@bert_hubert Wat ik fascinerend vind is dat het nu alleen maar gaat over Amerikaanse providers versus Europese aanbieders. Vrije #opensource-software wordt in het hele artikel niet genoemd. Ik heb moeite met het in machtsblokken / unies denken. Wat mij betreft zou de focus op #FOSS en #selfhosting moeten liggen. Dan heb je pas #DigtaleSoevereiniteit en #DigitaleAutonomie. Veel #gemeenten hebben nu bijvoorbeeld ook een #vendorlock bij het Nederlandse #Centric. Dat is net zo problematisch.
Geht #Synology den Weg der #Druckerhersteller?
Die Firma beschränkt künftig die Kompatibilität seiner neuen #NAS-Modelle der Plus-Serie auf eigene oder zertifizierte #Festplatten.
Funktionen wie #Deduplizierung und automatische #Firmware-Updates sind nur mit diesen nutzbar. Nutzer*innen müssen mit höheren Kosten rechnen, erhalten laut Synology jedoch mehr Systemstabilität und Support. Geräte vor 2025 sind von der Änderung größtenteils ausgenommen.

Tho I wounder if one could easily reflash the SPD-EEPROM on those cheaper sticks to circumvent #VendorLock|s from like #hp #ProBook|s that will complain and demand to have F1 pressed every bootup when non-HP-branded sticks are installed!

The only reason I still have my DeskJet 6122 hooked up is because that lil shit refuses to die!
Like its glycol ink refuses to clog and it's easy to refill and reset the cartridges...

Worse are their #ProBook line of #Laptops: They literally "Soft-#VendorLock" their #RAM to #HP-branded sticks, bricking #PXE-boot and requiring people to manually press F1 on the device keyboard EVERY SINGLE BOOTUP / REBOOT with #FUD messages.
On the flipside I use a bunch of #fanless hp #ThinClient|s as #MiniServers, but that's because in #Germany #electricity is absurdly expensive and for just doing #backups and #MediaSharing doesn't draw much power...

Ok, it seems to me to be more and more difficult to buy ebooks. Wiley ? You endup needed a dedicated software (vitalsource), Oreilly ? You need a subscription and the oreilly app. Amazon ? Kindle.
And for people without macOS, Windows, or a Kindle, forget it.
Yes, I'm aware of DRM free ebooks, but sometimes you need or want a specific book which is DRM protected.

This sounds like a real piece of shit.
It costs MYR1,600 (335USD) per person to use licensed copies of #Windows and #Office at work. This is more than the cost of a basic office PC itself.
The vast majority of PC users have no real reason to require using Windows or Office; it's just what we've been told to use, and never considered any alternative.

I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!
But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!
