Less than a century ago many of #Hongkong 's hills were barren.
Many of the lush and dense forrests that cover them now have been recultivated. One location that has been integral for the city's #conservation efforts is the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden. Founded in 1956, the purpose of the farm shifted from educating local farmers about sustainable and effective agricultural practices to conservation.
Today the site hosts many animal and plant species and offers educational programs. You can either stroll up the hills and marvel at all the plants or take their shuttle bus service.

I love how this particular camera mode makes even the large things look deceptively small. The fork of this trunk is actually about shoulder height for me.

Double #thicktrunktuesday here! First pic is the thickest trunk in my collection, a hazelnut tree (if I remember rightly, could be wrong) that resides in the #edinburgh #botanicgarden and the second is a somewhat lopsided tree of unknown (to me) species that's situated on the bank of the River Forth.

More interesting tree textures! This is the bark of Betula utilis, and if it has a non-Latin name I don't know it (just going by what it had on the plaque!). Surprisingly smooth bark with the exceptions of the little raised lines, and those I don't know if they're natural or caused by some kind of damage.

This week I offer a giant of a tree from the #edinburgh #botanicgarden One tall enough that I couldn't stand far enough back to get it all in one shot. The aftermath of Storm Eowyn. If news sources are correct, this is the oldest, tallest tree that was lost in the storm. Even half gone, it's still a giant. Far from the only loss, though I imagine everything has been cleaned up significantly as it's been some time. The remaining trees that have fallen and still remain are ones I think are going to be left, which is an idea I like. It'll be fascinating to see what they do regardless.

One thing that has always fascinated me about trees is the sheer variety of textures of bark. This particular one was an absolute delight to feel, the texture was full of distinct character, just as it is, to me, visually interesting.

Another old one from the #edinburgh #botanicgarden This one is from the rock garden and was taken on a particularly hot summer's day, if I'm remembering rightly. It was certainly one of the most colourful places in that particular area.
