upon #Q4OS, one (the only?) #Linux distribution which utilises the #TrinityDesktop. I installed it on an old Core2 Duo system at work and it really flys... and looks good while doing so.

I think i will take a deeper look into this, everything i have seen so far reminds me of the "good old Linux desktop days" before everything got so... serious.

If you combined Windows XP with Mac OS X Tiger, this is what the result might look like.
#screenshotsunday #trinitydesktop #tde #apple #retro
A Linux desktop with the Trinity Desktop Environment. There is only one panel in the bottom whose layout resembles the one from Windows XP (if you exclude the virtual desktop switcher and weather applet) but is styled with brushed metal and aqua buttons. Two windows are open, both styled with brushed metal, like typical Mac OS X Tiger applications. On the left, a window of the Pale Moon browser showing an actual screenshot of Mac OS X Tiger's Finder. On the right, the Trinity Dolphin file manager can be seen doing its own thing UI-wise. The icons are Crystal as a compromise between the cartoonish style of WinXP icons and the realistic style of Apple icons (and also because I was too bored to look for a matching icon theme). The window decorations look like Apple, but the button positions are that of Windows.

A very spontaneous screenshot. Just me writing a FreeBSD ISO to a USB device. Sorry for all the blurred text.

A traditional KDE3 desktop that looks a lot like Vista. It's actually Trinity R14.0.13. A Konsole window can be seen in which the command `sudo cp FreeBSD-13.2-RC6-amd64-disc1.iso /dev/sdb` is running.
