Here is what I know: downloading a Linux installation image files are safer because every piece of torrent files are checksummed. There is a privacy concern because torrenting files expose IP address, but you can use a VPN to mask your IP address.

I am helping torrenting three distinctive Linux distribution installation image files. Debian, Elementary OS, and MX Linux. I wish I can help torrenting AntiX installation image files, but they have too many torrent files and I know the limitation of my internet connectivity.

When I install Elementary OS, I have a thought of using "sudo apt install synaptic" so I can download and install packages through Synaptic Package Manager (like I used to love doing on my previous distro). However, after using eOS for a while and still not doing that, I start to think of "just because I can, doesn't mean I should" and I don't do that. Elementary OS already feels like it is designed this way. Packages only acceptable through AppCenter and Flathub (at least if being done through the official distro package manager that is called as "AppCenter").

I wonder about how the "Background Apps" being identified. I wonder if this is somehow related to the acceptable apps (from AppCenter and Flathub repositories). Do apps being shown on the "Background Apps" are already identified apps from these two "official" means? Also, as a matter of habit, I still reguarly do "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade" and "flatpak update" on the terminal. I do that reguarly to keep my system updated and I rarely use the package manager "AppCenter" to check for updates. Therefore, as a thought of experimentation, I wonder if it is possible to use "sudo apt synaptic", and use Synaptic exclusively to install and manage packages. Will doing this have any effect on the stability of Pantheon desktop or the Elementary OS? Will it still functional if I use Synpatic exclusively and not using the AppCenter? This is just a thought, but I'm not doing this right now.

The thing that I love about Elementary OS and Patheon desktop is the ability of the system that "knows" what sort of front-end GUI apps that is running in the background... I keep wondering how Elementary identifies these apps. Is it the ability of the distro (Elementary OS) or the desktop (Pantheon DE)?

Got myself an old HP 240 G3 with 4 Gb of RAM and a 500 Gb hard disk.

Weekend project: restoring it and making it run as fast as possible, by replacing the battery, adding RAM sticks and switching the current spinning drive by a solid state one, if I can find any.

It works fine with , but I'm not sure it can stand the workload I'm planning for it.

Per this list (noai.starlightnet.work/list.ht), Chimera Linux and ElementaryOS don't allow LLMs to slop up things.

This doesn't address the problem of the kernel and systemd doing it, of course.

Elementary OS shows my connected headphone battery percentage alongside my laptop battery. This is very useful as I can use it to check my headphone battery percentage.

Below them, there are options to increase or decrease display brightness and power options of "Power Saver", "Balanced", "Performance", and "Power Settings".

I'm on elementary OS. I see there is a "color deficiency assistance" filter in display setting. I was surprised by it because today is my second day using eOS, and I never heard of a Linux distro being very user-friendly and as humane as having this option.

Thinking more about this, and maybe going to even jump ship from macOS for my personal computing needs. Now I need to figure out what to jump to.

#FreeBSD ?
#Ubuntu ?
#ElementaryOS ?

Any other suggestions? I am looking for something highly compatibility, well-maintained, and pleasant to use.

Kurzer Zwischenstand:
VPS gemietet.
SSH Key generiert

#elementaryos 8.1.1 launched Feb. 27 with the Linux 6.17 kernel, bringing updated Intel and AMD graphics drivers and broader ARM device support. It’s available now and definitely a cool distro. I don’t use it myself but always appreciate quality additions to the #LinuxOS community. Power to the Penguin!

Thinking of moving to @elementary OS as my daily driver. Mint is great, but I want something that feels a bit more modern for my daily browsing and hobby dev projects.
Any former Mint users made the jump? Regrets or recommendations? 💻🐧

Since I wiped my main workstation/gaming PC the other day in a bout of frustration with, well, everything, I’ve been having fun OS-hopping. I have a fallback workstation that I can use for work purposes and to get me by while I’m noodling around in my main rig. My initial intention was to run OpenBSD for a few weeks to see the state of things on the desktop (I have a few devices running OpenBSD but all headless) but I ran into a weird USB storage bug. Just to see if it’s a hardware thing or an OS thing, I tried FreeBSD 15 and it was even worse.

So, #Debian has a bit of a reputation on flimsy hardware support. You couldn't even install D12 on a Z8xxx series CPU without fiddling with it unless you wanted to end up with an unbootable system.

I happen to have next to me another "special" system, a Chromebox with an 8th-gen Intel CPU. Which have a notoriously heinous sound subsystem (there's a paid driver for Windows).

I've dropped #CachyOS, #Ubuntu, #Fedora, #ElementaryOS, #ZorinOS, #MXLinux, #Bazzite, #AlpineLinux, #SolusLinux, #VanillaOS, and a few more on this system.

NONE of them was able to correctly configure audio on this machine. Some would not even detect an audio sink, others would have an "Analog Audio" sink, but no HDMI. Others would have a "Dummy Output". Fedora even listed my network-connected AV Receiver as an audio sink (!), but not HDMI.

And then there's Debian 13... Which correctly outputs over HDMI **OUT OF THE BOX**...

#Linux

Anyone have #NextCloud Desktop working under #ElementaryOS 8.1? I have it installed from Flatpak, and it starts but immediately closes. Works fine in Linux Mint and was working OK in Elementary OS 7.1 (different machine from earlier post).
