They're proposing to redefine “harm” so that bulldozing habitat won’t count as hurting wildlife. This rule would let corporations destroy endangered species—by destroying the places they need to live.

Well, good morning, tiny one!
#insects #monarchs #butterflies #NativePlants

Monarch caterpillar, which has stripes in yellow, black, and white, is upside down at the edge of a rich green leaf of milkweed. It’s eating the leaf, as you can see by the hole in the side of the leaf. The head of the caterpillar, with two tiny antennae, is peaking through the hole.Same caterpillar and leaf viewed from below, which makes the yellow-black-white stripe pattern easier to admire. The pattern of veins in the leaf are also clearly visible. One more view, from the back of the caterpillar, which shows the two little black antenna-like appendages at the back segments. They make it hard to tell, at first glance, which end of the caterpillar is front and which is back.

Two panel photo based image. Each panel features a lovely red breasted robin standing on a fence. In the first he is looking to the right, and a simple cartoon figure stands on the fence behind him holding a bugle. In the second the robin has turned round to look at the figure, who has hidden the bugle behind their back. The robin is a regular visitor to the garden and puts up with a lot in exchange for food, but maybe not this.

My wife and I have gotten into the habit of asking each other at dinner what was the best thing that happened to each other that day. She now likes this tradition so much she's expanded it into three things, which I contend makes the whole thing more of a mental exercise, but I usually manage. I have found though that it makes me take closer note of the good things that happen during the day, so I'm not left with "uh...." when it's my turn. It also helps punctuate the positive at a time when there's a whole lot of the opposite.

It's autumn, and we've had plenty of wet weather in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ, so that means nature has turned on its funky fungi tap.

I found these yesterday.

This is all happening just in time for this year's #CityNatureChallenge, happening around the world Friday–Monday this weekend. Be sure to upload all the weird fungi you can find onto #iNaturalist

A photo of what looks like a bright red slimy starfish on the ground. This is one of NZ's stinkhorn fungi, probably Puapua-a-Autahi · the Anemone Stinkhorn Fungus (Aseroe rubra).

Here’s a poem for Earth Day. It’s called ‘Birdsong’.

Birdsong

There is a bird who sings to me,
each morning from the old lime tree.
I wonder what he’s trying to say?
Stop fucking up. It’s not too late.

It’s such a happy, joyous sound!
Little bird who chirps so loud
And brightens up my day with song.
Stop standing there. You’ve not got long.

I wish I could translate your words,
my faithful, a cappella bird,
who sits upon the lime tree bough.
And still you wait. You must act now.

All’s quiet in the tree today.
I think perhaps he’s moved away.
There’s silence these days everywhere,
the ghost of birdsong in the air.

Stand Up for NOAA Research — The Time to Act Is Now

April 17, 2025

A Statement of the American Meteorological Society in Partnership with the National Weather Association

The administration’s 2026 budget passback plan, currently under consideration, eliminates NOAA’s Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) Office and its 10 research laboratories and 16 affiliated Cooperative Institutes, and moves the few remaining research efforts to different NOAA departments. If enacted, the passback would close all of NOAA’s weather, climate, and ocean Laboratories and Cooperative Institutes.

The speed at which these decisions are being made translates into little to no opportunity for feedback or consideration of long-term impacts. Without NOAA research, National Weather Service (NWS) weather models and products will stagnate, observational data collection will be reduced, public outreach will decrease, undergraduate and graduate student support will drop, and NOAA funding for universities will plummet. In effect, the scientific backbone and workforce needed to keep weather forecasts, alerts, and warnings accurate and effective will be drastically undercut, with unknown — yet almost certainly disastrous — consequences for public safety and economic health. As key stakeholders, AMS and NWA stand ready to provide our expertise so that the U.S. can maintain its competitiveness in the years ahead.
