The secretive, skulking loves to play ‘hide and seek’ and is usually very good at it! I think sometimes though Snipes get a little overconfident in their ability to remain unseen – then they let their guard down a bit and start moving about in places where they are not so well concealed. I photographed this one at Brandon Marsh, Warwickshire, last month.

Photo of a Snipe (Gallinago gallinago), a small, stocky wading bird with longish legs (obscured and partly under water in htis image) and a long, straight beak (designed for probing soft ground for worms and insect larvae). The general background colour of the head and body is whitish or a tawny / buff colour, with darker stripes, striations and mottling which breaks up the bird’s outline and can make it difficult to see in the reeds and marshes it likes to frequent. This is individual is standing in some shallow water, surrounded by the stems of dead reeds which have been cut to a short height. The bird is facing towards the right of the image.

Calling all birders: is this a snipe? Just seen an hour ago in eastern Pennsylvania.

A narrow stream in winter, brown grass on either side. From the left bank of the stream the head and neck of a bird is leaning out. It is patterned brown and off-white with a strikingly long bill.

Back in September we took a trip to Minsmere. While at the Island Mere hide a Snipe came wandering out of the tall reeds to take a look about.

Two Wilson's Snipes (Gallinago delicata) were foraging in shallow water next to mud at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge in Alfalfa County, Oklahoma, United States on October 22, 2024. There are mussel shells in the mud. The water level is lower than usual as a result of drought. The snipes camouflage themselves very well and are difficult to see.

The snipes had been acting strange for days. Instead of staying in the wet meadows, their usual habitat, they sat in the village square, stoically, like statues. Something about it was unsettling. They were also humming an eerie drone.

This one was a bit closer than the rest.
