#Nachhaltigkeit: Ein HP probook #430G2 von 2014 funkt auch mit #ac8265 (habe wegen OS-Abhängigkeit da keine Wifi6-Hardware eingebaut). Zweiter WLAN-Hardwaretausch für diese Maschine. Auf eine weiterhin nützliche Existenz!

@cesarpose @mrmasterkeyboard depends on the model and #hp has something more sinister:
- In many #ProBook|s they literally do a "soft" #VendorLock re #RAM, so if the stick's ain't hp-branded (as per SPD-EEPROM) the #UEFI will brick #UnattendedBoot, #UnattendedReboot & #PXEboot by popping up an error message every boot that needs to be dismissed by hitting F1 on the internal keyboard (!!!) and can't be dismissed permanently.
I literally had this with a client in the past and it's the reason a #refurbisher I know didn't offer RAM-#Upgrades for HP machines at all…
@posiputt ja, bei den meisten Consumer-Geräten reicht es die CMOS-Batterie (!!!) rauszunehmen, ne Minute zu warten, dann nur mit Netzstrom neustarten und dann neue CMOS-Batterie rein!
- Business-Geräte wie #ThinkPad, #ProBook, #Latitude, etc. dagegen speichern das in nem verdchlüsselten Flash.
Wenn das nicht hilft ggf. nen BIOS-Update auf CD/USB/FDD anbieten oder nach nem "CLR CMOS" pin-set aufm mainboard suchen....

I can recommend the "upcycling" & "reuse" route given #ThinClients offer decent performance for a mini server and more often than not are completely fanless, making them excellent at home.
- I do use an #hp t620 for that myself, and unlike the #ProBook|s it seems hp didn't do #DRM with the #RAM on their #ThinClient|s...
It's not that I don't say any other brand is bad, but those brands have been reliable to me and are known to use reliable & new components and not new-old-stock or "upcycled" chips ripped from older machines and sticks.
- And since you ain't looking for some "vintage" SD-RAM there's no need to dive into those.

Würde mein Thinkpad x240 (i5 4. Gen) in Rente schicken (zerfleddert langsam) und gegen ein ProBook mit i5 8. Gen tauschen wollen. Auch nicht das neueste, aber deutlich moderner.

- Cuz it's not as if they can't make a call at #Sprintek and maybe even get a custom-coloured rubber cap just to avoid #Lenovo claiming they violate the #UltraNav design / trademark.

Today is a big day! We managed to fix the hp probook x360 11 g5 ee. It was a pain in the *** to do it though. We had to find the bios chip buy a eep rom programmer spi flash programmer (the weird usb device) to dump erase and rewrite the bios . To use some soldering to connect some strings as well. At the end we had to use rcunlocker as explained on this website https://www.badcaps.net/forum/troubleshooting-hardware-devices-and-electronics-theory/troubleshooting-laptops-tablets-and-mobile-devices/bios-requests-only/87349-rcunlocker as well as IMGProg . #IMGProg #probook x360 11 g5 ee #rcunlocker . We now can remove the old windows put decent linux. This computer got "saved" but how many computer got just thrown away like this one because of those silly password and awful procedures to get factory reset?
@frameworkcomputer Q: Aside from asymetric / non-exponential modules, have you tested 64GB & 128GB sticks?

Any #IT support in #Uppsala? found a laptop #hp #probook x360 11 g5 ee in the sopstuga. Hardware works, windows starts very slowly to the session of some young woman who lives nearby... We want to boot it on a linux usb but it refuses to do so. I try to access the #bios but it is password protected even removing all batteries does not reset password. What would you do about it? I wonder as well if i could /should contact my neighbour who throwed it to ask, but i am scared to freak her out. It seems to be a laptop that used to be from a her school in #uppsala but I have no idea which one the only clue is a message to connect to " SKOLNET " #skolnet #nvram

The only reason I still have my DeskJet 6122 hooked up is because that lil shit refuses to die!
Like its glycol ink refuses to clog and it's easy to refill and reset the cartridges...

Worse are their #ProBook line of #Laptops: They literally "Soft-#VendorLock" their #RAM to #HP-branded sticks, bricking #PXE-boot and requiring people to manually press F1 on the device keyboard EVERY SINGLE BOOTUP / REBOOT with #FUD messages.
- Unlike with like #WiFi and #WWAN chips where one can figleaf argue that those need allow-listing for "spectrum regulatory compliance", this doesn't apply to RAM!
On the flipside I use a bunch of #fanless hp #ThinClient|s as #MiniServers, but that's because in #Germany #electricity is absurdly expensive and for just doing #backups and #MediaSharing doesn't draw much power...

I'm still getting great service from my HP ProBook (S-series) 4530s, that I bought in October 2011 (I've still got the email and invoice from when I ordered it!). It had 4GB RAM and a 250GB HDD, I've since doubled the RAM and replaced the HDD with an SSD. It's currently rocking Manjaro Cinnamon, which seems to suit it better than Linux Mint did - don't ask me why! Even after all these years, it still looks as good as it did when new - I never mistreat my hardware!

Chances are they have a ton of cheap #Lazer multifunction units for less than a full pack of #Ink needed to scan (!!!) with those shitty #Inkjet machines.

Also don't just ditch #hp for printers, but also #PCs and #Laptops, because their #ProBook series of machines do #VendorLocking of #RAM and will refuse to boot without manually confirming by pressing F1 on the devices' keyboard every single bootup (!!!), bricking #PXE-Boot & #WakeOnLAN / #WoL in the process just to #FUD #customers and #IntependentRepair service providers!
The problem is in #IT that #WhatWeAllowIsWhatWillContinue and we allowed Corporations like #Apple to sprearhead the #Enshittification with #GluedInBatteries, #SolderedDownRAM, #SolderedDownSSDs and #AntiRepairDesign!
The only winning move is to refuse to buy such shit!!
Get a @frameworkcomputer and a @fairphone / #Fairphone if #BuyUsed & #UseLonger isn't an option, because in #capitalism, your reciept is your vote - EVERY SINGLE TIME!
