While the US did go to the moon 50+ years ago, keep in mind that this was so long ago that most of this planet's current population wasn't born yet... for most of us, it's a bit of history you hear about from your parents or from history documentaries.

So at this point, dismissing Chinese ambitions with "we did that fifty years ago" is more of a "look how far we've fallen" than a "look how far behind us they are". (sim) #ApolloProgram

The model was scaled to the Monogram First Lunar Landing model kit, because I happened to have one of the astronaut figures from that laying around. It would have been VERY small, like mini-van sized probably. I was comparing it to narrow-gauge logging and agricultural railroads here on Earth, where things are scaled down. I designed a locomotive and passenger cars too, on paper, but never built them.

Assembled Monogram plastic model kit (originally from the 1960s, frequently reissued, maybe still today, not sure) with a Apollo lunar module on a diorama base, complete with craters and footprints for the two astronauts. Also included were reproductions of the instrument packages left on the Moon. The retroreflector on the middle-right is still useable today to bounce lasers that astronomer's telescopes can detect, and is used to accurately measure the Moon's distance. I used one of the astronauts to scale my boxcar model.

One of only three Saturn V rockets left in the world, this one is on display in the Saturn V Hall of the Davidson Center for Space Exploration in Huntsville, AL.

And it is massive.

Only recently displaced as the most powerful machine ever built.

And still, I hear the MTV "bump, da dump, da dump da dump, bump, da dump, da dada dada dump, da dump, et cetera" every time I see the Saturn V.

Looking down along the Saturn V at the Apollo/Saturn V center at Kennedy Space Center.

A photograph looking down along the Saturn V on display at Kennedy Space Center, from the top of the rocket. Apollo mission logos hang from the ceiling to its left, with the Apollo 15 logo frontmost in the frame and working backwards. The "Lunar Theater" and a capsule are visible on the right, and multiple people visiting the exhibit walk underneath the rocket.
