I have officially deleted my Amazon account and cut ties with their ecosystem entirely. For a long time, the convenience of Prime felt like a necessary evil, especially since they have a warehouse in my city and can do same day shipping. But I can no longer reconcile the big tech giant's behavior with the values I promote at Terminal Tilt. As a privacy advocate and FOSS supporter, continuing to feed the machine feels increasingly hypocritical.

Ethically, their treatment of labor is indefensible. Between the terrible warehouse conditions and the dark patterns designed to make canceling subscriptions nearly impossible, it is clear they view both employees and customers as numbers to be exploited, with contempt. Their anti-competitive practices have done irreparable harm to small businesses and independent creators who are forced to play in a rigged sandbox.

As an FSF and EFF member, I believe privacy is a fundamental right. Amazon's business model relies on massive data harvesting and a huge surveillance network that I simply do not want to be a part of. Deleting my account is my way of reclaiming my digital sovereignty and refusing to let my personal data be a product in their inventory.

The change also affects how I handle Terminal Tilt going forward. I am officially ending the use of Amazon affiliate links for the channel. While the links are a standard revenue stream for most creators, I refuse to track my audience into the Amazon ecosystem just for a small commission. I would rather the channel grow slower and more honestly than profit from a company that actively works against user freedom. Convenience is the enemy of sovereignty.

When I review products now, whether it is the security keys from @nitrokey , @yubico , and Token2 or open source hardware, I will provide links to direct manufacturers or ethical, privacy-respecting retailers instead. Convenience should never be the primary metric for our choices.

We have been trained to prioritize "seamless" experiences over ethical ones. But every convenience has a hidden cost, whether it is labor rights, environmental impact, or the erosion of privacy.

Efficiency is a metric for machines, not for a meaningful life. When we stop choosing products solely for their convenience, we reclaim our agency. We choose local over global, human over algorithm, and sustainable over instant.

Apparently MUD Jeans these days (since 2016) has nothing to do with the old company. All the #jeans are made from post-consumer #recycled material or organically farmed cotton. It's not a worker-owned cooperative, but at least it's a B Corporation. They claim to be trying but seems like it's still pretty bad working conditions for production.

Anyway, that's the best I could do without wearing myself out on research. Buying jeans is always stressful af.

A new video from Our Changing Climate about Ethical Consumerism has just been aired, which I think arrives at the right conclusion, regarding ethical brands.

We should always make the best ethical choices when it comes to what we buy, but let’s not be under any illusion that we are making any significant impact on issues like climate change, biodiversity loss, plastic pollution, exploitation etc through our brand choices alone. If we care about these issues then other action is needed.

If you want to understand why people choose products that are bad for them, die the environment and are expensive as well, maybe just look at the dish washer tablets.
They take control away from you. They force you to use the same, manufacturer-selected amount of detergent every time, even if your dish washer is half empty and the dishes are almost clean. They also contain a prescribed amount of descaling agent, no matter the composition of the local drinking water.
They are also individually packed into little plastic sachets which tend to be a pain to open, or - if labelled “water-soluble” - they clog up your dishwasher because in effect, they’re not water soluble.
And they are significantly more expensive both per gram or per machine load than normal powder plus descaling agent powder.

From a consumer’s standpoint, there is not a single reason for dish washer tablets.

Yet, everyone buys them and it’s become increasingly hard to get the objectively better and cheaper alternative: powder.

And, of course you know why everyone buys them: They’re advertised as superior and producers make it very hard to get other types of products because they optimise their portfolio not based on what it best for consumers or the environment, but based on what’s best for their baseline.

Take this simple example and apply it to everyday life: computers, social media, cars, ffs even bicycles.

Self-determined #consumerism, heck #EthicalConsumerism does not exist.
