#EnergyDensity

@glitzersachen @leanlearnlead granted the faster a battery is charged, the less efficient it is and the more straining it is on the battery chemistry.

But aside from that, there's no reason why #BEV #Charging needs to be more complex than these few steps;

1. plug in the vehicle with a CCS2 plug
2. select the amount of kWh / money one.wants to spend. (being able to abort if the energy price is abdurdly high!)
3. pay with card (NFC+PIN).
4. upon payment confirmation, the vehucle gets charged and the charging station shows an estimated completion timer & offers sending a notification via eMail or SMS.
5. Once completed, the charging station will unlock the plug/socket and send said notification out. In the meantime another customer could just pull the unlocked plug and start their charging.

Just like on a (abeit slow) gas pump!

@burger_jaap the fact that there isn't #mandatory #Transparency like with #Gasoline #Prices (which have to be reported to @BMWK and @Kartellamt@social.bund.de) is a problem.

  • Given the #EnergyDensity, this makes having or driving a #BEV even more expensive if one doesn't have a #Wallbox (i.e. being a #tennant with no parking space that is allowed to have that as per fire code)...

@KarlHeinzHasliP @denki Personally, I think that standardized #batteries that get swapped would've been the solution to the charging speed problem.

#BEV|s are a problem and the #EnergyDensity and #Charging problems are hard walls that can only be circumvented (i.e. swapping fluids at a #RedoxFlow-#Battery) or ignored (i.e. #Methanol #FuelCell)...

Solving the #EnergyProblem isn't a technological issue, but a political one (see #DESERTEC)...

@CppGuy One word: #Tetraetyllead

IMHO it'll be inevitable that #Methanol #FuelCell-based #EV|s will be the future simply because:
1.#Lithium is scarce & expensive
2.#refueling will always be faster than #charging
3.#EnergyDensity of Methanol exceeds that of any #battery
4.#FussilFuel #Corporations can simply switchover pumps and flex their #EconomyOfScale and existing #Logistics to flood the market with cheap Methanol even if it has to be made 100% sustainable and without any fossil resources.
5.#EnergyStorage is another problem and #FuelCells can replace both #EmergencyPower systems running if #Diesel as well as the average #gasoline #generator.

Not to mention there needs to be #SystemChangeNotClimateChange and that necessitates way better #PublicTransport, regardless if #Trains, #Trams, #Trolleybuses or #FuelcellBuses (in that order)...

  • Otherwise shit won't change.

OFC what any #BEVs won't fix is the fact that most particle emissions are #tire #brake #dust...

  • And those are inherebtly unavoidable.unless we want to sacrifice #RoadSafety!

🥦 Energy Density of Foods

Energy density matters in nutrition, particularly for muscle gain, because it directly affects how easily an individual can consume enough calories to meet their goals.

@pandora_parrot yes and besides that I think #BatteryElectricVehicles will also die out again because #FuelCells using #Methanol at ambient temperature & pressure solve the "#charging" and "#battery" problems elegantly.

  • Also the huge amounts of expensive #UnfairTrade minerals like #Lithium and #Cobalt as well as poor #FireSafety of #LiIon / #LiCo / #LiPo cells with #LiFePO4 having noticeable lower vapacity and cell voltage makes it less attractive, cuz even if we assume a mere 30% efficiency (on par with naturally aspirated, fully-mechanical gasoline engines) tue #EnergyDensity and #range with #Methanol easily beats even the most expensive and high-tech battery cells, including some hot sodium-sulphur cells that are at ~ 400°C during operation...

Also espechally in the #USA and other places, people usually choose a #car to reach longer distances that have no #PublicTransport, thus #EV's may force them to a healther driving habit and regular stops, but that's seen as really inconvenient because it extends the trip time...

@walnut @reece @simonbp I know #LiFePO4 doesn't use #Cobalt, but at the cost of lower #EnergyDensity.

The core problem is that #Batteries are bad for fast energy transfers (espechally since the car industry refuses to standardize battery swap technology so one can charge them slower = moreefficienty!) and that the Energy density still sucks, their production is extremely energy-intensive and the volumetric energy density is still shit.

@lenzgr also #SodiumBatteries or rather #SaltwaterCells are not only going to beat #Lithium in terms of #pricing but also are way less hazardous and energy intensive to manufacture..

Not to mention they'd really make sense next to rectifiers for #OffshoreWind, #PV / #Solar and other #RenewableEnergy sources where they could buffer away peaks and fluctuations as well as increase total output on average...

@dragonarchitect Exactly this is why #BEV|s with #LithiumIon & #LithiumPolymer batteries are in my eyes a totally bad and unfixable design...

If we don't want combustion engines, we shure as hell should look into #FuelCells, espechally #Methanol (#MRFC) which solve the #capacity / #RangeAnxiety, #refueling / #ChargingAnxiety and #EnergyDensity as well as #Distribution problem elegantly...

After all, Methanol handles just like #gasoline in terms of #safety except it's safer for the user and envoirment than fully-synthetic #E85 #RacingFuel...

Unlike #Hydrogen-#FuelCell it also saves weight and complexity because there isn't some 700bar high-pressure gas system and tanks that are inherently leaky (cuz Hydrogen!)...

Hyundai is working on its own solid-state battery, which promises to improve the range of electric cars. The company has patented a solid-state battery system with a pressurization device in the US. The solid-state batteries have a higher energy density than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and Hyundai's system keeps the pressure c

...Iron is one of the most abundant metals on Earth, and the most produced. It has an #energydensity of about 11.3 kilowatt-hours per liter—better than gasoline. The early #eevblog episodes on battery technology and capacity never really grov old: physics, chemistry and the many performance parameters is as relevant now as it was 12y back. And it’ll continue to be so, don’t ever believe people telling stories about ‘magic batteries that solves everything’ 🦄😂

Anyone looking to design battery powered circuits, should watch these episodes, they’re really the ‘batteries 101’.
I’ve worked with electronics my entire career and these episodes were still an eye opener to me on certain topics 🙂

Highly recommended 🤓
