On day 0, blackbirds were either inoculated with USUV Afr3 (n = 3), Eu3 (n = 3), or sterile PBS (n = 2). On 1, 3 and 5 days post inoculation (d.p.i.) blackbirds were sampled (blood, serum, pharynx and cloacal swabs and breast feathers). At the humane endpoint, blackbirds were euthanized, necropsied, and tissue samples were collected for histopathology, tissue titration and RT-qPCR. Un merle mâle dos à l’objectif et la tête tournée vers la gauche, on voit bien le cercle jaune autour de son oeil. Il est posé sur une barrière verte sur un fond flou de végétation vert foncé.
La photo a un effet flou légèrement diffus qui donne une impression de douceur à l’ensemble.

Adult male distinctive: glossy black overall with bright yellow bill and eyering. Female dark brown overall; slightly paler throat and breast often have faint darker spots and streaks. Juvenile in summer brown overall with pale spots on back, spotted breast; first-year male duller black than adult, with duller yellowish bill. Can be found in wooded habitats, parks, gardens, and farmland with hedges; often feeds in fields and on lawns. Rich caroling song often heard in urban and suburban neighborhoods with trees and hedges. A native of Eurasia and North Africa, introduced to southeastern Australia, New Zealand, and a few surrounding islands.

A few years ago I was trying to photograph a wintery cover picture for a newsletter I was working on. It was a gloomy day, and I was running low on inspiration. Filling up the SD card with "meh". But then...

"Heyyyyy! What was that? It scared the other birds. Oh, it's you. Welcome back!" I had seen a northern hawk-owl there the previous year. Yeah, the day was not so bland anymore. The feisty little owl had grabbed a rat to go. I took a few photos and left the owl to dine in peace. The local blue tits and blackbirds were not so considerate though.

My outing was still a failure. The owl photos were not good enough to be the cover picture either :(

"Good morning, mister Blackbird. I'm looking for the king and queen of this forest. I trust that the calls of your friends will lead me to them." They did, but the queen was nowhere to be seen – the king was present. After all these years with the goshawks of Helsinki, my heart still skips a beat when I spot one.

I left the forest to see if there was anything else interesting to photograph. The weather was... Well, you see the photos. At least I saw a bit of sunlight for a brief moment. There is little snow left: January was warmer than usual, and February is off to a poor start. But hey, snowberries still look pretty. Speaking of white... While I was walking home, I spotted something moving in the brook next to me: a white-throated dipper at long last.
