The tickseed is finally beginning to bloom after getting fertilizer!! I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm learning #gardening #flowers #NativeFlowers

A tickseed plant plentiful with buds is in the process of opening a single bloom. A zinnia plant in full bloom with purple and orange-red blooms sits just behind

Drizzly July morning here in Iowa and I've been neglecting flower photo opportunities lately but here's a couple from my rounds this AM.

#Bumblebees along with the #Sweatbees were also digging all the flowering #Milkweed! Some of my neighbors must think I'm mad, but my next door neighbor loves it!

Dusted off the camera today. It wasn't too hot, the sun was out, and my #bumblebee friends were digging the #WildHydrangea flowers! I'm glad I gave them more space and light last year -- it paid off this year!

A bumblebee on top of a white, flowering hydrangea -- clusters of small white flowers and stamens, with big green toothy leaves. The background is shaded, which made the flower and bee stand out.

The bees are all over our wild bergamot this summer - often 20 or 30 of them in the clumps at any given time. Our native flower garden has really brought us a lot of happiness.

Really lucky with this new bee fly in the garden - Conophorus sackenii. It isn't a rare insect, but it is not commonly observed - only the 6th one on iNaturalist and the first one in the province! It is feeding on Canada anemone, a native flower.

A mid-size bee fly, about honey bee size, sits on the stamen of a white anemone, an open, daisy like flower. It has a dark, hairy abdomen and mostly transparent wings with a dark brown network of veins.

Kinnickinnick flowers (don't you just love the name?) at Beaver Creek, SK. Also known as bear berries (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi). The fruit are edible but unappealing.

Novice #gardener reveals 'stunning' one-year transformation: 'For a first timer that's excellent'

Story by Simon Sage, February 7, 2025

"A novice gardener showed off their progress over at r/#GardeningUK, and the results were quite inspiring.

"'I took the two sycamores down (still need to get the trunks out) as they took 70% of the sunlight as can be seen in the first picture and are way too large for this sized garden. The remaining apple tree is much healthier already and I will replace the two trunks with an appropriate sized tree once the trunks are down and a new back fence installed. … I can't believe how much #wildlife has come into the garden and there's a constant low hum from the #bees when it's not raining…"

"It might seem a little sad to cut down a big tree, but the added access to sunlight seems to have benefited the rest of the garden. Sometimes it's possible to make up for this monopoly on sunlight with strategic thinning instead of completely removing a tree.

"The original poster had only been working on this yard for a year, and it's their first time gardening. Their point about hearing bees again speaks to one of the major benefits of #rewilding your yard. #Pollinators need a rich, diverse #ecosystem, and upgrading your yard with #NativeFlowers provides just that. Despite their importance to food systems, pollinators are under constant threat. They need whatever help we can provide.

"The elaborate root systems of gardens like this also massively improve soil health, especially when it comes to preventing soil erosion. If you're interested in making a similar upgrade, dig into our guide on rewilding your yard.

"Commenters were blown away by the work the original poster had put in."

This creates a patchwork of #MicroHabitats that can support more mobile #insect life and other small beings, which is particularly crucial in areas where #HabitatFragmentation is severe. This patchwork can create #migration corridors, at least for smaller, very mobile #species, between larger areas of habitat that were previously cut off from each other.

It may not seem like much to have a few pots of #NativeFlowers on your tiny little balcony compared to someone
