@00Aaron MS is criminally incompetent if you think their goal is making a functional operating system. If you think their goal is making a just-barely-working operating system that they can inflict on the world due to their near-monopoly market position and then milk every cent out of it by serving ads and extracting as much user data as they can, they are geniuses.

My employer-provided laptop (a very nice 2024-or-so Thinkpad X14 running Windows 11) takes about 5 minutes from a cold boot to ready to work. My ancient personal laptop (an early 2014 MacBook Air running elementary os) takes about 45 seconds.

Note that I’m basing the suggestion entirely from spectating Linux On The Desktop. Never done it myself, as I’m not very masochistic, but #ElementaryOS looks like it really WANTS to be good.

#elementaryos (Versuch 2): Touchpad funktioniert, Macbook aufwecken wie bei den anderen Distributionen nur per Tastendruck und absurd langem Warten. Der sehr übersichtliche Installer stellt teils Buttons außerhalb meines 11"-Displays dar. Nach Anlegen des Users kann man sich anmelden und muss manuell rebooten. Einzige Distribution, die sich nicht mit meinen Wifi verbinden kann. Oberfläche wie bei Zorin (Gnome), eigene Apps wirken im Vergleich "zu klein".

In more positive news, #zenbrowser is one of my favorite #foss projects.

It takes a bit of time to get used to it, but I really like the pinned and essentials tab system, vertical scrolling, popping-open links, and workspaces with containerization.

I like opinionated projects like this and #elementaryos that have a unique vision of how we use computers and execute on it well.

The refurbed Dell XPS laptop has been de-windowed and I’ve installed @elementary on it. It now matches the Dell Optiplex that also runs #elementaryOS in my house. #linux

For a simple machine that just works #debian .

For new users that will look for help online #LMDE Linux Mint Debian Edition.

All of these will work equally well as python development machines.

I manage thousands of RedHat machines at work and am not a fan of the RedHat/Fedora way of doing things, even less since the IBM takeover of RedHat. #enshittification is already happening there #ubuntu same.

I just tried both for my elderly neighbour’s old laptop and some others (thank you #ventoy !!) and i much prefer mint (in #debian flavour).

For a usability focused distro, my goto is #elementaryOS which has some similarities with MacOS and is well worth a look.

I have all three on my ventoy usb stick, so trying them all is a matter of picking each on reboot - took all of 20 minutes to give each a spin.

I currently have #Asahi installed but I'm looking to install #elementaryOS on my M1 MacBook Pro. Has anyone tried this yet with the new ARM builds that are now available?

Giving #elementaryOS 8.1 a try (in a VM). I like the quality work going into this distro. Visually appealing/polished and easy to use!

Скитания по линупсам закончились. Посмотрел #Manjaro на #Cinnamon, #ArchCraft, #Bazzite на #KDE, #ElementaryOS, #LinuxMint Остался на последнем. Сил на #Дебиан на #Корице уже не хватило.

Upgrading to elementaryOS 8 today was a pain.

My flash drives died on me.

The basic install wouldn’t work. I had to play around with gparted.

Post-install my account was disabled after creation.

But I’ve finally done it. Desktop is up and running again. #Linux #elementaryOS
