A Different Perspective

After picking up my photo buddy Kevin, we made our way to Spoorpark and climbed the observation tower to see Tilburg from above. From up there, even the gentle sway of the structure becomes quite noticeable — especially when you’re looking through a 400mm lens. At that focal length, every millimeter of motion is magnified into a dance across the frame.

Shot with the Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm, this image captures the morning light just before noon. The sun, still low in the late autumn sky, painted the landscape with long, stretched shadows — the kind that reveal depth, rhythm, and texture you can’t see from the ground.

Photography, after all, is just another way of studying light and life.

There’s an enduring stereotype that women tend to be worse than men when it comes to spatial reasoning. Mentally rotating an object, coming up with strategies to maneuver a big piece of furniture through small corridors, giving directions through a city, navigating through a maze, even reading a map ― basically anything that requires visualizing and manipulating 3D objects is thought, by some, not to be women’s strong suit. But there remain many holes in this popular narrative. Are women born different or brought up differently? Would it be possible to close the gap with training? Does the gap even really exist, or does it depend on the particular tests used to measure spatial cognition? Could it be that men and women tend to make use of different mental processes when solving spatial problems? Different ways of coming up with solutions for everyday spatial problems could explain why men seem to preform better in certain environments because for centuries much of the layout and mapping of the world surrounding us was - and to this day often still is - predominantly determinded by other men.

I was initially attracted to the symmetries between the steps, the huge windows and the shadows. The photo still needed the right character to appear and so I was very happy when the old man with the hat and overcoat appeared. Luckily the crowds parted at just the right moment (the museum was ridiculously busy) and I was able to capture him slowly and quite poignantly descending the stairs.
