Infographic explaining the privacy issues with free email services such as Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo, and recommending switching to Proton Mail, Tuta Mail, or Mailfence.

So I've given @mailfence a very quick test on their Free tier.

That seems to be quite reasonable alternative for e-mail services. In som parts it's what I would expect @mailbox_org being. Except of one thing: Unencrypted incoming e-mails will not be stored encrypted.

Since I'm on the free tier currently, I've not tested the IMAP integration.

The weakness of #Mailfence and #Mailbox are that the PGP setup requires some efforts to happen. The "settings" panel on Mailfence is cleaner and better organized than mailbox.org, but the latter one is capable of ensuring all received e-mails are stored encrypted - regardless if it was encrypted at arrival or not.

PGP key management is still not as easy as it should be for non-tech users. "It should just happen automatically", is my stance here. It's close to being good, but you need to explicitly enable encryption on each mail you send - unless you reply to an already encrypted mail. This will confuse users and it will result in more unencrypted mails sent than intended.

Neither Mailfence nor mailbox.org will decrypt encrypted Subject fields.

I've briefly tested the WebDAV integration, which seems to work. But WebDAV is not end-to-end-encrypted, so uploaded data will not be stored in so-called "zero access" mode. This means the Mailfence people managing their servers can access and read your data. This will be the same for CalDAV/CardDAV too (calendar and contacts synching)

Mailbox.org recently announced they will upgrade their login system - which is long overdue. Their OTP setup is currently just confusing and very far from user friendly. Here Mailfence is very straight forward.

Both Mailfence and #mailbox_org still got quite a long way to provide a properly privacy enabled service. They're on a good path, but currently far from the capabilities of @protonprivacy, even on the most basic features in e-mail.

You have probably seen this #viral #infographic on #eu #digitalsovereignty by #reddit user u/lukakopajtic. It was viral but not very accurate 😅 recommending #bluesky and #firefox as "EU alternatives"? How? Anyway, he just updated the infographic, and it's much, much better! Most issues have been corrected. I think there is still a couple of issues I disagree with: 1) recommending #matrix instead of #jabber #xmpp 2) recommending #lineageos instead of #grapheneos (but OK, I can understand this if the focus is on self-sovereignty only), 3) recommending #droidify instead of #accrescent (but, even here, I can understand if the goal is to replace #playstore ), and 4) recommending #thunderbird as a comparison to #gmail (nothing wrong with Thunderbird, but that's an email client, not a Gmail-like suite provider, I would have rather recommended #mailfence or #mailbox ). Kudos for the initiative though, the intentions are good!

@armin @mwl Mail on #apple is a very difficult thing, I'm in the middle of that myself 😔

On #macos : several options, I find #thunderbird is the best you can get.

On #iOS: to my knowledge there is no #opensource option for a mail #IMAP client. Which is crazy! Only options are tied to a specific (and external, so not for you) provider: #tuta , #protonmail , in my case #mailfence .

I'm afraid that your only option on #iOS is the default #mail app...

#selfhost and #apple clearly don't seem to be good friends...

Normie noob question alert: is there anywhere that offers a comparison of the following email providers?

Mailbox
Mailfence
Posteo
TutaMail

I'm trying to divest from Google's ecosystem, so looking for somewhere to set up for the long-term (preferably based in the EU).

Any and all replies are also welcome. Thanks, folks!

Anyone have recommendations on a replacement? First two that come to mind are \ & but looking to see what's out there.

Even if they "recalled" the posts, it's not a company I want to support anymore.

Looking for some #tech advice. Trying to move from #Gmail to more secure #email accounts. Set up free @protonprivacy account and was planning on doing one more. Planned on using #Mailfence but they won't let me register. I was thinking of going with @startmail or @fastmail as a general secure inbox. Any thoughts or experiences with them? A third option is to do Mail Plus with #Proton and have just one box. Wanted to keep costs lower ($5 or below). Doing this as part @cyberlyra's Cyber Cleanse!

Goodbye #protonmail, hello #mailfence.

The transfer took less than twenty minutes, including the mail export and import.

Free speech is protected, but so is my ability to chose who I do business with.

Just logged in again for a second to block Proton out of spite, after having cancelled my VPN with them (in favor of ) as well as my email account (in favor of ). Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Hang in there, everyone. Keep doing what you can to keep yourselves and those around you safe.

I want to suggest email providers focused on security like Protonmail, Tutanota, Mailfence, etc. to put in place a canari email warning system to propose to their clients.
This is how this would work: you subscribe to their service and every Monday or every 1st of the month you receive an email that tells you something to the effect of "We are happy to announce to you that to this day we have not been subpoenaed to provide any information regarding your account."
That way the day they do receive a subpoena with a gag order of course they can't legally warn you that you are under surveillance, but they just don't send you your weekly / monthly email anymore and now, if you are attentive, you know something is going on.

I think that should be legal pretty much anywhere in the world, right? They can prohibit you from warning someone, but they can't attack you for NOT sending a false declaration in your name. Maybe someone more familiar with laws can chime in on this.

"Canari emails" of course because of the proverbial but also very real canaris in coal mines.

How about #Mailfence ?

Seguiremos informando!!
