My flurry of network rework this week has wrapped up pretty well. 😃

It was all in aid of moving a WiFi access point to the other side of a concrete(garage) wall to improve the reception on that side of the house. That move meant orphaning several Ethernet cables that used its hardware ports tho'.

A bit of juggling and it's working nicely - and without buying another switch.

A network is never really finished, but hopefully it's stable for a few months or so.

To answer my own question after researching most of today:

We are just going to use the CAT6 terminations/ends - the custom CAT 7 terminations by the company consortium is overpriced BS (IMHO)

Question: Now that I have the #CAT7 & #CAT6 ran in the house, do I splurge for the CAT 7 termination/ends, keystones, panel, etc. or do I just use the CAT 6 that I have on hand/procured?

I ran both to the drops, now to terminate - wall plates & patch panel. procured shielded CAT 6, started shopping for CAT 7 and the sticker shock for someone who is unemployed.... :skull_mindblown:

Pulled huge lengths of coax cable out of the nooks and crannies of our house today. I have no need for it now or in the future.

Two more cables disappear into a wall to destinations unknown, and another goes to a known place, but is not moving at all so may have to remain.

One convoluted route is attractive for a future cat6 cable so I pulled a string through with that one and tagged it.

I hate mystery wires. Can't imagine where these ones would go.

I hope this is the right place to ask, but there is this TV/Radio antennae plug in our Den - Unfortunately it looks like someone cut the line where it comes out of the house near the old TV antennae mast. Any suggestions on fixing/leveraging this for DTV and/or FM antennae for my component stereo setup that I am planning to put back up? The lower plug on that faceplate is so dam weird..

It appears to be ladderline wiring inside - do I reconnect and use for a FM or Ham radio, or do I use it to pull through some COAX & CAT6 to connect the DTV & FM antennae? 🤔

EDIT: I pulled the faceplate and plug off, and it is ladder line inside. The plug is a Wineguard model T32-U which only had the TV/FM connected the lower UHF plug was disconnected - and neither had the ground connected.

Anyone within the sound of this post want/need an 8 port gigabit switch? I’ve got 2 Netgear and 1 TP-Link.

All are 8 port unmanaged switches.

Cover shipping if not in the #denver area and it/they are yours.

home networking question the second

is there any better option for managed switches and access points than ubiquiti on price point?

currently staring down the barrel of a ~£450 cost to replace the current ASUS garbage and misc unmanaged switches

(USW-Flex-2.5G-PoE for downstream of the router, U7-Lite for ground, USW-Flex-2.5G upstairs access, U7-Lite and PoE+ injector for upper floor)

Phase 2 of my Christmas project has been completed. I have now replaced my ISP router with a more professional model from Ubiquiti. The FRITZ!Box I was using previously is a good piece of extremely well specified kit, but when it comes to the main job of shifting packets around Ubiquiti is a lot quicker, it seems.

I pay for 900Mbps download and 100Mbps upload. The download regularly exceeds 900 (bearing in mind it's only a gigabit LAN connection from the router to the box on the wall). With the FRITZ!Box upload has never exceeded 95Mbps. The new router (which I picked up with about 40% off in a black Friday event) is a bit different...

home networking question

is doing 2.5gbe worth it, or do i just get a bigger 1gbe switch with LAGG?

(i have 2 devices that are >1gbe; a NAS with 10gbe, and my PC with 2.5gbe)

looking at managed/smart-managed switches with VLAN capability

Cat6a oder was anderes? Empfehlenswerte Hersteller, Warnung vor Fehlkäufen?
