A pentagon within a pentagon: a close-up of a pentagonal column within the central cylinder. The rest of the cylinder is filled with pine cones, which are held in with green netting. Four staples are visible, holding the netting in place and the netting glistens with the oil that was used to treat the wood.

The rear of the bug hotel shows two mounting brackets on either side of the picture, although the intent is that it would be mounted vertically. The wood is darkened from the sunflower oil treatment. The backing plate has been rounded off and the revealed wood is much lighter. The walls of the hotel show some additional staining, probably from industrial oils.

The bug hotel sits on a wooden surface and a white plastic bag. The nearest pentagonal section has an angled partition across it, one side is filled with trimmed lengths of bamboo, the other with twigs and the cross-section of a larger bough.

The bug hotel stands vertically on a carpentry workbench. The photo was taken before the brackets were attached and the wood treated so the wood appears pale. There are numerous holes and crevices for insects to shelter in.

Three conjoined, 3D, pentagonal cylinders sit on a thin, unattached backing plate. The pentagon to the top-left contains a chevron-shaped shelf that mirrors the uppermost point. The right hand cylinder contains a flat shelf/divider.

The pentagons have been planed and sanded to clean the exterior and remove splinters. The heads of the nails holding the shelves are visible. The front/upper rims of the cylinders and shelves have been shaped with a chisel to form a purposely uneven bevel.

From this angle the deliberately uneven bevel and mitre joints are more obvious. The dark original colour of the wood is visible on the walls' interior. Despite the sanding, the wood shows signs of staining, ingrained dirt and old screw holes.

Crème de Cognac blooming. Bees 🐝 are still pollinating sunflowers and getting cozy in the bug hotel.

Though for the latter it looks to be suffering from mold because of the wet weather. I’ll have to replace this unit if it survives the winter.
