Question #BTRFS :

(pardon, je renvoie le sondage en le passant en public)

Finally fed a 2nd drive to the #BTRFS store on the 2nd #GlusterFS node.

Sadly I did not realize that the rebalance op to convert everything to RAID1 will be running in the flippen FOREGROUND by default.

So 🀞 I don't loose the terminal while this is in progress...
(I gather that should be ok, but still, it makes me nervous)

@jdrch.github.io what happened with your setup ? So far I’ve never had any issues with it.

I've decided I'm done with #Btrfs for non-default root installs. #Bcachefs & #mdraid users: tell me about your experience ( #ZFS users: dw, I already use that on #TrueNAS & #openSUSE #Tumbleweed) #homelab

The main difference between #btrfs and other CoW filesystems is a btrfs filesystem on a physical array is absolutely guaranteed to eat itself at some point. No other filesystem can claim that #homelab

I've had way more showstopper problems with #btrfs than I've had with #ReFS, which is saying a lot considering how relatively poor the public facing ReFS/Storage Spaces documentation is

I love BTRFS because I can copy all my NextCloud server files to OpenCloud & lock my NextCloud quota (to prevent modifications / uploads).

And now I have 0 wasted space, data available from both instances (for now, as I have to slowly delete NextCloud).

After this, I'll begin a migration to using Immich, which I don't quite like for being type script, but its more self hosting friendly compared to the nonnegotiable E2EE of Ente.

On a side note I finally seen my max read of my raid array, 700 MBps. Fancy!

Mal wieder ein #btrfs Scrub durchfΓΌhren.

When I was setting up my server again a few days ago, I chose btrfs instead of ZFS, because apparently ZFS + Secure Boot + Debian 13 is pain in the ass πŸ˜’

Anyway, it seems to work great with btrfs so far.

If you use #btrfs on kernels ranging from 6.12 to 6.19 and get the error:

VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown_block(0,0)

Add the 'btrfs' and 'microcode' hooks to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf via chroot and rerun initramfs generation.

If that doesn't help install `intel-ucode.img` and add it to your grub boot parameters in the initrd list.

If that still doesn't help (happens on Intel 3770k and older) disable #zstd initramfs compression, use gzip instead.

You are welcome

With #SSD s only able to hold data for 6 months without refreshing, and #HDD s able to hold data for decades, I wonder if the optimal storage setup is flash as a buffer/cache in front of a spinning-rust drive.

I wish #btrfs could do that…

Have anyone attempted to convert a #BTRFS partition to EXT4, especially if the partition is a #Linux install?
fstransform didn't work.

I was thinking of archiving the BTRFS partition to a path that's outside of it, format the BTRFS partition, create an EXT4 partition, then extract the tar file to the EXT4 partition. I did archive, but it didn't archive every folder, like /bin.

@stefano I have very little experience with #BTRFS but from what I've read it's buggy and has issues. After reading this, it doesn't sound like it's for anything but a home lab and maybe a desktop.

My confidence is not inspired.
